Anderson Cooper test drives a live audience

Anderson-CooperImage Credit: Jason Merritt/Getty ImagesThe Hollywood Reporter has up a report that CNN’s Anderson Cooper is going to try out a live studio audience for two specials that could eventually lead to a new talk show. The news comes on the heels of recent reports that CNN’s prime-time audience has dropped by almost half since last year, with Cooper’s own 10 p.m. show’s ratings falling by 42 percent in the last quarter. Those stats, predictably, led to a flurry of articles and advice from various outlets about what the network should and shouldn’t be doing. I’ll wait to see the specials before I decide if this is a good move for Cooper, but I do appreciate the attempt to better showcase his talents. He has always offered an intriguing mix of celebrity and journalistic grit, and I feel like he’s the type of media figure people want to see succeed even if they’re not watching his show regularly. What do you think: Could a talk show shake things up for him?

    CNN is a corporate whore.

  • Sam

Well, he will have to publicly come out first.

    • Johnification

I had no idea he wasn’t out. It just seems like a generally accepted fact, and it’s not like he’s parading around with girls. Plus, he hangs out with Kathy Griffin on New Years Eve!

        Haha, he’s gay.

What is the obsession with him coming out? Does he really need to come out and say he is gay? It’s not like he is hiding it like it is some kind of state secret. He was photographed at a Oscar party with his boyfriend.

His having to publicly come out is one of the stupidist things I’ve ever heard. What are you perez hilton? Anderson is a great reporter and I’ll watch anything he does.

Why does he need to come out? His personal life is his own business, and has no impact on his job performance.

He’s not a politician who votes against gay rights while secretly being gay. Those people are living lies while directly having a negative impact on other people’s lives, and deserve to be exposed.

But wanting to know about the personal life of anyone else, no matter how famous, is just about gossip.

Maggie is SO right. As is Johnification. Everyone already knows he’s gay, no one cares, and it’s none of our business anyway; it doesn’t make him any less fantastic a journalist. Or any less dreamy. Best of luck to him!

Go Anderson! Gotta love him. Oprah’s leaving and there’s a void. Phil Donahue once ruled daytime, and Anderson’s is a stamp of quality. It will succeed.

I’d love to see Anderson do a show with a live audience. I wonder what it would be like – still on CNN? Daytime or nighttime? I would hope he’d still do some news, but he’s also great when he co-hosts with Kelly Ripa on Live.

Who cares if he’s gay or not? He is super funny and a great journalist!

    KEEP THE FAITH, COOPER!

It’s not Anderson, or any of the CNN personalities. CNN’s big problems were emphasized when they radically changed its website. It is horrible now, and it was (perhaps) the best media website before. CNN needs such a makeover that I do not know if they can succeed. A shame.

I agree about CNN’s website. I used to go there all the time, but it’s no longer user friendly. I also hate that CNN tries to appear “modern” by reading people’s tweets on TV.

I love love love Anderson Cooper! I got to see him report live once in Washington D.C. A live show will be great!!!
