Image Credit: Chris Hatcher/PR PhotosTaylor Kitsch has signed on for the lead in Battleship, an action pic loosely based on the classic board game, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Apparently there’s also a sci-fi angle to the film, pitting the Navy against some kind of alien armada. (Unidentified floating objects, anyone?)
Kitsch’s casting is in line with the recent trend of putting up-and-comers at the center of tentpole pics (Chris Evans in Captain America, Garrett Hedlund in Tron). And why not? The concept is the star anyway, and these guys give you all the hunk of an A-list actor for a fraction of the price.
Do you think Kitsch’s credits on Friday Night Lights and Wolverine qualify him to take the helm on Battleship? Or would you rather have an A-Lister steering the ship? And how does Battleship rank among the list of board games getting the big-screen treatment?

I think he definitely can do it, but I hope the rest of America recognizes it, too.
LOVE HIM mmm riggins!!!!!!! i wouldnt have seen this movie but now ill be the first in line
This isn’t even his first starring role in a potential blockbuster. He is the title character in Disney’s John Carter of Mars. Shouldn’t entertainment reporters include information like that is a story like this?
As someone who loved these books (Edgar Rice Burroughs also wrote/created Tarzan, but John Carter was a truly awesome sci-fi/Martian series), I couldn’t agree more….Taylor Kitsch will be incredible as John Carter of Mars….and the movie should be sweet (directed by Jon Favreau, right?)
Directed by Andrew Stanton, actually, of Pixar fame
I think you were thinking of Cowboys & Aliens (directed by Jon Favreau). Similar concept.
Yeah, a little shocked there was no mention of John Carter from Mars in thie article. I remember first hearing about it from EW and being so excited for Riggins, er Taylor (I’m glad he’s getting these great huge roles, and I hope they make a Gambit movie with him, but he’ll always be Riggins to me!)
YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!
he better be shirtless for the entire movie.
Taylor Kitsch is super talented. Now, whether people will recognize that or not… we’ll see. But Tim Riggins is quite the character.
The guy can act, so I think this is a good move if the script and direction are there.
“Battleship: The Movie” Seriously?!?!? Hollywood really has no ideas left I guess.
How they’re making a movie for Battleship before Mouse Trap boggles my mind…oooo Boggle, now there’s a film I’d go to see! The well, has officially run dry.
I think what makes these crazy concepts more believable is that we get to suspend our disbelief though the experience. This is better suited with a relatively unknown actor, that way you can really enter the world as something completely new. If tom cruise was up there you would be stuck on him acting like a board game piece.
WWRD?
he is a beautiful, beautiful man.
He can totally handle this. He is an incredible actor.
A movie based on a board game? Wonderful. Next will be Candy Land in 3D… Monopoly will be a summer blockbuster. I’m already sick of this concept.
Boardgames that could be potential movies: Candy Land, Operation, Connect 4, Trivial Pursuit, Hi-Ho Cherry-o!, Chutes and Ladders, Monopoly, LIFE, Risk, Simon, Twister, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Scrabble, and let’s not forget the classic Memory!
