Image Credit: Bob Charlotte/PR Photos; Dwight Eschliman/Stone/Getty ImagesVariety reports that the Weinstein Co. has decided to take two of my favorite things — Modern Family‘s Ty Burrell and butter — and combine them into one film: The smartly titled Butter, which follows a butter-carving champ (Burrell) who’s forced to step down, leading his wife (Jennifer Garner) to begin training in hopes of becoming the new champ. All that’s missing is my third favorite thing, whiskers on kittens.
But seriously, how awesome is this casting? First off, I’m pumped to see Burrell making the leap onto the big screen in such a prominent role. And who else is hoping he carves a giant sculpture of depicting all the dances from High School Musical? Maybe it’s because I grew up in Minnesota, where creepy butter sculptures of beauty pageant princesses were as essential to summer as sunscreen and Michael Bay movies. (My fellow Minnesota State Fair junkies know what I’m talking about. Holla for Sweet Martha’s!) But I just can’t believe how much I’m into Butter.
Who’s with me?

Well, I think “Modern Family” is the best show on TV right now, and Burrell is one of the best things in it…it’d be wrong of me not to support him. (The fact that the movie actually sounds interesting is icing.)
With anyone else this movie would sound very lame, but Ty Burrell sounds perfect for this.
LOVE Sweet Martha’s!!!
I don’t really understand the love for MODERN FAMILY. It’s okay. But the Gay Couple and May-December couple are usually far superior to the nuclear family (complete with insecure mom, clueless dad and bratty kids) – that section is usually pretty rote. Still, congratulations to Burrell (and apologies for the backhanded nature).
Hope theatres do a tie-in with popcorn…and corn on the cob.
Love Modern Family, love Ty Burrell, love Jennifer Garner, and love MN State Fair.
Ah, yes. The butter princess. It’s called something like Princess Kay of the Milky Way, right? A mention of the MN state fair always makes me crave cheese curds.
You are correct, the title is Princess Kay of the Milky Way. She is the dairy princess, representing Minnesota dairy farmers.
I has no idea you were from Minnesota. I guess I just assumed the butter carvers at the state fair used other mediums (such as clay) in their non-state fair jobs. I never thought “butter carver” was a year-round occupation.
this reminds me of that golden girls episode, where rose tells her story about being the butter queen.
I always loved visiting the butter sculptures at the fair (usually the Wisconsin State Fair–probably even more into butter than Minnesota) It was one of the few buildings that had air conditioning.
I’m from Iowa, where we also have butter carvings at the state fair–there was a big brouhaha last year over whether to include Michael Jackson or not. We went to the MN State Fair last summer, where we bought 2 tubs of Sweet Martha’s cookies. (It may be blasphemous to say, but they’re better hot off the pan than when they cool down.)
Ty Burrell is firs and foremost a movie star, look up his name on imdb and he’s been a movie star for a while, now he’s doing tv shows so this EW writer needs to get the facts right…
@racso23
I’d say Ty Burrell is one of those underrated fringe actors who’se done an equal amount of theatre work, television (guest roles and years of failed sitcoms and pilots) and small supporting roles in film, so I’m glad he’s acclaimed turn in Modern Family is finally opening doors for him.
