Neil Diamond fills Fenway Park with the sound of 'Sweet Caroline' on baseball's opening day

As a born-and-bred Bronxite, it pained me to watch my Yankees squander an early-game lead over the Red Sox in yesterday’s opening day baseball game. Oh well. We have the whole rest of the season to remedy that.

One moment of consolation arrived when Neil Diamond showed up midway through the game to belt out “Sweet Caroline.” For unclear reasons, fans have made this song a sort of unofficial Red Sox anthem. Whatever; “Sweet Caroline” is a sweet jam. And Diamond is a hilariously hammy performer, making up in fist pumps what he’s lost in vocal range.

What did you think of Diamond’s performance at Fenway last night? Watch it again after the jump.

    Go Yankees.

    That is all.

    • the nation

      Sox won… nice try

      • The Empire

Oh well…we’ll just have to go and cry into our World Series trophy.

      • Jen

yeah I know the Sox won. I didn’t say the Yankees won. Nice Try.

      • bob

Congrats, you now have won as many world series (2 unless CC ate one) in the Sox during this past decade.

Strange to see Brooklyn born Neil Diamond wearing a Red Sox cap.

  • erin

Enjoyed your collapse Yanks!! Go Sox!!

  • Ceballos

I think he sounded just about as good as the Yankees bullpen pitched.

    • Simon Vozick-Levinson

      Ha! Hurts because it’s true.

      • Ceballos

I’ve been a Yanks fan all my life as well Simon – so making that joke hurt me more than it hurt you.

  • Amy

I think it’s hilarious that the Red Sox fans are feeling so pumped up after literally ONE GAME of a 162 game season.

Let’s at least get through April before we get too big for our britches, yeah?

    • Jack

We’re not Amy…after looking at the Yankee fan boards this morning it seems you guys are taking it much worse than you should. You can’t win all 162, even if you think you *deserve* to.

    • Sox Fan

If you don’t live in Boston or NYC you don’t understand. Every time we play each other it is like it is a playoff game. Doesn’t matter when it actually occurs!! So yes, after one game, it was pretty awesome!

  • Lilly

I’m sorry, I can’t hear your complaining over the awesomeness that is the Red Sox win!! Neil Diamond was almost as good as the little boy doing the Herb Brooks speech!

  • AB

It was fantastic! But who decided it was a good idea to have Steven Tyler sing God Bless America???

  • Marla

GO YANKS! Sorry, but we have Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” to get pumped, there’s no competition.

  • bearahag

    LOVE the Red Sox
    LOVE Sweet Caroline
    LOVE Neil Diamond

    • Suzanne

      Triple Play. (I’m with you.)

  • Clueless

Umm why the frack is sweet caroline, the sox’s fight song? It is about a chick nammed Caroline. Are all sox fans suppose to be sweet girls? I am confused

    • CP

Neil said he based the song after watching Caroline Kennedy play as a girl. Kennedy = Massachusetts (although, ironically, she lives in NY now…)

  • Elizabeth

Go anyone else besides the Yankees and Red Sox.

    Salary cap… salary cap… salary cap…

    • MD

Elizabeth I second, third and fourth that!

  • Todd

as a Yankee fan, I thought it was a great game, a great Yankees v. Red Sox game. Would have loved if they pulled CC two batter earlier like I was screaming at the TV for them to do…but anyway

I thought Neil Diamond was a nice surprise for the fans, but he didn’t sound good at the beginning of that song. At all. Once he “Sinatra talked” through the rest, he was fine. but yeah, rocky start.

Sort of like the BoSox last night.

And NY Mets – I am no Red Sox lover, but they have dibs on this song. Stop playing it at your home games.

  • Lola

How could this be a moment of consolation? It broke my heart and I’m never going to listen to Neil Diamond again. The consolation is that at least we got Beckett pulled after 4 and 2/3. Go Yanks!

  • bearahag

in addition Neil Diamond looked to be in better shape than C.C. Sabathia.

  • Jill

Any Yankees/Red Sox game is entertaining no matter who wins. I missed Neil’s performance but did see Steven Tyler; he was better than I thought he would be.

  • Ldub

    PHILLIES!!!

    • Jelana

      YEAH!!!! Go Phils!
