Kip Williams will direct 'Paranormal Activity 2'

Tod “Kip” Williams has signed on to direct this fall’s sequel to Paranormal Activity. Cue Michael from Arrested Development: “Him?” Previously, Brian De Palma and Akiva Goldsman (one of the project’s producers) had been rumored to possibly helm the sequel after Kevin Greutert couldn’t do it. (Lionsgate’s Saw 3D opens the same not-quite-haunted-yet day as the Paranormal sequel: October 22.)

“Kip is the guy we want at the helm, because he knows exactly what we want to deliver to the fans,” writes producer Oren Peli, who directed the original Paranormal. Neato. Who wants to find out what Kip Williams has done besides marry Gretchen Mol?

Williams directed a 1999 coming-of-age drama called The Adventures of Sebastian Cole (“Its messiness is integral to its fluky, downbeat charm,” said EW’s Owen Gleiberman) and 2004’s The Door in the Floor, an adaptation of the John Irving novel A Widow for One Year starring Jeff Bridges, Kim Basinger, and tiny Elle Fanning. I recommend watching that movie’s trailer — sure, the audio’s a little off, but it’s been a few weeks since OMG OSCAR SEASON and your Jeff Bridges withdrawal is getting really, really bad.

I’m intrigued by the offbeat choice — as intrigued as I was by Paranormal Activity, anyway, so, “kind of.” I’m certainly more likely to see the sequel now. Do you plan on seeing Paranormal Activity 2, and does it matter to you who directs it?

Kevin Greutert didn’t “opt” to direct Saw 3D, he was forced to by LionsGate.

    Nice movie.just awesome.

This movie is doomed to fail. The thing that made the first one work was how it’s low-budgetness.

    Pass city, baby!

I was really impressed with the first one, but for the life of me I can’t think of why a sequel needs to be made. The story was pretty well wrapped up.

Probably won’t be a sequel with the same people, but a similar situation. Like Blair Witch, I don’t really see the need for a sequel nor do I expect it to be as good. But hey, you never know. They could do it like “Ghost Hunters” where a place is being investigated and wacky stuff happens, (yeah, kinda like Poltergeist,) as opposed to another family filming themselves being terrified. That might actually be the best way to go.

The first movie was fantastic. A sequel could mean any number of directions. If they do it right, I’d love to see another one. Just for god sakes, keep it low budget and an intimate experience. I love the feeling of being engrossed.

Anyone remember Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows? ya didn’t think so. Hollywood has a knack for taking something fresh and knocking out a sequel, totally unnecessary for the sake of making $.

I liked the first one. I wasn’t scared by it so it was a slight disappointment, but it was a great concept just needed to be tweaked a bit. Probably would have been scarier if it had just been given a wide release initially instead of the whole “demand it” thing because by the time I got to see it I knew how it ended and had seen either on line or in commercials every scary part except for when she gets dragged out of the bed. I guess what I’m saying is I probably won’t see this in the movie theater but will be putting it on NetFlix as soon as I see it there.
