Image Credit: Ron Tom/ABCLast week, FlashForward returned with a cinematic, emotionally and thematically rich, mythologically substantial two-hour spring premiere. It was an impressive installment that inspired hope at least in this viewer that the under-appreciated, ratings-challenged ABC mystery drama could finish the season strong and perhaps earn another year of storytelling. But two discouraging developments have occurred since then. 1. The ratings report came out, and the numbers for last week’s sterling work represented an all-time low for the series. 2. Last night’s episode happened. It was called “Blowback.” And it kinda blew.
The word that comes to mind is exhausted. It was as if the show over-exerted itself with last week’s relaunch and left nothing in the tank to field a compelling follow-up. The drama was forced and melodramatic. Zoe’s (Gabrielle Union) desperate but noble bid to save fiancé Demetri Noh (John Cho) from his doomed fate was marked by trumped-up conflicts with Noh’s FBI colleagues/pals Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes) and Stanford Wedeck (Courtney B. Vance). Aaron (Brian F. O’Byrne) went Rambo-Dark Knight as he declared a one-man war on Jericho, the private military outfit that he believes kidnapped his daughter, Tracy (Genevieve Contese). I thought the bit of business of leaving Tracy’s treacherous pal hanging upside down in the home of Jerich’so head honcho (played by Dexter’s dad, James Remar) was absurd, and I fear Aaron has been damaged as a credible character on this show. (I have to admit, I was distracted by Aaron’s beard; after the opening flashback sequence showing him clean-shaven in prison, I kept looking at the beard in the present-day scenes and wondering if it was real or fake.)
The episode’s “best” storyline involved Agent Benford taking Lloyd Simcoe (Jack Davenport) to his house and asking him walk through his flash forward vision — a vision which included Lloyd in bed with Benford’s wife, Olivia. I dug the creepy subtext, and Lloyd was certainly creeped out by it… which made me wonder why he just didn’t tell Mark to bugger off and then leave. It wasn’t like Lloyd was under any legal obligation to do as Mark asked. Yet I did like how their shared experience seemed to facilitate some kind of truce between these predestined enemies. Benford in particular seemed to soften toward Simcoe and saw that he was a man a lot like himself, driven by a sense of mission to protect and preserve his family. This new graciousness flatters Benford; it’s clear that these new episodes of FlashForward are committed to enhancing the likability and accessibility of its chief protagonist.
“Blowback” was probably the weakest episode FlashForward yet, and certainly not an episode that would inspired a new fan to take up the cause or a lapsed viewer to rejoin. But for the committed, there were a few key developments:
++ Agent Janis Hawk (Christine Woods) convinced her doctors to hook her up with some sperm and get her pregnant. Yay! But first, she and Noh and Simon Campos (Dominic Monaghan) are — finally! — headed to Somalia to check out the pylons that may be linked to the GBO conspiracy. Finally!
++ Noh went to destroy the gun that allegedly will be used to shoot him but found out it was missing. Saw that one coming a mile away.
++ Simcoe told Mark that he had written an equation on Olivia’s mirror using Olivia’s lipstick that he didn’t recognize or understand. Simcoe has suddenly become quite the cagey customer, and while he says he just wants to protect his son, I do wonder if the show is setting Simcoe up to become a villain. I continue to suspect that he knows more than he’s telling. Then again, maybe what Simcoe knows is that his future must come to pass because it leads to a positive benefit for all of mankind. Not that he wants to bust up the Benford marriage. In fact, I wonder when the fateful evening of April 29 finally comes if Mark, Olivia and Simcoe will basically resolve to play out the strange drama of their linked flash forward to facilitate the outcome it will produce.
++ “D. Gibbons’” real name is Dyson Frost (Michael Massee), an allegedly brilliant scientist who made a name for himself with research that Simcoe himself had done but had not yet published. My guess is that Frost has been using time travel for quite some time to swipe science secrets from the future (also see: the Somalia pylons, built from Campos’ research). But I also wonder if there’s a big twist looming about the second global blackout. What if everyone — or just a few people, including Frost — are going to flash backwards, maybe by a matter of decades? That means Present Day Frost could be under the influence of knowledge given to his younger self by his future self. Make sense?
So what did you think, FF fans? Dd you like “Blowback” more or less or about the same? As I write these words, the ratings are coming in — another dip. Are you committed to seeing the season through to the end or are you feeling like you want to throw in the towel? The message boards are yours.

It’s like HEROES without the incredibly promising 1st season. I scan these recaps and wonder how anyone sould sit through it. I jumped off in early november and I’m not looking back.
I’m still on board with this one… not exactly sure why.
I was hooked by the pilot, been slowly loosing interest ever since.
After coming this far, I guess I plan to see the season through but this is not the Lost replacement that I was hoping it would be.
You hear me, ABC?
I still want a new drama to satisfy my sci-fi geekiness when Lost is done.
Totally agree on every point. I think I’ll just have to throw all my support behind V.
Yes! This show is smart and entertaining. I wish more people saw that.
the more I think about it, the more I’m not sure that Lloyd was in bed with Mark’s wife.
What bothers me the most is Benford (Joseph Fiennes). I just can’t buy anything he’s selling. Not a believable actor. Too bad, i really want to like the show.
I’m sure it could be partially the actor but they sure have given him some cheesy lines! Remember when he called Wedeck “CUPCAKE?” REALLY? lol I dunno, I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt through this season and I’ve been entertained so far. The evolution of Simon has been very intriguing. I’m glad they brought Dominic Monoghan on board.
Definitely not a replacement for LOST, but what really can replace it? It was a one of a kind phenomenon. The next phenom will surely be around the corner but it will never be LOST! FlashForward satisfies my Nerd Fix for now. And V isn’t too bad either, hopefully it continues to be good next Tuesday!
I love Dominic M as Simon, and not because he was on Lost, he is the only interesting character on the show besides D. Gibbons.
I don’t feel like he or Olivia (I actually had to look back at your recap to remember the character’s name – not a good sign) do a convincing American accent, and that is definitely distracting.
So agree with you on Joseph Fiennes. He is the one character I can’t stand. He’s not believable. He looks like he’s either crying or smiling. I hate the way he talks and he is always pouting. They chose the wrong actor to play the lead character.
People desperately want to like this show because of Lost ending and they want a new show to obsess over. But the sad truth is this show doesn’t hold a candle to Lost. It’s lame and forced and is going nowhere.
This show is based off a book…I read it when I heard the show was coming out. The book is terrible and the ending is lame. The show seems to be going in a different direction than the book but I still can’t help thinking back to it and it taints the show for me.
Agree wholeheartedly about the book. I had hopes for the show from the pilot, as it seemed to be more fleshed-out and character driven, but now the show seems to want to be a crime-thriller show instead of a thought-provoking sci-fi and I’m gone.
I’ve been thinking that Simcoe might be shadier than portrayed – he’s at least as smart as Campos, but not as much of a loose cannon. He could have planned and thought through a lot more than he’s letting on.
I hope they keep this show going or at least promptly sign John Cho/Sonia Walger/Jack Davenport to a new show. Love them!
I think the most annoying parts of “Blowback” were the flashbacks for Aaron. We already knew almost every bit of information about him, excluding his stay in prison. They just felt like filler.
Does he have a Boston accent? Also Samantha’s boyfriend house, the Jerico guy, wasn’t that the same house from Sneakers? I kept waiting for Aaron to stand outside the guy’s house clicking two Coke bottles singing “Jerico come out and play.”
In real life, the actor who plays Aaron is Irish. Like most of the other actors on this show, his American accent is terrible.
I read a magazine during last night’s snoozy ep. This show would have been better served if it were announced up front that it would be a limited-run series, and we could have avoided the filler.
Personally, I liked the episode (except for the melodramtic parts with Zoe forcing her way into relavancy). The Mark/Lloyd diatribe was pretty interesting and voyeuristically creepy, but the Aaron storyline was the best part for me as I felt that his initial story was boring, but as he became the father willing to do anything to save the daughter who never gave up on him was pretty gripping.
FOr me, I like the direction the show seems to be as I felt that Mark’s character isn’t as heavy in his angst/depression as he used to be in the first part of the season, and the exposition on Simon’s character last week was excellent. I’m in for the haul, and I hope the show gets a chance. I wonder if any show (that usually depends on a male demo) did well last night as another excellent round of March madness games went off…
I had high hopes for this one. I’m bummed it’s not working out. But with all the good shows that are being canceled, I don’t think this is necessarily one that should be saved. I enjoyed The Forgotten much more that last night’s episode, for one. It’s too bad.((shaking head sadly))
What drives me crazy about this show is that the characters do such unrealistic things. Janice repeatedly allowing Campos to escape last week, Zoe charging into her fiance’s FBI office and demanding his boss to give her the secret Mosaic files, the tough guy CIA agent telling Campos (who is a civilian and presumably still in the FBI’s CUSTODY) all about the secret mission to Somalia……none of it is believable. I am willing to accept the far out concept of the show, but the characters have to act reasonably within it. That’s why shows like BSG and Lost work. No matter what crazy things are happening around them, the characters behave in ways you would expect them to under the circumstances.
Well said. It’s not that people on LOST do such believable things either, mind you, but that it feels convincing enough at the time. Huge difference in the quality of dialogue especially.
I still want to know where it goes. The premise is great and it has been filled with some “light” performances along the way, but I am always hoping that it picks up the pace and starts giving us answers… They better throw everything at us soon because it looks like this one season will be the first and last! (Kind of think it would have been better suited to a 5-part mini series or something.)
A little message from Paris, France.
As I heard about the serie in November 2009 I was expecting a lot, like trying to find the rush I had when watching the first Heroes season; But such a disappointment… I keep on watching the show because there is not much around, especially since BSG is out, but the facts that Olivia’s and Lloyd’s non-affair is ridiculous and that MR Mark character is so empty and weak, that leads everytime to such a feeling of “such a waist”…
