Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has confirmed that Penélope Cruz has been added to the cast as the “feisty” daughter of new villain Blackbeard (Deadwood‘s Ian McShane), the nastiest pirate that ever lived. He also tells MTV News (watch) that there’ll be a little romance between Cruz’s character and Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) as he searches for the Fountain of Youth. Geoffrey Rush will return as Barbossa. What do you think?
I like the Depp-Cruz pairing. The Blow costars should have chemistry, and I’m already envisioning a scene in which a drunk Jack has difficulty understanding her English. Plus, lord knows Cruz will look great in a corset. Between her and McShane (pity this will have to be PG-13), I’m no longer mourning the loss of Will (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth (Keira Knightley). You?

There’s going to be a FOURTH one?! o_O
That was my first thought too!
unfortunately…… they should’ve stopped after the first one. second one was terrible, third was….meh. no fourth!! especially if there’s no orlando bloom! I’m not like a huge fan, but I don’t want to see Pirates without him.
Are you kidding me? The second one was even better than the first. Its the third one that made no sense.
Are you happy to hear that? Or not so much?
Definitely NOT happy.
Huh. That’s…interesting.
Those movies are horrible except maybe the first one. Regretted seeing the second one and refused to watch the 3rd one. But I kind of like the sound of this one, go figure.
I’m with you HD. Loved the first one. Not the second, and skipped the 3rd. Don’t need a 4th.
how can you say something is horrible if you never saw it
Yeah. to me this feels like they’re saying “hey we didn’t so well on pirates 2 and 3, so here’s 4 to make up for it. we’re revamping a lot of it and hopefully making it more like the first one.” at least that’s what i’m hoping.
As completely unappealing as the idea of a fourth “Pirates” movie is (they really are getting considerably worse each time out)…
Dropping Bloom and Knightley and adding McShane and Cruz = upgrade.
agreed.
I second that. The 3rd was really awful…it just got drunk on special effects, and abandoned any sort of plot. But the certain aspects of the series are great (Capt. Sparrow, Barbossa, the setting, the focus on pirates) and adding talented actors could make this quite an enjoyable 4th Pirates.
Now I want to see this movie. Good choice!
Why do we need a fourth POTC movie? The second and third ones weren’t even that good. They should have stopped at one.
I think that’s why they feel they need to make a 4th movie… to redeem themselves for a mediocre 2nd one and a god-awful 3rd one.
Well, there’s the redemption thing, but there’s also the part where Disney is guaranteeing themselves a buttload of money by pumping out another “Pirates” movie. There’s that too.
I’m glad that Keira and Orlando aren’t in the new one, their story line sucked after the first movie. And it was always about Johnny.
Yeah, not only did Will and Elizabeth’s story suck after the first one, but they ended it in a really depressing way! Not sorry that they won’t be in this one, because I don’t want to see how else the writers will ruin their lives.
I actually thought Keira and Johnny had killer chemistry (at least, way more than her and Orlando did). But since Jack and Elizabeth can never happen, I’m excited to see Penelope.
They did. Sparrabeth forever. Bloom and Knightley chemsitry sucked but that`s always a problem with Bloom and actress playing his love interests. watching a paint dry is more exciting than watching Bloom`s plank-of-wood emoting and wet noodle screen presence.
Ha ha! Now Tipsy, one day you’ll have to tell us how you really feel about Orlando Bloom . . .
I’ll be looking forward to this… I LOVED the 1st one but was very much let down by the sequels. Hopefully they now realize that BIGGER does not mean BETTER.
@anonymous: This Pirates movie will be much better, this time they have a different director, the cast is much better and it will be based on the Tim Powers book!!! I have even read an interview, in which Depp said that he didn´t like the second and third one. He was only willing to do a fourth one if the script is right, which is the case this time!!
I’ve been wondering how faithfully , if at all
, they’ll stick to the Powers novel. Such a great book! I’m actually looking forward to a POTC movie. Who’d a thunk it?
I think they’re pretty much starting over. Hopefully, it’ll have the quality of writing of the first one. Besides, there was nowhere else for Orlando and Keira to go since they ended up together at the end of the 3rd one.
While I agree that the first one was the best, I must be in the small minority who actually enjoyed all three films (hey, to each their own). Although, I’m glad they’re starting over with a new cast (with the exception of Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush) because Will’s and Elizabeth’s story was wrapped up with the third movie. They’d need to start over anyway, and I agree that it would be hilarious to see a drunk Captain Jack Sparrow trying to understand Penelope Cruz’s English
Hey! You’re not alone. I liked all three as well, and am so looking forward to a fourth!
Me, too! And I’m really psyched to see Ian McShane
LOVE HIM!
You’re not the only one, my brother LOVES the all POTC movies. Owns all of them on DVD.
Count me in the minority, too! I liked and own all three.
I have all 3 too. I admit that the second and third are not as good as the first, but they are fun movies. I’m excited about the fourth. I’m not a huge Cruz fan, but she would be perfect to play opposite Depp. And really, as long as Depp is there…so am I.
i love captain jack sparrow. i think penelope will be a great asset. yup him drunk her english thats IS going to be hilarious!!!
I enjoyed all 3 of the Pirate movies and Johnny Depp is one of my favorite actors but I’m not sure I’ll see the 4th. I can’t ever understand a word Penelope Cruz says. I don’t want to have to pay $10+ to see a movie and not understand a word the lead actress says! That would be too frustrating and headache-inducing. Maybe I’ll wait for the DVD and watch it with the closed-caption on.
She’s not very hard to understand. Do you not have people with Spanish accents anywhere around you ever?
excuse milo, he lives under a very enlish speaking, white rock.
Depp’s Capt. Sparrow is always entertaining… even if the movies themselves never were.
I’m sure this will be more of the same nomatter who the female lead is.
