In Date Night, a comedy in theaters April 9, Tina Fey and Steve Carell play a married couple with kids whose rare romantic evening on the town goes haywire thanks to an epic case of mistaken identity. Instead of sipping fine wine and strolling through Central Park, they flee dirty cops, seek help from a pathologically shirtless weapons expert (played by Mark Wahlberg), and attempt a comically inept routine at a strip club. Naturally, then, one of the first questions we asked the costars was what would happen if their hapless small-screen alter egos, 30 Rock‘s Liz Lemon and The Office‘s Michael Scott, went on a date of their own. Here’s what they said:
Tina Fey: Oh, Liz Lemon would f— it up. Michael Scott would probably be very open, but Liz Lemon would be sour and judgmental and she’d blow it. [Laughs]
Steve Carell: Blow it? With Michael? I don’t think there’s any way she would agree to go out with Michael Scott unless she had been tricked into it. I don’t think you go from Jon Hamm to Michael Scott. Michael Scott should be so lucky.
TF: We should just say, “That’s the series finale this year!”
SC: “We’re planning a little cross-pollination. There’s a tornado, and we all have to huddle somewhere between New York City and Scranton! It makes complete sense!” [Shakes his head.] No way.
TF: It would be so bad. It’s not gonna happen.
Bummer, right? But a fan can dream.

I am officially going to tattoo EW on my arm. Thank you EW, I heart you forever!
Go for the forehead.
Then Jesse James might be interested in you.
Oh wow! This is an original idea for a movie. How much longer are we going to be subjected to The Insufferable One?
Sarah Palin’s in this movie?
Excellent!!!!!
This movie looks AWFUL.
I believe I already saw it in the 80′s when it was called Blind Date?
Steve Carrell used to be good, but his schtik is tired.
Tina Fey on the other hand….just not funny.
Is it meant to be Oscar material? Methinks no.
I love both of them, so I’m in.
Tina Fey is so overexposed.
Thank you!
I don’t know. That photograph looks like it’s perfectly lit to me.
what are you, a park ranger now?
Steve Carrell looks sort of lit to me.
@Nshi: ‘The Big Lebowski’ for the win!
Ha! This made my day, crispy. Thanks!
I’m a big time Office and 30 Rock fan, so seeing these two together was uber cool. Now all this movie needs is a cameo by Amy Poeler (or at least Aziz Ansari) and I can consume my TV comedy in movie form
It looks like a silly little comedy. I don’t know about the big screen, but that’s definitely going on my que.
There is no more annoying character on TV than Michael Scott. It was ok for a few season but got too grating.
That’s enough out of you, Lucky Charms.
Don’t you have an episode of ‘Two and a half men’ you should be watching?
What’s that? Is that a new TV show.
@Shamrock
Don’t be fatuous, Shammy.
Couldn’t agree more. The guy has no range. That show used to be clever but now the humor is obvious and the jokes are tired. Thank god for 30 Rock and Community or I’d just stop watching NBC altogether.
Where does the Tina Fey hate come from? I totally do not understand it.
Where have you been? Haven’t seen you around much since the Twilight hysteria has died down.
Oh, I’ve been around.
AmbientLite has been around. I see her here and there on EW.com.
And I agree with Ambient. The Tina Fey hater brigade makes no sense. Just a bunch of people who can’t understand the humor in 30 Rock and are upset it wins awards, or a bunch of uptight Sarah Palin supporters who can’t handle a few jokes. Tina Fey is awesome, always has been, always will be.
Really? People hate Tina b/c she played Palin for some skits? Soooo do people hate Dana Carvey for making fun of Bush Sr. or Will Ferrell for making fun of Bush Jr–or should I rephrase with: Doing their jobs?
I don’t understand it either, Ambient. I still love 30 Rock and Mean Girls. Plus, it was 30 Rock that first showed us how funny Jon Hamm could be (he’s perfect…sigh…if I wasn’t getting married next week/had any possible way of actually meeting him). I agree that this probably won’t be Oscar material, but I’m sure Tina and Steve Carrell will be hilarious.
Tina Fey is really wonderful, can’t think of a single thing someone wouldn’t like about her, you know? Maybe that’s because I’m so Liz Lemony myself – and narcissistic. heh
Congrats on your upcoming wedding! Misery loves company, welcome to the club.
30 Rock was a great show with it’s first season, but went downhill ever since.
I don’t understand the hate either. Anyway, I think 30 Rock and The Office are hilarious (not as a crossover though,) and I can’t wait for this movie to come out. It looks fun.
LaLa means I love you.
Actually, LaLaLaLaLaLaLaLaLa means I love you
Not really sure where hate for Tina Fey would be coming from. Jealousy? That’s the only thing I can think of.
This movie is going to be so much fun to watch.
overexposed…i never would have saw this cover coming.
Oscar Material? What are people smoking? This looks like a fun movie with actors who know SMART comedy. I’m sorry if you don’t see the humor in 30 Rock or The Office, but they are two great shows that don’t have to do crude humor to get laughs. Just enjoy Date Night for the comedy and don’t compare it to According to Jim or something because it will have more spark then that show.
I’m sorry but Carell is not “smart” comedy. 30 Rock is obviously, but The Office just counts on what it does every week, never anything new, never any clever variations. It’s getting closer and closer to According to Jim week after week.
I’m glad they’re not planning a 30 Rock and The Office crossover. That would be messy and stupid and cheesy!
Anyway, I usually dont watch these “action comedies”, but because I go to the “Church of NBC Comedies”, I must! Go 30 Rock!
After Evan Almighty and Get Smart, let’s just say my expectations are pretty low for this one.
Interesting picture, but yet another boring white background.
I guess this is a wash in the end.
I hope they haven’t shown all the funny parts of this movie in the trailers.
