Dana Carvey on Leno: Best Barack Obama impression ever, plus...ethnic guys

The always-entertaining Dana Carvey dropped by The Tonight Show last night with selections from his rainbow coalition impression package. He kicked things off with Japanese business man, which got some laughs, but the audience seemed taken aback by his George Lopez, which he reprised with four — count ‘em FOUR — “Creamcicle” references throughout the interview. He also did his Al Gore, George W., and Ronald Reagan impressions and added the best Barack Obama I’ve heard yet to the presidential suite.

Carvey kept it international after the commercial with a Chinese guy impression (which went redneck at the end ) and angry Indian guy. The latter bit’s highlight was when Carvey made Jay visibly nervous with the phrase ”punk-ass little bitch” — and then said it a second time at the end, just for giggles.

All-in-all, very entertaining. Yet I can’t help but think people probably said the same thing about Rich Little.

(And is Jay the master of the segue, or what? Following the Barack impression: “Talking with Dana Carvey, talking politics. Are you in the whole global warming debate?” After the Brokaw-Olympics bit: “You mentioned the Oscars, how about the Grammys? Do you…uh…?” Seamless.)

Thoughts, PopWatchers? Did Carvey’s impressions make you squirm, laugh, or both? Best Barack ever?

Wow. I’m sure my grandmother would have found this hilarious.

And this parade of A-list guests is breathtaking.

This is what NBC dumped Conan for?

    • EWsMom

      They dumped Conan for ratings.

And the lowest Leno has got so far is a 1.1 demo – which is BETTER than Conan’s average rating (despite the same 1.5 demo lead-in Leno had on that day)

….and he’s STILL getting better ratings despite the fact bozos like you were claiming “EVERYONE IS GOING TO BOYCOTT JAY! AHHHHH!”

        LOL so True!!!

      • Brian

I’m so proud that Jay’s fans have learned how to submit online comments. Next step: blogging! After that, EWsMom, you can try your hand at using a DVR, and then, for a finale, you can try not being incontinent. Good luck, you frightened old broad!

      • Monty

Sadly enough, they still can’t program that damn clock on the VCR!

I’m just impressed they can manage to access the Internet on their Jitterbugs. Those big numbers on the keypad really seem to help!

I only watched this clip to see Dana, because I like him. And after viewing it, Leno doesn’t even need to be there. He barely says more than 5 words… Shouldn’t the host have something to offer. I am one of the viewers who left, has not returned and will not return. Watching Letterman and waiting for Conan’s new show to be announced…

    • Ray

Exactly…this show could have been done 35 years ago with Rich Little and Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Dana Carvey is a comic genius and I am wowed by his performance including this one.

  • Dwight

Mike, I hope you were not serious about his Obama, awful. His only good impressions were the two Bushes, and his Gore was Ok.

    • Mr. Burns

Agreed. Pretty poor BO impersonation. However, the call out to Rich Little seems fitting.

    • Michael

I got to concurr with Mike, his Obama impression was brilliant. The way he pointed out that Obama over clarifys his positions and creates no catch phrases was dead on. I thought it was hilarious when he changed “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” to “We need to begin a systematic process to begin to dismantle this large structure.” All Obama needs is to find a few catch phrases.

  • jennab

Dana is hilarious and my 14-year-old son and all of his friends think so, too! (They have a DVD of one of his stand up routines.) So what if it’s been done before, his impressions are funny!

Welcome back, Dana Carvey! Where have you been for the last decade? And why haven’t you hosted SNL? Best Barack Obama imitation EVER.. “We want you to begin the process of dismantling this barrier.” Priceless.

  • ExpatriateAct

I like that cursing makes Jay Leno nervous. He’s a man who’s very much in touch with his pudding-eating fanbase.

  • Eyeball

What the hell, don’t do positive write-ups of Leno’s show. You’re just encouraging them.

  • gigi

Love Dana Carvey! Still waiting on ‘Master of Disguise 2′.

  • Stephanie T.

As I much as I love Dana, the dude needs new stand up material. Still his Barack was on the money. Why isn’t he hosting SNL?

  • Katy

The Tonight Show is funny again now that Conan left and, what do you know, the ratings are thru the roof and the Tonight Show is #1 again. Go Leno!

  • chris

Leno is a boring old man and Carvey is all dried up. Conan is smart and funny. He could make a cat laugh, just not old people.

  • Niles Lesh

Carvey was brilliant, good comedy is timeless…This was his best talkshow appearance in 20 years…He actually got laughs with a Jimmy Stewart impression
…and the running George Lopez jabs were dead on !

  • bgood

Conan has never been funny! I don’t know how he even got on T.V.

  • phil chin

luv this guy!OMG hugely talented incredibly funny
