'Battlestar Galactica' as an online game? Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes.

Battlestar Galactica is going to be a videogame. According to this press release, Syfy is partnering with Unity Technologies and game publisher Bigpoint to create an online multiplayer game based on the mind-blowing TV space opera, to be released this fall. Incredible! Splendiferous! Braingasm! The mind races with possibilities. I visualize space battles, political intrigue, Centurion gunfights, and a mini-game where you try to outdrink Colonel Tigh.

There’s also the added thrill of competition. Alongside the just-released Star Trek Online and the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic, BSG Online would make this a true showdown between the three biggest sci-fi media franchises. Of course, BSG Online wouldn’t seem to lend itself to the typical quest-and-explore RPG aesthetic–unlike in those other franchises, the BSG universe is mostly dead and empty–but that just makes me more intrigued to see what the game developers will do.

What do you want to see in Battlestar Galactica Online, PopWatchers? Would you rather play as a Viper pilot, a colonial politician, a Cylon sleeper agent, or a poor mute Cylon raider? Do you think the game will honor the TV show, or is this an awful idea? It has to be better than that terrible BSG Xbox 360 game, right?

But if we know the outcome already, why would this be fun?

All of this has happened before, and it will happen again.

What I want to know is who the heck are Unity Technologies and Bigpoint? Couldn’t they hire some actual known quantities to make the game?

  • margarita

It’s probably going to end up, just like stargate worlds. Fan fare at the beginning, and then when it flops or runs out of money they distance themselves from the project.

  • Henry

They’ve been shopping this idea around for years. Not looking forward to it.

As long as I can romance Captain Apollo….J/K

    • Fantasm

As long as it’s not early Season 3 Fat Suit Captain Apollo lol.

And I would only play this game if I could seek revenge on those damn terrorists who killed Billy!

  • zozo

Sounds cool to me I’ll try it!

visualize whatever you want. A good MMO would take years to develop. This is set up for failure but I hope I’m wrong.

It will take three years of truly ground-breaking design to create, then God (even though he hates that name) will finish it for them and lots of robots will dance.

  • The Truth

An MMO is probably a bad idea for BSG. But stand alone game were you run the fleet and have to find earth would be pretty good.

    • Colter

yup, you said it. or perhaps choose to play the cylon side with an alternate ending….

I’m not a big online gamer, but the BSG board game is really good, but extremely complicated. It sometimes takes us 5 or more hours to play.

    • Jason

Odd. It only took me 33 minutes.

this is probably going to be a free browser-based game. maybe fun for a few hours. but will not compare to STO or ST:TOR.

  • Shiny

Shiny sees BSG fans dating, dancing and hooking up, baby. This is the next evolution of the huge and fun Join The Fight BSG gaming site Syfy had running while the show was on, so it’ll be the most social of BSG online sites to date.

  • AUStarwars

Hrm..Blizzard, Bioware or UNITY…tough decision of where to send my monthly subscription fees lol..seriously, this game will be awful lol

Set it during the First Cylon War, and work with the writers of Caprica and BSG to really nail the cultures and environments of the 12 Colonies. That would be awesome.

  • Adrian

Too bad Bigpoint is involved, they tend to nickel and dime you on their games.

  • Janitor

A pass for me. I loved you BSG (well, for 3 seasons anyways) but I have no interest in playing a game where it could just end with “God did it.”

    • Missing Ted

      I’m with you.

And they should have struck when the iron was hot. 4 years later… well, maybe we’ll have forgotten how badly BSG ended by then. Perhaps that’s the plan?

      • rc

I hate the end of the series a lot less than I did when it first aired, but I’m still not over the “we’re going to throw away the civilization we’ve fought to preserve and become hunter-gathers” or the dancing robots. Just not getting over it.
