'California Dreams' on 'Jimmy Fallon': Who needs 'Saved by the Bell' anyway...

In regards to his year-long quest to reunite the Saved by the Bell cast, Jimmy Fallon had sad news for his audience last night: “The dream is over.” After collecting five of the seven cast members, a reunion would not be possible. But! It turns out Fallon had the next best thing — errr, yeah, sure — waiting in the wings: A California Dreams reunion!

True, California Dreams never enjoyed the pop culture permeation that Saved by the Bell did. But so what? Who cares! Who doesn’t remember the show’s iconic theme song? “Surf dudes with attitudes…” If you do or you don’t, it doesn’t matter — the cast performed it last night at the prodding of a weirdly excited Fallon! So you can see here:

Tragic. Genius. And totally not compelling. Just how late-night television should be, and truly, how Saturday morning teen shows used to be. (I miss them!) Wouldn’t you agree?

So sad, but this was one of my favorites. Brings back memories. Jimmy really taps into the side of me that I really don’t want most people to see.

    • Nshi

Totally! How weird is it that Michael Cade looks EXACTLY like Tom Cruise? Hopefully, sans couch-jumping.

      • GROWING PAINS FAN

wow you are right, I have not seen that show in a LONG time. tv was so much better back in the day – TNBC was great in the early 90s/late 80s. Poor kids today get all the disney pop princess crap and anime, ugh. Jimmy should work on the following reunions:

        1. Growing Pains – give it time
        2. Brotherly Love – They had one of the BEST theme song EVER
        3. Student Bodies – a lesser known Canadian teen show came on FOX on Saturday mornings in late 90s about an artist and his friends who all worked at the student newspaper.

You need to get your glasses checked, he looks NOTHING at all like Tom Cruise. Yeah, they both smile a lot, but that doesn’t mean they look alike… because they DON’T!

      • Nshi

        Tom…..is that you????

      • Nshi

Look at Cade’s IMDB headshot, then talk Samantha.

      • Shannon

I would LOVE a student bodies reunion! What I wouldn’t give for that show on DVD! Cody Miller is the man!

      • Student Bodies

        Student Bodies Rules!!!!

    • Monica

      I couldn’t agree more!
I caught this live last night and am horrified to admit how much I geeked out during the entire segment. It was so cheesy, but so amazing.
      I miss late 80s/early 90s TV.

    • brandy

Totally agree. I may or may not have been jumping off my couch in excitement when the cast randomly walked out.

  • missing

where are Mark Winkle and Lorena!!!!

    • paige

yea f’real! where Are they?! i used to love this damn show- in some ways i liked it better than Saved By the Bell… i would probably still watch repeats of this like i do with SBTB sometimes… embarrassing- i think not!

      • V

Looks like this is original cast…Mark and Lorena came later, after Jenny and Matt left…

  • Emily

Awesome! Now he needs to do a Hang Time reunion!

    • Meg

      YES!

    • sunny

I forgot about hang time! and city guys! i’m vaguely remembering the theme song….”C-I-T-Y you will see why, these guys…..something something….” haha off to youtube i go!

      • GROWING PAINS FAN

City Guys? that was one of the worst TNBC shows and it was towards the end of TNBC when the ideas were running out.

      • Charlie

I’m cheesing out over here — C-I-T-Y/you can see why/these guys/the neat guys/smart and streetwise. Sadly, I knew that without needing to look it up…

      • Ha!

Wasn’t Anthony Anderson on Hang Time?

      • Mike

Yep Anthony Anderson was on Hang Time for a few seasons. So was Jay Hernandez (The Rookie, Friday Night Lights et al.) I don’t think either was original cast though…that show had a high turnover rate if I remember right.

      • Ginger

You are singing the theme to City Guys, a different later NBC morning show. Two teen ages best friend bros, one white one black. They live in NYC, go to high school and work at the high school radio station as DJs. “C-I-T-Y You can see why these guys are unique guys, smart and streetwise.”

    • SaraJ

OMG… Hang Time with Mr. Cooper right!? LOVE Mr. Cooper!

      • Kaia

Nope, nice try though! That was a totally different show. Hanging with Mr. Cooper was on ABC, part of the TGIF lineup. Hang Time was about a highschool basketball team in Indiana. A girl wanted to play on the boy’s team (ooo, scandalous) instead of being a cheerleader like everyone expected.

    • Melissa

Seriously, bring on Anthony Anderson to promote Law & Order and also conveniently reunite the cast of Hang Time. (Also had a rocking theme song, although the cast didn’t sing that one.)

I’m envisioning a basketball shootout on Jimmy’s set with the Hang Time cast.

    • Evan Meadow

No he needs to bring back together The Guys Next Door

      • Vikki Sixx

Hahaha that’s what I was about to say! I think I still have the Guys Next Door cassette tape around here somewhere and can totally sing the theme from beginning to end no problem. I LOVED that show!

  • Bee

Ahh! I loved this show! If we can’t get Saved by the Bell, I’m totally content with this reunion.

  • Sarah

I agree, I used to like this show too (along with “Hang Time” though that was a distant third). Saturday mornings used to be a field day for teen TV! Though I know there are repeats of primetime shows (like Hannah Montana and Degrassi) is there anything that’s an actual new show on only on Saturday mornings anymore? In a way, Saved By The Bell was groundbreaking b/c that was kind of an untapped market. Saturday mornings were reserved for cartoons, not teens until it came on.

  • Mike M.

Josie I was thinking the same thing. For some reason I just had to stay up and watch it. Only thing I was thinking is what happened to Lorena and Mark W. characters and that the Asian girl replaced the other girl who was there. Oh well still cool!

  • Shaun

Wow, this really does bring back memories, they were my 2nd fave after “Saved” and really, where is Mark Winkle?! He was delicious!

  • Paco

hahaha why am I geeking out so bad after watching this video?! I LOVED THE CALIFORNIA DREAMS!

  • Kallie

This brought me back to the ‘good ol’ days-the early 90′s were awesome (especially on Saturday mornings) Thanks Jimmy!

  • Jack

“Sam Woo” is still hot. Ah, she was the girl of my “California Dreams.”

  • Kate

I LOVED this! I don’t watch jimmy Fallon, but I wanted to date Jake, the older brother and when it was a good episode, Sly!
Thank you for putting this up! i would have never known!

    • jy

I’m a bit surprised that Sly’s the hot one now and Jake…where did all your hair go?

  • Robin Sparkles

Please Jimmy do a Hang Time reunion!! That would be amazing. I’d even settle for a Saved by the Bell: The New Class

  • dustin

USA High! Boy Meets World! Step by Step!

    • Janizzle

Omg I remember USA High! That was a good show!! lol

    • amber

YES!!!! A boy meets world reunion needs to happen like right now

    • maiv

      Yes! Yes! Yes!

  • jl

i loved this show!!! i miss that nbc doesn’t show these types of show on saturday mornings anymore. i agree with the other people out there, fallon needs to do a “hang time” reunion now.

  • arnold

I wonder if Jimmy watched Hey Dude on Nickelodeon. I wouldn’t mind a reunion of that.

    • Krista

I’ve always said, that if I had a talk show the VERY first thing I would do, is have a Hey Dude reunion!

      • amybraves10

Now that would be awesome. I always loved Hey Dude! I was so excited to find the first season on Itunes recently.

      • Melinda65

Never watched California Dreams, but watched Hey, Dude! and Salute your Shorts with my kids.

I’m guessing the two that Jimmy couldn’t get were Dustin “Asshat” Diamond and Lark Voorhies?

      • jbj

Close, Lark agreed, but Tiffani Theissen put out a video on Funny or Die declaring that she’s too busy to do Fallon. It was so fuuny I thought she was joking, but apparently she wasn’t. I blame her, since NO ONE would miss that d-bag Diamond.

      • Melinda65

Too busy to appear on Fallon? If they wanted her there to promote White Collar, would she still be too busy? I think not. The problematic thing about a SBTB reunion is that there’s always the possibility that Diamond would turn up, and nobody wants that. Still, I’d take 5 out of 6 (or 6 out of 7, since “Mr. Belding” was game.)

      • P

I thought People magazine reunited the Save By The Bell cast last year, with Tifani Theissen. Why couldn’t they just walk as a group from the People photo shoot to the Jimmy Fallon show? I would have loved to see them one more time interact on camera. Oh well…

    • Diana

On the NIckelodeon kick, how about a “15″ reunion? My brother and I Loved this growing up! “Is that a threat?” “No , that’s a promise.”

      • Mary

Yeah! Ryan Reynolds was on “Fifteen”!

      • Mandy

OMG FIFTEEN!!!! Matt’s drinking problem! Ashley’s perpetual sadness! The snobbery of Brooke! Geeky exchange student Olaf!!! And who could forget that badass “band” Ryan Reynolds was a drummer in? Now THAT was some classic TV! :D

      • kc

HAHA I still remember that line! My sisters & I used to say that to each other long after this show! I thought I was the only one who remembered 15, Hey Dude, and Salute Your Shorts. Good to know I’m not alone. :)

    • Aprilcot26

YES YES YES…Hey Dude! That was my favorite show as a kid!
