How to throw an Oscar party: These cookies, and plenty of punny dishes

oscar-cookieImage Credit: Courtesy of BakerellaThe Oscars are mere days away, which means it’s time to start prepping for your Oscar party. It’s more than just betting on winners and nipslips, PopWatchers! Some people take it to the next level. People like Bakerella, who made these amazing cookies. They’re just regular sugar cookies (she said…as if making regular sugar cookies is something totally easy and normal…), but they would seriously set the mood for an Academy-level shindig. But other than cookies, surely there are other Oscar-oriented foodstuffs you can feed your guests, no? Get that red carpet ready…

Because I cannot help myself, here are some pun-laden Oscar menu items:

Up in the Airheads (alternate: Up in the Pear)
The Blind Side dishes
A Single Manwich
A Cereal Man
Avatarts
Inglourious Bastarts (alternate: Inglourious Cheese Curds)
Dipstrict 9 (alternate: Biscuit 9)
Crazy Hearts of Palm Salad
The Fantastic Mr. Lox
The Lovely Scones
Ham Education

For drinks:
7 Up
The Squirt Locker
Ginvictus
The Pabst Station

The only thing I can’t come up with is a punny dish for Precious. Help me out, PopWatchers!

Maybe you should stick with the cookies after all….

Nice! They used to do something like this on TBS on Friday nights, Dinner and a Movie :) I miss those… Trying to think of one for “Precious”. I got nothing.

    • Stacie

Man, that brings me back! I also enjoyed Joe Bob Briggs.

They did one one year called Dinner and a Monkey, where they showed clips from all the Best Picture nominees, only the actors were replaced by monkeys, and the dishes weren’t named after the movies but followed the theme. I remember my favorite was for The Full Monty, and they called it Full Frontal Crudité.

      Offensive! Why that movie?

    • Dan

      Perhaps something with prosciutto?

  • Blitz

I am intrigued by “Ginvictus.” Recipe perhaps?

  • Nicole

The Squirt Locker sounds dirty…just saying. The Precious dish needs something that incorporates Ketchup. They’re kind of similar…?

    • Von Rasche’s Claw

The first naughty movie I saw was called the Squirt Locker. That’s how I got my claw.

    • Ambient Lite

I love The Squirt Locker. I plan to order one next outing.

Ha! I’m actually doing a “Best Picture Buffet” on Oscar Night for my friends and I. Prawns (for District 9), Apple Strudel (Inglourious Basterds), Irish… I mean Iraqi Car Bombs (The Hurt Locker), and so on and so on.

When I used to host my annual Oscar party, I would have punny foods, but also have any foods included in the film. So since Precious steals a bucket of fried chicken, I think you could serve that (even though it sounds cliché). Or you could have soul food like her mother Mary likes.

Or you could have drinks with Bombay Sapphire, since it is “Based on the novel Push by Sapphire”.

    • mjsmoke

That is exactly what I was serving for my Oscar dinner party!!! As an African-American I’m more than capable of frying chicken (i know, very sterotypical, but oh well)and I do love my Bombay Sapphire…

You could have Pigs Feet: Based on the Movie Push based on the novel by Sapphire

This list needs way more alcomoholic beverages:
Avatartinis (made with Blue Curacao, of course)
    District 9 Iced Tea
    Hurt Locker Colada
    Precious Punch
Legs Up in the Air (it’s a strong shooter)

    • springs

      Classic.

    • Ambient Lite

I like my Avatartini’s with Blue Curacao, Midori, mountain banshee urine, sour, glow stick plunged in the bottom, rimmed with the tears of the Na’vi with sugared rim and a garnish of nerdy embarassment.

  • Jason

A drink: Fresh Fizz: Based on the novel Push by Bombay Sapphire Gin

    • pop

      i love this.

  • Devin

Catfish: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire.

I was more for food that tied into each movie (e.g. streudel for Basterds, chicken and cider for Mr. Fox, etc.)

  • W!

Delicous-Based on The Recipe ‘Yum!’ by Saphire.
Yup. That’s the best i can do. :(

  • Drew Shave

How about meat and vegetables on a stick? Some Preciouskabobs?

  • EH

We had lots of fun at our party last year with 5 different themed cocktails for the Best Pic Nominiees…A White Russian for “Milk,” Hurricanes for “Benjamin Button” etc…The one for Slumdog Millionaire had mango and something else exotic, I forget, but it put us in the mood and made things “interesting!”

  • allie

    PRESCiutto and Melon

  • bop

My ideas are mostly drink-related. You can set up a comprehensive Avabar: include a District Wine, a Hurt Liquor for the hard stuff, and The Blend Side for frozen drinks. In honor of Steve Martin co-hosting, whip up some Steve Martinis. Definitely different from last year where “Milk” was a signature drink.

    • Big Walt

Yeah, but if you were doing it right, you weren’t drinking ‘milk.’

      • Ambient Lite

        :O

    • kd

Awesome. Best ideas on the list so far.

      • big bombs

        great idea, collegedatematch
