'Idolatry': Miraculous survivals, new contenders, and a Bowersox concern this week on 'American Idol'

The first week of American Idol‘s season 9 semifinals resulted in some strange days indeed…most peculiar mama (nothing like dropping a random John Lennon reference on a Sunday morning.) But my co-host Missy Schwartz and I have tried to make sense of the insanity. How in the blankity blank did Jermaine Sellers violently assault the melody of Oleta Adams’ “Get Here,” yet live to survive another week? Are Siobhan Magnus and Lee Dewyze the season 9 dark horses, even if one of the two contestants doesn’t know what, exactly, that means? Was there a common thread among the first four semifinalists eliminated? (Read their respective exit Q&As here, here, here, and here.) Missy and I tackle all those topics, plus I offer a PSA to Idoloonies who are voting for male contestants based solely on their hotness. Press play below, then hit the comments section with your own thoughts on these subjects of vital national importance. (Also of vital national importance? “Go look up a picture of Johnny Depp”

LOL truer words were never spoken.

    • shiloh

      LOOOVVVEEE johnny!

    • Deppfully Delicious

check out this week’s Entertainment Weekly with three covers of Johnny…oh so yummy….The man is genius, gorgeous, his role choices divine, give this man an Oscar already ok?

  • Ghost of Kelly Clarkson

Thank you, Michael, Missy and Jason, for starting my Sunday off with a smile!

    • Lisa

And thank you for giving me 10+ minutes more interesting/entertaining than the 5 hours of Idol crap I was subjected to this week. I may have to skip Idol and just watch Idolatry.

    • M.A.S.M.A.

Michael – Love your show & comments …way more fun than the actual episode. I still don’t understand why the judges slammed Tyler for doing what they told him to do. Janell set the standard for classy exit.

  • JoanieB

Iagree with David Cook. All these AI9 Idols need a lot of work.

    • Maria

      He said that?

      • Wut?

No. I don’t know what she’s talking about.

      • Pete

I’m sure she hears many voices in her head, probably talks to Jesus on a daily basis. She’s a nut job!

      • John

I think he tweeted it, but I’m not sure.

      • lyn

This person might be referring to david cook’s twitter q&a he said(but i think because it’s still early in the season): RT @fire2keepuwarm who do u like so far on idol // No clue yet. They’ve got a long way to go yet.

  • Ghost of Kelly Clarkson

Hey, Missy, there’s already a genre called “screeching soul.” Look up Alicia Keyes and her Hope for Haiti performance…

  • Mike

Siobhan Magnus was my favorite by far. I can’t stop listening to that performance. Save the Glassblower, anyone?

    • HannaB

      I agree. Love Siobhan’s voice!

    • Trisha

I feel Siobhan Magnus will make it to the final 4 and hopefully actually wins it. She has a great voice and was not afraid to pick a song that required a “voice”. She is only 19 and has that great singing ability. Hope AI staff will help her pick the right songs for that voice and she will listen to their advice. She Blows!!!!!!

    • marceebee

I think she was one of the best, but she does have vampire teeth (which could be an asset considering the current Twilight craze), and I think she could get annoying. I suspect a hidden prima dona attitude (?)

    • Idolheaed Ed

Siobhan is very special. There are few people ever that can sing as controlled and as dynamic as her. So “What does that mean?” She is the best singer the show has seen since Kelly. I don not think she will ever screw up. If she gets booted it will be the fault of the boppers.Ban the boppers!

      • Leila

She actually reminds me of Adam Lambert in terms of vocal power.

    • Angel

Siobhan is my pick right from Hollywood week. She’s a powerhouse and can wail ala Glambert and in so much control of her voice and delivery for such a young girl. And she’s quiet a looker and has poise. She’s the package. Love her. Siobhan rocks! She’ll be in the top four. From the boys, it’s Casey for me. Eye candy and ear candy and humble. Actually Todrick has mad talent but will not get the votes.

    • G-Mom

I agree! So far, I like Siobhan (I’m glad to finally learn how to pronounce her name!!). I don’t like the Adam Lambert comparison, tho. She has a better voice. Haven’t heard her screech yet.

  • Wren

    I don’t know who edits Idolatry, but I think I love him. ; )

    Cracks. Me. Up!

    • Ghost of Kelly Clarkson

      Jason Averett

      • Wren

Ah, thanks. Now I know who to stalk. (KIDDING!) Hats off to The Ghost in the Machine …

    • Lauren

      Me too!

    • Peg

I think he’s awesome too – especially since he was able to pull a few seconds of Allison’s performance that hid the train wreck that the performance was. Sorry, Slezak – you can try to pimp her as hard as you want – the fact is that she stunk up the stage this week just as bad as the contestants.

  • allie

funny stuff…and the best thing coming out of this season so far.

  • Elena

Idolatry is the only reason I’m still watching this season

    • shiloh

i totally agree. i think FOX should pay you.

    • dru

“Idolatry is the only reason I’m still watching this season”

In the words of Randy Jackson, “One hundred thousand million percent YES.”

  • sophie

Thanks for some good lazy Sunday morning entertainment. The mixed messages from the judges that these singers receive are maddening to me. I can only imagine how the contestants must feel. How can someone translate “You need to be more original”/”You need to do less and just sing it as it was written”???????

    • kct

      I agree one billion percent.

      • Hamish

Dawg, I agree one hundred bazillion percent. ;-)

  • gabe

Last season was a tough act to follow I realize that but this season is turning out to be a lackluster one. The producers will rue the day they called back that Urban kid because he will make it to the top 10 because of his hair and looks, LOL!!

    • Sally in Chicago

Nah, he will make it to the top because of Vote for the Worst.

    • Dan

Tim does have a good voice. Aside from the falsettos, which I think he will pass over in the weeks ahead, he sounded good. A major reason he probably stuck around was because he was one of the few contestants (boys or girls) that didn’t seem nervous at all when performing.

      • llevinso

Not nervous, just like he wanted to murder me in my sleep. Did you see his creepy stare? Gave me nightmares!

    • dru

Tim was fine except for the weak falsetto. There was worse than him on that stage and I don’t just mean looks. I’m not a big fan of the hair.

  • The Hael Storm

Say what you will, but Haeley was inventive, fun, in-tune, current, and fresh on a night when all the others were so awful! I’m a major Haeley fan, and the whole Hael Storm is behind her!

Go Haeley! Go Hael Storm! Visit The-Hael-Storm(dot)blogspot(dot)com!

    • Lauren

haha- that’s a ridiculous series of statements

      • Allison

Well, you could argue everything but “in-tune”, actually. But she wasn’t in-tune by any stretch of the imagination.

    • llevinso

“In-tune?” Hahahahahaha! Thanks for the laugh!

    • Holly

She is as good as gone. I give her one or two more weeks at best.

      • losmyth

        My sentiments exactly.

    • Amidala

How was she inventive? That arrangement of the song was in Across the Universe.

    • Jennifer Kate

She wasn’t “inventive” either. That arrangement of “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” is from Across the Universe.

      • Anna

        Sort of.

      • StrawberryFields737

Except in Across the Universe, Prudence was actually in-tune and didn’t butcher the song.

    • Chloe

You must not have been paying attention because Haeley sucked!! I give her another week or maybe two if she doesn’t SCREECH and ruin another good song.

      • mary

If she was so bad and I agree she definitely was out of tune and just horrible then why didn’t she receive the lowest number of votes????
Perhpas IDOl has become just a popularity contest with talent a distant 2nd. For sure Ashley and Lauren deserved to stay before screaming, out of tune Haley!

    • cat

to mary: Vote For The Worst. That is why Haeley is still here (there). Janell was not my favorite, OK, but I would MUCH rather listen to her that at least half of the “contestants” still “in”. Including Haeley and the poor excuse for “landslide” UGHHHHH Lacey. YUK worst ever

    • For you, for me

Oh Hael-storm you’ve got to be kidding. Haeley was NOT in tune during most of her song. I do think she will make the top 12, not because she’s close to being a talent singer, but it’s AI’s tradition to have atleast one awful/annoying singer to stir up drama. Haeley = Sanjaya.

  • JB

Thank you for this. I sat here laughing and nodding in agreement. This season is a trainwreck and most of that is due to the judges. They’re a mess this season and absolutely horrible to these kids. Ellen is useless and knows it. Randy is more negative then I’ve ever seen him. Simon has obviously checked out of AI already. And he’s usually the one I like! Kara?? Oh my god she is just crazy and a hypocrite. Sorry, Tyler may not have been perfect. But not one person that night was. He was still heads above Todrick and Tim.

    • Sally in Chicago

Bottom line, there are too many judges. Do they really need 4 to determine if someone goes to Hollywood or not? 4 judges just elongates the show.
And why oh why do they need an hour to tell us who goes home? They can have the guest singers in that one hour. But Seacrest walks around jabbering with the contestants….useless conversations….for an hour….and then the contestants have to sit for an hour waiting to know who stays, who goes.

      • Quinn

Yes! Gods, yes! Too many judges! AI please take note. Personally, I tune out after one of two of the critiques.

      • Redeye

I miss Paula jumping up and dancing, and speaking out with emotion when she is moved by a erformance. There are toooo many judges, and I just fast forward most of the time. Lst the singers have time to sing without ebeing rushed!! People who are complaining about the results MUST VOTE!! Let’s hope that this season will get better!!

      • forrest

An hour too long for the results? FOX wants to milk it for all its worth for more commercial time. Idol would be on every night of the week if FOX could make it that way. (course, they have NBC’s failed effort, so maybe they won’t)

      • tomm

Well, FOX sit coms have bombed when they do 30 minute results shows. So, cheaper to do 60 mins.

    • Angel

The judges were so harsh on Tyler who was gracious in return. How true when he said he didn’t get any constructive criticism during Hollywood week yet criticized for the very things they liked in him Kara even repeating Planet Tyler twice in Hollywood week. And Ellen is absolutely useless. She adds nothing to the show, not funny. And keeps repeating same banana for every critique. And she’s always in agreement with the rest when she does not come first. She gave the worst comment on Tyler. This is where I miss Paula. She would have saved the night for Tyler and say something nice to a nice guy. I will remember Tyler for the BEST audition ever in how it impacted the judges leaving Simon speechless and just staring at Tyler. It was one of the most mesmerizing auditions I’ve watched.

  • Isabella

Wow, what is Kara’s problem? First she tells Tyler that she WANTS more of his 70s rocker “moves” then she tells him to give up the “shtick”. I think Tyler was right when he said the criticism came too late. I wasn’t his biggest fan, but seriously, him over Tim Urban? His “Apologize” was so bad I had to mute my TV. I could at least handle “American Woman”.

    • BruceMpls

When it comes to the men, it was a crap shoot as to who should go home, there were so many to choose from. By the time we get down to the final 6 men, there will still be more of them deserving to go home than stay. Unless something miraculously happens this is truly a season for the women.

  • Topher

    1. I have been DYING For this week’s Idolatry since the girls crash and burn. 2. Didn’t Katie look like an extra from Glee’s Season Finale? 3. What the FACE was up with the results show? Janelle and Ashley weren’t awesome but they sure as heck didn’t blow it like other girls.

  • maz89

No mention of Lacey. No sympathy for Janell?
