'Dinoshark,' 'Sharktopus,' and the 10 greatest Syfy titles and taglines ever

Syfy recently announced plans for upcoming movies called Dinoshark and Sharktopus. Rejoice, B-movie fans! These are destined to be classics of the awesomely awful made-for-TV movie genre. But can they join the ranks of the 10 greatest Syfy movie titles/tagline combos? Because these are pure genius, and 100 percent real:

10. Disaster Zone: Volcano in New York: “Get ready for a hot time in the big City.” See also: Magma: Volcanic Disaster, NYC: Tornado Terror.

9. Dog Soldiers: “A squad of British soldiers, training in an isolated Scottish glen, find lycanthropic action under a full moon.” See also: Hellhounds, Cerberus.

8. Warbirds: “Before the allies could drop the first atomic bomb, they had to get past the Japanese fleet and its island of deadly pterodactyls.”

7. Ice Spiders: “Giant ice spiders escape from a lab and wreak havoc on a nearby ski resort.” See also: Ice Twisters.

6. Flu Bird Horror: “Mutant killer birds carrying a deadly virus attack a group of hikers on a wilderness trek.”

5. Man With the Screaming Brain: “A rich industrialist and a cab driver are fused together and must share a body to find the woman who murdered them both.”

4. Mansquito: “First they hunted for a cure, now they’re hunting a monster.” See also: Man-Thing

3. Carny: “Death becomes the main attraction when a traveling carnival brings a genuine New Jersey Devil to a small town.”

2. Malibu Shark Attack: “When a tsunami hits Malibu, you’re not safe from prehistoric sharks — even if you’re out of the water!”

1. Sharks in Venice: “When man-eating sharks go out for Italian, the city of love will become the city of blood.”

I heartily encourage you to follow Syfy’s head of original movies Karen O’Hara’s Twitter@syfymovies for updates like “Spent half [an] hour discussing what a sharktopus should look like, how many mouths it should have and how it should kill. That’s my job!” Never change, Karen.

Did I skip your favorite Syfy classic, PopWatchers? Did dinosaur soldiers invade your Alaskan town, demanding the evil wizard from Greek mythology reverse his disease-spreading spell?

*LOL* Gotta love Syfy Original Movies. Honestly, I’m completely excited about one coming up called “Stonehenge: Apocalypse” (still waiting on a premiere date) because it’s got two of my favorite sci-fi actors, Misha Collins (Castiel, Supernatural) and Torri Higginson (Dr. Weir, Stargate: Atlantis) as the headliners. And a couple of stellar Canadian sci-fi actors as supporting cast.

Where’s the love for “Anonymous Rex” (featuring Daniel Baldwin and Sam Trammell of “True Blood”)?

The premise is that dinosaurs faked their own extinction and live among us in modern times.

    Seriously.

HAHAHA I wish I could have seen this movie. I hope they replay it soon!!!

“Dog Soldiers” is not a Syfy original movie! They might be showing it now, but it originally came out in 2002. It was directed by Neil Marshall, who did “The Descent,” “Doomsday,” and the upcoming “Centurion,” and it is AWESOME. Kevin McKidd and Sean Pertwee are fantastic in it–it’s truly one of the scariest, goriest werewolf films I have ever seen. Unless it’s a remake of that film, which I truly hope it isn’t!

I’m definitely looking forward to “Stonehenge: Apocalypse,” though!

    • wg

Agreed – Dog Soldiers does not belong on this list.

Damn you, Syfy, now I want to see “Man with the Screaming Brain.” Bruce Campbell is the god of movie cheesiness.

    Also, “Manquito”? AWESOME.

    • Kat

      Sorry, Mansquito*

  • Dan

    SS Doomtropper

If the Incredible Hulk was a Nazi. awesome bad.

Frankly, I love Bruce Campbell, and B grade sci-cheese, but the crap they have been putting ouot is just unpalpable.

    love syfi

Dog Soldiers, although it may have a cheesy name, is not a B-movie! Okay, with that out of the way, I love my b-movies, especially of the nature-gone-wild variety! Or any type of monster!

I *heart* SyFy originals! I have lost many a Saturday getting sucked into movie after movie…my husband thinks I’m nuts, but I’m totally a sucker for them.

  • Bug

Thor: Hammer of the Gods!! Vikings and werewolves and telepathy!!!

  • Rick

Was “Transmorphers,” the tale of humankind and an robot-alien war, a SyFy original?

  • BDJ77

Looks like Dog Soldiers might be a remake. The SyFy site lists actors who were not in the Neil Marshall version and it is listed as an ‘original.’ Stinks because the 2002 version was awesome.

  • Flick

Does anyone know if Alien Apocalypse with Bruce Campbell was a Syfy original? If so, hands down my favorite.

  • dt

Not everything they show on SyFy is an original. Shark Attack 3 (aka The Greatest Movie Ever Made), Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus and many others were not made by the network. Honestly, I wish SyFy would run more original movies, as they are amazing entertainment.
