Alex O'Loughlin tops 'Hawaii Five-0' pilot: Make this work!

Alex O’Loughlin is set to star in CBS’ reboot of Hawaii Five-O. He’ll take on the role of Det. Steve McGarrett originated by Jack Lord. This show needs to work: O’Loughlin headlines two CBS series that last one season or less (Moonlight, Three Rivers), he’s unlucky; three, he’s the new Mark Feuerstein (before he landed Royal Pains).

Will it work? I’m hopeful. According to Michael Ausiello, the pilot is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY exec producer Peter Lenkov. Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim has already been tapped as state police officer Chin Ho Kelly. And the detective role is a good fit for  O’Loughlin, who looks good in a suit and has a charisma that keeps you guessing. He can do action, romance the ladies, and probably call Gavin MacLeod “Chicken” with a straight face. (Yeah, you’ll want to watch that Hawaii Five-O clip, along with a rare syndication sales reel and Christopher Walken guest appearance after the jump). If the setting doesn’t allow O’Loughlin to be shirtless, it should at least let him tackle perps in the water so his shirt clings to him and make this update as sexy and slick as Burn Notice. If the new Steve McGarrett were Michael Westen with a badge, I’d tune in each week.

What are your hopes for the new Hawaii Five-O? Is this the project that will finally make O’Loughlin, also the leading man in CBS Films’ April romcom The Back-up Plan with Jennifer Lopez, the star the Eye thinks he is?

Can ONE Alex O’Loughlin show work out? The guy is so talented, and I don’t think his new rom com is going to exactly work out.

  • Mel

I hope it works. Alex is a good actor. If this doesn’t work out Alex needs to get away from CBS. They had a good show with Moonlight and now they are seeing that they should have left Moonlight on.

    • TJ

I agree…they totally messed up letting MoonLight cancel! Alex was great in it and it was a good show! I hope this works for him.

      • teresa

TOTALLY messed up! But I don’t think CBS is smart enough to have figured that out! Alex needs to get away from them….

all i have 2 say is BRING MOONLIGHT BACK!!! but i hope this is good CBS totally sucks nowadays!! now that the hottie with the bodi is gone!!!!

I LOVED Hawaii Five-O when I was a kid and had a huge crush on Steve McGarret/Jack Lord. Fast forward 30-some years and I have a huge crush on Alex O’Loughlin so yeah, I hope this series takes and stays on the air for a long, long time!! Alex is sooo sexy and charismatic and will do a fabulous job with this role. Can’t wait to see it!

I agreed, I grew up watching Hawaii Five O. Alex O’Loughlin will make a great Steve McGarret.
Both are tall and sooo sexy! I do
hope this remake will be a smash!!!!!

Ever since i saw him in Moonlight, i have become smitten. Check out his bio on to see all the other things he has appeared in. He is a true gentleman and talented actor. If CBS lets his third show go down the toliet they only have themselves to blame, and Alex should run far far away from CBS. I wish him the best and i will tune into whatever he is in.

I agree with you reddragon. he is so hot and talented. since I watched the re-run of Moonlight I’ve become smitten with him too. he has such a character that you will get attracted him no matter what rule he plays. I hope his new series work out. Good luck to him and to the CBS I guarantee to you it will work just keep him longer than one series.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see where CBS puts it on its schedule. They do not have a lot of openings except for Sunday or possibly Friday evenings where it will sadly die before it has a chance. They need to air it two or three times after NCIS and let it find its audience.

I enjoy both Alex and Daniel Dae Kim so I hope this is a success for them both.

  • paige

You had me at Daniel Dae Kim.

    • paige

and then you lost me at CBS :-(

Well he would have been great in the ‘Criminal Spin-Off’ but this is even better. He was gorgeous in his short stint as a cop in ‘The Shield’. I even liked ‘Three Rivers’ – to smile him smiling so much (and what a smile) was worth the show alone.

  • Cindy R

He doesn’t need to channel Jack Lord. This will be Alex’s Steve McGarrett…an original for a talented actor who time has come. CBS treat your star right! You owe him!

  • Sandy

I am a devoted Moonlight and Alex O’Loughlin fan. I hope this works out for him. He is such a talented actor. And, of course, I am hoping for a Moonlight movie!

  • rene

I’ll watch Mr. O’Loughlin drink water…the man has talent! Along with so much MORE. And, it sounds like the creators are just as talented as Mr. O, so it should be a great combination. Hopeful that the masses watch, cuz Mr. O’Loughlin is definitely worth watching. Thanks for the news!!!

  • Kate

I’d watch Alex if he was just reading the dictionary aloud. As with his other roles, he will research the part and nail it. He’s a tremendous actor and deserves to have a hit show. Let’s hope CBS doesn’t put the show in a time slot that is like shooting ducks at the fair….as they did with 3R’s. Congrats Alex! I know you’ll do a fantastic job…now, CBS, you do the same.

  • Josie

Alex will be great in this role. He’s already shown he can play a dynamic detective and a tough cop. Alex is a very talented actor and great to look at so I hope the writers do their job and create an action packed show.

If it’s worked in as he’s McGarett’s grandson then maybe, but I still say that recently there have been other tv show remakes that have been either bad or just plain awful. Sometimes, if it ain’t broke, it’s just better not to fix it. We shall see.

  • Rusty

Hawaii? Can you shoot it in CHINA so none of his fans will ever stand a chance to run into him??

I hope you seriously don’t compare him to Mark Feuerstein. Alex is a trained actor who happens to set the women aflame with his personality and good looks. So he has been smacked by the big EYE (CBS) and now we look to the Evil Eye to do Alex right.

Too bad it’s a remake, he deserves FRESH writing.

    • Jax

I watch this show full of hope because I still watch reruns of the old Five-0. I’ll continue with the old Five-0. This show was an insult to the original.
