'Dear John': The kiss ranks up there with 'The Notebook,' but what about the movie?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Nicholas-Sparks-kissImage Credit: Tatum: Scott Garfield; Gosling: Melissa Moseley Dear John had an impressive weekend at the box office, finally knocking Avatar out of the top spot (in, granted, its seventh week in release) and posting the biggest Super Bowl weekend opening in history. What’s not up for debate: Amanda Seyfried’s hair looked amazing in the film and Channing Tatum’s a better crier than I expected. The two issues we do need to discuss:

1) Is that lift-and-sit rain kiss between Tatum and Seyfried hotter than Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams’ lift-and-carry rain kiss in The Notebook? I’m going to argue yes. SPOILER! It’s their first kiss, which makes the PG-13 passion — sexy yet gentle — unexpected.

2) Where does this Lasse Hallström-directed movie rank among Nicholas Sparks adaptations? If, like me, you’ve somehow seen all five of the films, it hasn’t been in vain. Now, you too must rank them in order of enjoyment. For me, that would be: No. 1 The Notebook, No. 2 A Walk to Remember, No. 3 Dear John, No. 4 Message in a Bottle, and No. 5 Nights in Rodanthe. The Notebook will be everyone’s No. 1, of course, but from there it could get interesting…. It really comes down to how frustrating you found each film’s inevitable twist. (Tip: If you know all the words to “Only Hope,” A Walk to Remember is Your No. 2.)

I would rank them the same except I would switch nights of rodanthe and message in a bottle…that was my least favorite. Love the notebook, love a walk to remember and know love dear john.

    • Margaret

Yip I’d agree – love the s/t too to ‘A Walk to Remember’. Why oh why can’t Shane West get good material?

  • Moe

The movie sucked HARD!! Nights in Rodanthe will always be number 1 followed by a walk to remember. I dont care what you say, Mandy Moore should have been nominated for an oscar for that movie.

This comment is sarcastic, right? It’s gotta be. Nights in Rodanthe is one of the worst movies ever made. I actually lost a bet and had to go see that movie. We were laughing hysterically when the horses came running up the beach.

      • Ambient Lite

Okay, the horses were laughable and anyone with a pulse saw that coming a mile away, BUT there’s NO WAY it was one of the worst ever made (and I saw Glitter)!

      • crispy

Well, I may have been a little drunk at the time, but I do remember the dialogue being horrendous. And the constant sweeping helicopter shots of that house had us giggling.
Diane Lane is quite lovely though.

So it’s possible I might have been seeing the movie (actually, all of those movies) through wine-goggles, but I will always carry a torch for it. Maybe it was the whole storm scenerio… heh

      • noam

i hadn’t read the book, so i momentarily thought she was going to throw herself in the path of the horses and get trampled to death. i was more than slightly disappointed when she didn’t…

    • Madd

Mandy Moore was probably the best part of that movie, but an Oscar? That’s kind of a stretch.

  • Jenn

#1 should be A Walk to Remember. Such a great movie. Way better than The Notebook. (Though I think I am the only woman in the world who isn’t the biggest fan of The Notebook.)

    • Maserda

Nope, you’re not alone. I’m not a big fan of The Notebook either, and I’m a woman in her mid-20′s.

      • Julie

I didn’t like the Notebook either, I like Dear John much more ooooohhhhhhh.

    • whatevs

I hate Nicholas Sparks in general. Will never see one of those movies.

      • Nerwen Aldarion

        So why are you here????

      • Natasha.

Than dont be on this Website if you feel that Way. Because others of us like that, We dont need youre stupididy.

    • Erin

You’re not alone. I can’t stand The Notebook.

    • LDL

My favorite is A Walk To Remember, then Notebook. Then Dear John. The reason I like Dear John is this: Amanda Seyfried. I worship Amanda Seyfried.

    • Kisha

I’m female and I thought it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen . I tend to like period dramas more than modern romance films.

  • Brynna

Mine is the same order as yours! Waiting to see where Last Song fits in.

    • Madd

It will be very, very low. Miley Cyrus is a horrific actress and it’s very unbelievable that someone would fall that hard for her character.

    • Natasha.

No where. That movie is one of the WORST films in have seen in my life time.

  • Briggs313

ehhh Moore for an oscar? Bit of a stretch – I agree with the ranking but I’d switch the last two – and Dear John should have stuck more to the book – there wasn’t enough development between the 2 characters but they both looked amazing!

  • Juniper

A Walk To Remember made me cry so hard that I actually got mascara IN my eyes. Black tears… yikes. I looked like a hot mess.

  • Bob

    Cuz you SUCK JENN!

  • Cleve

    1. The Notebook 2. Dear John 3. A Walk To Remember 4. Message In A Bottle 5. Nights In Rodanthe 6. Last Song :X

  • Ambient Lite

Whoa! In that list (though I haven’t seen Dear John – and might not at all), I’d put Nights in Rodanthe wayyy closer to the top. Bawled my eyes out with every one of them – and kinda hated myself for it – but I love the chemistry between Richard Gere and Diane Lane.

  • Jane

Is it just me or does every Nicholas Sparks film adaptation have a kiss-in-the-rain moment?

  • Diane

I just watched Nights in Rodanthe on cable and felt SO stupid. Did I forget that in Nicholas Sparks world, love=someone must die? I hate his movies.

  • NE

Nights in Rodanthe was terrible. A pretty bad book too. The Notebook was MUCH better.

    • Lily

No way. The book was a thousand times better. If the movie would have been more faithful to the book it would have been better too.

  • NHS

A Walk to Remember is the best. Made me choke and cry. The novel is also a good read.
The Notebook is number 2. Again a pretty good read as well.
but besides those two all are soooo the same.

I was not expecting much from Dear John. I went to see it because I had read and enjoyed the book and I must say that the move it self stands alone. What I liked about the movie its that it is more of a love story between John and his father then it it about John and Savannah. Savannah is merely a conduit and a road block the relation ship between father and son. She opened John’s eyes to who his father was bring them together and then Broke up with John keeping him away from his father in the last years of his life. That is what made the movie special. The scene in the hospital hallway is one of the most heartbreaking captured on film. Richard Jenkins is an amazing actor and Channing proved he could hold his own.

    • Lily

Agreed. I used to hate Channing Tatum as an actor. After Dear John, I give him props. He really blew me away in that scene with Richard Jenkins.

  • Lizzie

I love his books, but yes you always know someone, in someway is gonna die.
