'Lost': A side-by-side comparison

Filed under: Lost and tagged: ,

I’m still processing Lost‘s season premiere, which might be why I’m so drawn to this side-by-side video of the opening scene from the pilot and from “LA X.” Keep your eyes peeled for things that are different, just like you used to with Highlights.

What’d you spot, PopWatchers?

In the pilot, Jack says of Bernard, “sounds like a very smart man”, while in “LA X” he says, “sounds like a smart man.”

It’s official: Bernard is slightly dumber in the flash-sideways.

    • ann

      ha ha! funny.

    • Jim

Ceballos, you’ve just cracked this whole thing wide open.

    • mike s

      lmao

    • heromommy

LOL Ceballos! I think Rose lost some weight goin’ sideways.

      • Peach

Jack did too. He lookin GOOOOOOOD these days!!

    • Booyah

lol… Or maybe the rest of the world is smarter in the sideways world?

      • Yan

LMFAO!!!!! Ceballos, u are by far a genius! lol

    • RA

      you win 100 internets ceb

    • Shotgun Willy

Dude! Cedric Ceballos has solved the mystery of LOST! Did you do it butt naked like Doc Jensen as well?

    • Peach

      Haha well spotted!

    • andrea

I also read that Jimmy Kimmel is the smoke monster on another comment area on this site.

  • Mary

    Let’s see…..
Cindy the flight attendant was wearing a blue shirt in one and a white shirt in the other, Jack’s hair was different, Cindy gave him one bottle of vodka in the new timeline instead of 2, and Jack was in a different seat in the new timeline.
    I’m sure there are more!

    • Celia

Hurley says he’s lucky instead of unlucky. Shannon, Michael, Walt, and many of the others are not on the plane. Desmond IS on the plane.
Charlie tries to commit suicide this time. In the first one, he was just disposing of the drugs so he wouldn’t get in trouble.
Jack is the nervous one and Rose is not.
      Jack’s neck is bleeding.

      • Read the Article

But none of those were in the side by side scenes. And yeah, we already know all those.

      • jason

In the pilot Jack only removes ONE bottle from his jacket in the jungle…

      • Jenny P

Charlie just tried to swallow the drugs so he didn’t get caught. Which makes sense, since in the original timeline the flight attendants were too worried about a crashing plane to focus on some addict locked in the bathroom, which let him off scott free.

      • Duane

Jenny is right. Not sure why so many people think he tried to kill himself. Just because he said he shoulda died doesn’t mean it was a suicide attempt. It can’t be that easy to intentionally choke yourself out by swallowing a little bag.

      • Colin

Jack only had one bottle left in the pilot when he got to the jungle because he put the other bottle’s worth in his weak drink. And he didn’t spill any in the process like he did in LAX.

      • Lynn

The type of clouds are different. Originally they were fluffy puff balls. Now they’re one stream of clouds. Wow. Does this mean the bomb changed the entire weather pattern for eternity? If so, I want the flash sideway’s world. We just got 28 inches of snow yesterday and are due for another foot or two in a couple of days. This isn’t an area that gets that much snow, usually, so I want the parrallel universe with different weather. lol

  • paige

    this was awesome.

    • Ceballos

I’m sure you’ve probably seen it, but, in case you haven’t, the “Lost crash in real time” video on youtube also delivers.

      • MsSuniDaze

        That was awesome. Thanks Ceballos.

      • amj

I agree that was pretty cool, thanks Ceballos.

  • Jeffrey C

Aisle v Window seat for Jack, view of wing or clear clouds, Rose’s hairstyle, Cindy’s Uniform, Vodka, slightly different phrases.

    • Ariel

In the old timeline video, I think they cut out Charlie rushing by as Jack stood up from his window seat to go to the bathroom. He sat back down in the aisle seat as turbulence set it. So, not a continuity error.

      • watched17times

It’s obvious now that these are not errors, but have slight differences for a reason. The writer’s want to make it clear that things have changed. The one thing I have been wondering about though is that since the past on the island has changed, and Dharma-ville is under water, I wonder if Juliet was slipping into her sideways timeline while she was dying because she never came to the island in the first place???? Therefore she shouldn’t be there. Maybe this gives us a clue that she and Sawyer are going to have coffee on the mainland..hehe OR she is going through the same thing Charlotte did before she died?? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Did you notice when Jack looked into the mirror in the bathroom, he could tell he looked older than he was supposed to look? I think he has some part of a memory somewhere.

    • adomek

I think the reason the view is different is because he’s in a different row. I didn’t notice for Jack but Hurley is definitely in row 33 and in the pilot they were all in rows that corresponded with the numbers.

      • adi

        great catch!

      • andrea

I also noticed that 815 is in the number sequence too…
        4, 8 15 ,16,23,42
It could be a telephone # too
        (481) 516-2342 someone call it

      • andrea

never mind there is no 481 area code!

    • Captain Obvious

All the actors appear to have aged six years in the “LA_X” scenes.

      • jake

how odd. looks like the producers have another question to answer

  • Via

All I could notice was how much hotter Fox was six years ago.

    • Zoey

Really? He’s always been hot to me.

      • LittleMissSunshine

I personally thought he looked better now (not that I would have kicked him out of my bed before … LOL), but I’ve never been a big fan of guys with that buzz cut.

    • caryn

yeah…. he was wayyyy hotter 6 years ago. the hairstyle? can it being just slightly shorter make a difference?

    • amy

totally agree. his hair is too seventies in the new clip.

      • andrea

forget Fox what about SAWYER? have you seen him with short hair and shaven? WOW!!

      • Lynn

No one, but Marines, had hair that short in the 70s, not even parents and grandparents. lol

  • Mothra

Too Cool! Ok what I got that wasn’t mentioned before:
1)You can see the wing out of the window in the pilot, can’t in LA X

    2) Rose says,”It’s normal” in the pilot. So the LA X sideways reality isn’t “normal”? Both the Flight Attendant and Rose are wearing lighter colors in LA X.

    Must watch it again….

    • ssk

I think the color in the videos is different, not the clothes themselves. The clothes seem to be the same and I doubt they had them made exactly the same, but just the tiniest bit lighter.

      • dave

        I think you’re wrong.

      • Mike

Haha, wow, Dave seems rather aggressive. ssk is right, look at it again–the videos have different tints (the left being bluer and darker) but the clothes are the same.

      • t

The clothes are the same – the same pieces from wardrobe. Just color quality difference in the vids

    • mtraptor

Actually, Jack says “it’s normal” in the pilot. Rose says it in LA X.

      • watched17times

There were a lot of differences, but things ARE different now. Things changed a little bit because of changes back in 1977. They are all on a slightly different “string of time”. It’s amazing to think about how it would affect everyone and not just certain people. It’s supposed to be different so there’s not much point in analyzing every single difference. I do think Juliet’s death sent her to her other life off the island. She seems to have been passing back and forth in those last moments.

  • rerun

That’s awesome. Wasn’t aware how close it was.

  • vag

many things are different….in the pilot rose is the one who was calmed by jack…not the case now…also desmond was never even on the flight in the pilot cause he was already on the island.

    • Amanda

Yeah! I was really confused by the Desmond thing. I don’t remember his story all that well, so does anybody have an answer as to why Desmond was on the plane? I did like that Desmond has now actually met Jack “in another life.”

      • Lynn

Yes, the writers do – but they aren’t telling. lol We’ll have to wait and hope we find out. ;)

  • jessicomposed

It seems to me like the plane didn’t crash this time. Could be mistaken…

    • Wil

      lol good eye. :P

    • MaiTaiTranny29

I really did laugh out loud.

    • Mirillie

You are too funny! Thanks for that bit of humor.

    • Mike

      Are you sure about that?

      • watched17times

Some people are pretty observant aren’t they? Obviously not a true LOST fanatic. As my name says, I have watched all of the seasons at least 17 times, probably more though. I have already watched LAX 1 and 2 about 7 times. Crazy I know. I like to make sure I pick up all of the details, like the plane not crashing. lol

    • Lynn

Yes, this is the flash left sideways. It also crashes in the right flash sideways. lol

  • mark in nyc

in one of them the oxygen masks fall and it seems like the plane is going to go down.
In the other one it didn’t seem that way at all.
I can’t believe I am the first person to notice that.

    • Gina

      haha Touche.

    • Peach

I don’t think you were the first to notice that, it’s just that you’re the first one to feel the need to make that incredibly obvious observation.

      • mdill

u took the words right out of my mouth.

      • Your mom

I think you were the first one not to get that it was a joke.

  • Kelmel

on the pilot version, why does it look like Jack is sitting in the window seat in the beginning, then all of a sudden when he starts talking to Rose he’s in the aisle?!? anyone else notice it??

    • Jack

Wow – five years later and you spotted an obvious continuity error! (….or is it?!???)

      • Jack

Sorry, Keimel, that came off as being sarcastic. I was actually serious – I believe it’s a continuity error!

      • andrea

Charlies’ hair is different too! Charley had long blonde mohawk in this one it was dark and shaved. So Is Desmonds’.

      • Lynn

The entire thing is a different continuty. No error. Done on purpose – thus Rose is calm, her hubby returns from the bathroom, Jack’s nervous, Desmonds there, Hurley’s lucky, Sun is on the plane with Jin (she was going to ditch him at the airport.) It’s all different because it is a parrellel universe. Think about it – would an H-bomb sink the island and keep everything on the island still there? Atom bomb = a big hole, not houses, vegetation (especially since it’s 30 years later), and the statue foot still around, under water or anywhere. And Penny did find Desmond when Desmond didn’t push the button the time it brought the plane down, so what happens to the island can, and has, affected the rest of the world – especially if an atom bomb blows up the energy source as it is discovered.

I have no idea what the writers are planning (duh, no kidding, huh? lol) but they are thorough enough that they’ve avoided continuity “errors” for the flash sideways plane scene.

I am curious though – did Locke really go on the walkabout or is he just pretending he did? If he did, that too would be different, and worthy of wondering what changed in the world for that to happen.

    • Scott

Total continuity error. Surprised no one mentioned it 6 years ago.

      • Gabby

Well, to nitpick the pilot, Cindy should still have been in the shot where it was first noticeable that Jack switched seats. The moment the camera angle changed she disappeared even though the seat she was standing next to was still in the shot.

    • BK

Actually, if you watch the pilot you clearly see Jack get out of the window seat and move closer to Rose. They cut-up the pilot version cuz it plays longer than the LA X version. Booyaa!!!

      • Lisa Simpson

That was what I thought. It seemed shorter.

  • killervirgo

sideways rose is reading a magazine.

    • jslost

It also seems Rose’s necklace is too short to have Bernard’s wedding ring on it. (in LA X)

      • Katie

I think she is actually wearing it- it’s easier to see in a bigger video but i think i saw a ring on her left hand.

      • Ring

It wouldn’t be her ring. It was Bernard’s ring she wore, because his fingers swelled when he flew.

    • Mary Jo

      Weekly Woodsman magazine!

      • Mary Jo

Thinking Horace might be the centerfold.

  • Wil

Matthew Fox has aged since then, and I noticed a few other things, but generally they did a good job in recreating it.

  • Sam

I’m surprised they didn’t bother with hair continuity (Sawyer’s was particularly out). It’s not like they couldn’t have told the actors to maintain a similar look each season so the alt timeline wouldn’t clash with old one. It’s not a big deal, just seems odd to me.

    • Jessica

I think one of the cool – and convenient for the writers – things about the whole concept is that everything is different now in the sideways version, so if their hair is different or the blouse is different, it’s because everything else has changed.

      • Lisa Simpson

That’s true. Remember that the timeline was changed in 1977, not 2004.

      • Sam

Yeah, but they were obviously trying to capture that look – the sides of Sawyer’s hair were wetted back like they were in the pilot, but his hair was too long to handle it.

      • Eric

have you thought about the possibility that they are in their 1977 bodies … hence jack’s cut … previuosly in the show over the seasons they have done of good job of cutting hair or adding wigs to differentiate time evrn filming ahead or after scenes to accomidate continuity… why now would they not do that

    • Chase Dunnette

If you recall with Sawyer they didn’t even keep hair continuity with him in season one, between the pilot and the finale. So I mean it happens lol

      • Sam

THat always annoyed me actually. Where Jack had a chaved head for three seasons, Sawyer’s grew about 10 inches in the same space of time!

    • Q

The hair thing is just one more example of how we have to sort out what’s different because the writers intended it to be different, and what’s different just because of practical issues. I.e., Shannon is back in Australia not because they didn’t want her back, but because Maggie Grace wasn’t available.

      • Eric

Ya know … not getting everybody or being unavailable probably gave them the idea to do the whole slightly different timeline in the first place … I’m sure they were gonna do the plane not crashing but this made them think out of the box so you should thank Maggie Grace for helping to create a better mystery and this very page of differences

    • Capt. Obvious II

They were stuck on an island for years….hair suddenly stops growing when there isn’t a Supercuts for a thousand miles???????

    • monk

there is a variation in the variables.

  • TB

Fascinating! I mean, I knew some things were different, but it’s very interesting to see them side by side.
