Hey, what's Thora Birch been up to?

Enid Coleslaw would not approve: Thora Birch’s latest cool-girl indie project is The Pregnancy Pact, inspired by the true story of teenagers in Gloucester, Mass. who attempted to conceive at the same time. I totally thought this project, co-starring Camryn Manheim and Nancy Travis, might be a Lifetime original series. It just had that vibe. But no. Lifetime movie. Here’s Thora doing her best Wes Bentley-in-American Beauty by shoving a camera into high school girls’ faces. On the upside, she still looks about their age.

Okay, who’s watching this, besides Mandi? (Saturday, 9 p.m. ET)

I think you mean the “true” story, since the allegations stemmed from a journalist suggesting that was the explanation for the pregnancies and not from any actual source saying, “We had a pact.”

Regardless, poor Thora Birch. She was one of my favorite young actors and seemed to have a great career ahead of her. Hopefully this Lifetime movie is just one blemish on an otherwise good career.

Was it a journalist? If I remember correctly, wasn’t it a school principal that was accused of making it up?

Well… I wouldn’t call this a “blemish” on her acting career– the premier of this movie was quite successful… actually the most successful (in number of viewers) since 2002.

A lot of wonderful actors have made not so popular (but still great quality!) movies on Lifetime.. It’s not a bad thing, just another genre of filmmaking.

why do lifetime movies get such a bad rap? not all of them are bad. the Georgia O’keffe movie was actually pretty good and it was a lifetime movie

    • Madd

True! Prayers for Bobby was also a pretty good movie and had some great performances. That said, 98% of Lifetime movies actually are bad. Even ones with a good cast sometimes- I saw one with Timothy Hutton (who’s one of my favorite actors) and Tilda Switon and it was still pretty bad.

      Also prayers for Bobby.

I’m only slightly embarrassed to admit that I will be watching and have already programmed the dvr.

Poor Thora Birch. She deserves better. Hell, she’s not even the STAR of this thing.

She needs the Tarrantino comeback treatment. Something drastic, out of left field and shocking.

I seem to remember some conflict with her parents in terms of controlling her career.

She is stunningly beautiful and exterememly talented! “Ghost World” is still in my Top 10 of the decade.

Come back to the 5 and dime, Thora Birch, THora Birch!

Ooh, she and Tarantino would be perfect together.

As for her parents, didn’t she get emancipated in order to do the nude scene in American Beauty?

  • Madd

Thora Birch is a good actress- she had some of the more ridiculous lines in American Beauty and pulled them off. Hopefully she can get better work (I like the Tarantino idea).

  • Carlitos

I third the Tarantino proposal. I absolutely love both “Ghost World” and “American Beauty”, despite the latter becoming fashionable to hate. (Yes, I’m talking to you, Madd)

    • Madd

I like American Beauty, it’s a good movie with a lot of great performances. It’s just that some of the parts with the teenagers are odd.

      • Carlitos

Cool then. Just remember that being a teenager is inherently odd.

Am watching the movie right now thanks to the Mrs. Darn you Idol for not being on tonight!

Fo’ shizzle a total stretch for Thora. IMHO, it’s a bummer Scarlet Johannsen got all fame and glory while Thora (who I feel is significantly more talented) got stuck making craptastic tv movies.
