'Cougar Town' recap: The kiss heard 'round the block

Filed under: Television and tagged: , ,

You know a sitcom is good when you laugh out loud even when you’re watching alone, and when you actually care about the characters enough to say, “No, no, no!” when they do something they shouldn’t, like Grayson and Laurie kissing at the end of last night’s episode. But let’s back up.

I believe Cougar Town is the only show on TV that serves more wine than Brothers & Sisters. A bottle of red loosened Jules up enough to tell Jeff (guest star Scott Foley, you will be missed!) “You’d make a pretty girl… Seriously, I have a skirt that’s a little too big for me, and god knows, you’ve got the legs. All we got to do is shave you down, and then tuck some stuff back up…” At first, Jeff resisted, but ultimately, he tried it on. This, plus his willingness to carry Jules up stairs (notice the space there, which means lazy me sees this as beneficial outside the home), and the fact that he laughed off Jules tearing into him for being 11 minutes late for dinner and did the “does this look ridiculous” naked shimmy, makes Jeff a keeper in my book. Jules, however, thought they were getting too comfortable too fast — and even though she didn’t want to see Jeff with other women, and she wasn’t seeing anyone but him, she couldn’t handle the pressure of the word “exclusive” and had to break it off. For the sake of the show, which is supposed to be about a fortysomething woman on the prowl, this relationship couldn’t last forever. And I suppose it’s nice to see the message that a playboy can get to the point that he’s looking for commitment. But seriously, I don’t know how Jules, who’s only been divorced for eight months, turns away a man that can be that sweet and still retain some of his bad-boy sexiness. (I also can’t believe I just called Scotty Foley bad-boy sexy. Good for him.)

Now, we can move on to Laurie… She woke up in bed with Smith, her new law student beau. “I feel a little weird.” “Why? Because you spent the night on the second date?” “Because you didn’t try to have sex with me. I mean, I guess it’s nice to wake up with my panties on, I just don’t know what to make of it. Are you gay? It’s okay if you are. I have turned a lot of gay dudes straight, although that could just be a line that guys use on me because they know how much I love a challenge.” Actually, it was because he likes her and thought if they slept together and he disappeared for three months, they wouldn’t be able to pick up when he returned. Laurie, who processed his leaving as a break-up, felt the need to handle it accordingly, by kicking things spray painting something and sleeping with one of his friends. Grayson tried to talk her out of the latter, and sent Travis to save her (which he did) when she went off with Smith’s friend Doug (wave, Doug!), but then Laurie went to thank Grayson for looking out for her. He was in a fragile place, having heard Jules say that she and Jeff were getting serious (the look on Josh Hopkins’ face was heartbreaking) and telling Bobby all about his marriage. Somehow, they ended up back at his place and kissing, which Andy saw as he took Stan on a midnight walk so Jules could talk to Ellie about how they should just kill Andy so they could get married. Ellie told Jules she wouldn’t have let Jeff go if he was the right guy (true) and that there is a man for her — he may even be right under her nose. Do you think Ellie, who wasn’t surprised when Andy finally revealed that Grayson and Bobby have feelings for Jules, actually believes Grayson is the man for her?

More great lines from last night’s episode:

“I’ve already done six things to it in my head. May I touch it?” — Barb to Jules, after Jules asked her what she thought of Jeff

“Oh, that’s why I married you. He gets a couple drinks in him and he starts dropping the question bombs.” — Ellie about Andy, after he asked Jules and Jeff if they were in love. (And P.S. Thanks, Cougar Town writers, for having Ellie answer that question. I buy that as a reason why she would be attracted to Andy.)

“Are you guys playing Penny Can? Is it finally real?”— Andy to the dudes, playing Bobby’s comically primitive game

“[singing] Little pregnant girl. What? In my head, the song is about teenage pregnancy…. I want to write music that matters, Jeff.” — Jules, performing the first single, “Girl, Don’t Hold That Against Me” from Jeff’s college boy band, Da Booty Crew, with Jeff and Grayson

“Seriously, want him more.” “I can’t!” — Ellie to Andy, after Andy begged Bobby not to leave

“I was being ironic… First time.” — Bobby, explaining why he put the key to his golf cart on a Ferrari key chain

Your turn. What’s your favorite line from last night? What do you think of the Grayson/Laurie pairing? How should it play out?

I really enjoyed this episode and thought it helped connect you to the characters. I thought the break-up scene was well-done. Courteney Cox showed a lot of sublety, which was very impressive.

I really like this show! I’m glad they kept it for a second season. I’m a true fan of Scrubs so I’m ok with this as Bill Lawrence’s new project!

    • Liz

I’m glad that they kept this whole comedy block for a 2nd season. The Middle. Modern Family and Cougar Town are excellent comedies. I thought you couldn’t get better than How I Met Your Mother and the Big Bang Theory but ABC really upped the network comedy game this year.

      • Mothra

But to make it a complete comedy blockbuster night, the blockheads at ABC need to add Better Off Ted, dammit!

      • ihatescreennames

Mothra, I’m with you–ABC needs to add Better Off Ted to Wednesday nights!!!!

      • Chris

i whole heartedly agree with mothra and ihatescreennames… how do we make it happen?

      • Bobby’s Robot

        I’m with you guys!

      • Nicole

Yes – this needs to happen. (In truth, I’d be happy to have Scrubs in the mix too, with The Middle somewhere else – I’ve never seen The Middle, but I’m so not a Patricia Heaton fan).

      • Tahnee

BOT would so flourish if it was moved to the comedy block. Everybody who watches it loves it but it got no promotion so whenever I mention it nobody has even heard of it.

I like this show now. I think it found its ground and the characters developed pretty fast.

I could see where they were going with it, but I was still disappointed in the Laurie/Grayson kiss. I hope in the next episode they show the end of the embrace and Grayson pulls away, realizing he was about to do EXACTLY what he told Laurie not to do (i.e. have revenge sex with one of Smith’s friends). The cast is so good together, I don’t want to see that dynamic blown up this soon by a Laurie/Grayson hookup.

    • kiki

      I totally agree!

    • Renee

Exactly! I really don’t understand why Grayson sent Travis to save Laurie, just so he could sleep with her instead. It’s a shame. Seems like they were setting him up to be a good guy, but then he does that stupid f-ed up thing. It makes no sense whatsoever. It’s just a plot twist for the sake of a plot twist.

  • PNK

Very funny! This and “Men of a Certain Age” are my shows, esp. since Breaking Bad and Damages are nowhere to be found.
Yay Courtney for your Golden Globe nom!!

  • Kate

I like this show a lot more, especially as it is becoming less one liners, I appreciate Ellie’s perception (because, come on, from what I have gathered, she is a well educated woman who probably was a successful career woman and now is a stay at home mother, of course she over pays attention to everything going on – I do hope Andy tells Ellie about the kiss, it would wrap up that storyline pretty quickly). I did like what they were trying to do, the guys’ conversation about relationships and the break down of Jules and Jeff. I bet that is not the last we have seen of Jeff – Jeff summed up where Jules really is, not a cougar (that is Barb), but after twenty years of marriage, finally enjoying her independence. A guy like Jeff (or heck, like Grayson – who is too messed up himself right now) respects that.

    • Bilbo

Nice comments, I agree – I wasn’t blown away with this show at first, but they are really starting to nail their characterizations & humor, great episode last night!

      • kiki

Ditto! This episode had me laughing… I think I am starting to like this show more than Modern Family… Gotta give The Middle a shot, I hear good things.

  • ragu

My favorite new show of the year! It has the best lines

  • melissa

andy used to really get on my nerves, but during the last couple episodes, i’ve started to actually like him. his training of travis last week was great, and his reaction last night to seeing laurie & grayson was so real.

  • Lisa

this show is just SO good. it is my favorite too, ragu. i look so forward to it. (sad life i lead)

  • the funniest thing to me was when jules said something about how her and ellie should kill andy and then get married. that ending scene with the shovel and “YOU RUIN EVERYTHING!1!!” made me die laughing.

    • amj

      Yes, extremely funny!

  • ADbntly

You know when a sitcom is good is when you start to LOL without the helping of a laughing soundtrack.
    I love this show.

  • PNK

More Travis too! He needs to hang with some kids a bit more tho’ or it will reek a bit, a kid his age would not hang out this much with the ‘dults. I do love some of his surprise interactions with Jules’ latest boy-toys, those scenes are hilarious.

    • Renee

      Absolutely! I love Travis! :)

  • Katie G

I find the men on this show hysterical, and the best part. Andy is my favourite

  • graeme

Another great episode. This show is on a roll.
You missed the line about “when I was in grade school, the nuns told me if I kissed 2 boys in the same day, their saliva would mix together in my mouth and I would die”. something like that.

  • Jay

Mandi, I totally agree with your first paragraph. I found myself laughing hard through so many moments in last night’s episode! I love this show and really hope it maintains viewership for many seasons to come. Andy cracks me up!! His bit about the volcano in his chest… priceless.
