'Twilight'-hater Miley Cyrus wants us to be nice. Can we do it?

Miley Cyrus — reportedly the only teenager in America who doesn’t give a rip about Twilight – is on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar this month, and uses the accompanying interview to speak her mind about the negative press she’s been getting for what seems like a thousand years but has really only been since about the same time she took off the blond Hannah Montana wig. ”My job is to be a role model, and that’s what I want to do, but my job isn’t to be a parent,” she tells Harper’s. “My job isn’t to tell your kids how to act or how not to act, because I’m still figuring that out for myself. So to take that away from me is a bit selfish. Your kids are going to make mistakes whether I do or not. That’s just life.”

I think sensible people can agree that she makes a good point. But what about the following, in which she criticizes all the clutched-pearls hysteria surrounding her “racy” Annie Leibovitz photo shoot for Vanity Fair? “Here my parents are thinking they’re seeing a beautiful photograph by a major photographer, and the people of America want to see something dirty in that?” she says. “It doesn’t make sense to us because [my family] doesn’t look for negativity. But people don’t want to say ‘What a great performance’ or ‘What a great shot.”No one wants to look at something like that and see the positive because it doesn’t sell a magazine.”

I’ve gotta give it to her: If I’d titled this post “Miley Cyrus is pretty and seems like she’d be fun to hang out with,” you probably wouldn’t have clicked on it. General negativity — whether it’s snarky commentary (oops), quotes taken out of context, or blowing a non-event way out of proportion — does seem to be the way of the world, even more so in these instamatic, blogtastic times. But because I like Miley, and I really like “Party in the USA,” below, which I have been playing on repeat while writing this blog post, I am going to try and be a little nicer to her for the rest of the afternoon. Because she is pretty. And she seems like she’d be fun to hang out with. God this is boring. What do you think, PopWatchers?

We want a good girl, someone we would want our daughters to emulate yet we get one and all papers, magus, etc., do is try to find something bad. This is a really sad commentary on America’s intelligence. Yeah, she’s pretty, talented, and I’d like my daughter and me to hang with her.

      hahaha
      wut intelligence?
America possesses very little of that. well 95% of the population @least.

    • sara

ummm, sorry to break it to you but Miley Cyrus is a ho. If you want your kids to emulate her then you better be prepared to be grandma. and soon.

  • Leslie

I agree.. I guess. I’m 15, and sometimes see Miley as if shes trying TO HARD to grow up TO FAST. I dont have a nose ring, or a tatto, or wear the things she wears in her video, but I guess thats how she wants to be, and thats on her. I respect her, in some werid way, for standing up for herself. And I do plan on seeing the Last Song. But not because she’s in it, but because her boyfriend is hot.. Hahaha. lame

  • Snarf

Spare the snark, spoil the celebrity!
Just kidding. The kid makes some valid points.

Awww, Whitney. She would like you too and hang out! Nice article – many of which I have enjoyed ever since I saw a book recommendation by you for one of your friends – and it was a funny good book too. (So thanks!) Nodding my head like yeah…

um…. Taylor Swift is known as a great role model, esp next to miley. and only good reports are said about taylor swift, people love her so thye click to read about her when its good or bad, it never has to be bad, thats the point. whatver i think Taylor is awsome. ps i love that the catagories are listed- birchery and kids corner!!!

    • Nick T

Taylor is boring and too sweet. id rather hang out wit Miley. she makes more addictive music and doesn’t make sure that everyone knows exactly how perfect she is. plus she can tell me about the best tattoo parlors. i think she gave great responses to those questions.

“…reportedly the only teenager in America who doesn’t give a rip about Twilight…”

I may have to start liking her now. lol

    • jmo

      Amen to that sista!

  • Em

I don’t understand why everyone has this huge grudge against her. America needs to realize that she’s a freaking teenager and they’re wasting their energy by bashing her. I think she’s cute and seems like a pretty cool kid. And if you don’t like her, you might want to rethink your life and why you hate someone you don’t even know…and a teenager at that! Go Miley!

    • kritika

miley iz teenager nd will enjoy her life in her way . children are nt forced to intimate her . let her enjoy her life. as we do

  • Jessica

I thought after the Vanity Fair pics came out her people were saying that she had been taken advantage of.

    • GK

*Exactly* Em. At the time Cyrus said to People, “I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs, I feel so embarrassed.” She also pronounced them a “mistake,” and “inappropriate.” I already knew she was a bible-whacking hypocrite, but now she’s been exposed as a opportunistic media whore liar as well. “Role model” my butt.

      • ForAnAngel

She apologized for those pics at the time because she was forced to. But people really did make a big deal out of nothing.

  • Madd

I’m not her biggest fan by any means. But I don’t get people saying celebrities are role models. Britney Spears wasn’t a role model for me as a kid just because she was famous.

  • Tina

I’m not expecting her to be a role model… just have some talent.

  • peter

You realize that song is terrible, right? Like really awful. Unspeakably horrendous. It makes me want to go back in time and kill my parents so that I don’t have to be born and come into contact with that song

    • GK

While you’re back there, can you whack my ‘rents too, so I don’t have to ever hear it either? This song is what finally convinced my 8-year-old daughter that Miley Cyrus cannot, in fact, sing. For me, that caterwauling hot mess “The Climb” was more than convincing enough, but my daughter just wasn’t sold. Eh, I’ll take it where I can get it, I guess.

      • peter

I would get right on it but that song is so bad I went ahead and killed myself instead of waiting for someone to invent the time machine. And yes they do have the internet in hell.

Hmmm, Miley actually makes sense, I always assumed there wasn’t much in that head of hers, but I’m glad to know that I’m wrong (at least for the most part). She’s right, celebrities aren’t supposed to raise the public’s children, and as human beings, they will make mistakes as well. The thing is, being in the limelight means their mistakes will be magnified and make them perfect targets for scrutiny. But Miley is still a kid, and she needs to make mistakes in order to grow up. It is selfish and unrealistic to expect her to be perfect. Parents need to get a grip and be the primary role models in their children’s lives. Relying on celebrities to teach your kids morals and values will undoubtedly backfire big time. And role models make mistakes too (i.e. parents), being a positive role model doesn’t mean being devoid of flaws.

    • Tucson

I can see how parents can justify holding Miley to a higher standard. She’s a very rich little girl, courtesy of their wallets. They pay her salary.

  • CaliGirl

Sorry, can’t stand her. She is so full of herself and self-righteous. She wants less negativity? Maybe she should stop spewing so much of it out herself.

    • EdgarlyFriend

And there’s my issue with her, and ‘celebs’ of her ilk. Frankly, Miley has brought herself more grief than Britney ever invited on herself, and that’s saying something. I think I’ve read four articles about her in the last few months, all w/negative titles based on her negative comments. Whatever she doesn’t like (or doesn’t have the stomach for) she preaches that others should stop too (Twitter, Twilight, etc). If she wants to stop being seen as a role model, maybe she should stop spouting personal opinions as if they are pearls of wisdom.

  • duffy

this is all just prep for miley to slut it up, because she is “growing up” and tyring to become a edgy artist.
also, as a fashion lover, and a adult,it irritates me to no end to see her on harpers bazaar. she has nothing to do with fashion!

  • Ashley

I agree that miley should be a role model for younger girls to look up to, but she is 17 years old. She is a teenager! Having a tattoo and a nose ring isn’t a big deal. I’m 17 years old also, and I don’t look up to Miley or copy her descions I make my own. Miley says she isn’t a parent and she is 100 percent correct! Maybe the moms blaming Miley for being a “bad role model” should look at how they are raising their own children. They should be the ones that they want their children to look up to! I know that when I was little, I looked up to my mom because she was the only one I had. & I still look up to her. So don’t blame Miley for being a typical teenage girl & living her life. She’s no different from any other teen girl, she’s just under the spotlight.
