Thank goodness that despite all the suckage 2009 has wrought, one thing remains dependable in this godforsaken world: Cable marathons on Christmas. Yes, the holidays once again bring us the greatest gift of all, hit after hit of addictive movies to watch instead of actually sharing the spirit of the season with other human beings.
The beauty of the movie marathon is that you don’t even have to look at a schedule to know when you have to turn on the TV to catch the likes of A Christmas Story and Night at the Museum — because they’ll be playing on endless loop on TBS and FX respectively. (Though the true beauty of the movie marathon actually goes beyond that — it means you can watch A Christmas Story over and over throughout the day. You know you want to.) Fox Movie Channel will run Home Alone; AMC will repeat National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation; Spike TV’s got Bad Santa.
As for TV show marathons, A&E will help to make the season bright with, um, Criminal Minds. MTV — the master of the guilty-pleasure vortex — will suck viewers in with Parental Control and Teen Mom. VH1 and CNBC, meanwhile, will induce seasonally appropriate guilt with Celebrity Fit Club and ‘Til Debt Do Us Part.
So, PopWatchers, which of these marathons will you be unwrapping for Christmas Day?

I will be emjoying National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation… love that movie.
Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation are good, but what crap choices for TV shows… What happened to the days when, on any holiday (not just Xmas), you could get marathons of good TV shows? Stuff like the Star Treks, for instance? It’s like no one’s showing any of those anymore. Sci-Fi (oh, excuse me… “SyFy”) still puts the occasional Twilight Zone marathon at least. A Lost marathon would be sweet. It’s OK though, since I actually WILL be spending time with my family! Still, if I stumble across a Monty Python or Monk marathon, I might stop and watch a little.
A Christmas Story, natch.
USA is repeating Elf!
I might watch A Christmas Story once or twice, but I’m a sucker for Elf.
None of them. I’ll be watching the Mythbusters marathon.
I think today, Christmas Eve, on of the channels is doing a “White Christmas” marathon. I think AMC… I also like to check out “A Christmas Story” because even watching it in fits and starts is still brilliant fun.
Why aren’t there marathons of good shows? Both Mad Men and Breaking Bad could all be done in a weekend (the latter in a day). Heck, you could even do every episode of Lost if you shortened all the commercials or took out any scene with Paulo and Nikki.
* Over the course of a weekend that is.
it wouldnt be christmas if i didnt see A Christman Story from end to beginning to middle about 3 times at various hours
A Criminal Minds marathon was my Christmas wish before I even saw this post. My wish has come true–I will be clearing my schedule to spend the day with Matthew Gray Gubler and Shemar Moore!!
Reid is the man!!!
Star Wars Trilogy on Spike. Did watch the West Wing mini-marathon this morning.
I’ll jump around a bit, but my number one stop is Criminal Minds and of course I’ll need at least one if not two or three views of Ralphie.
