Diane Sawyer's 'ABC's World News' debut: Who's watching?

Filed under: News, Television and tagged:

Diane Sawyer’s tenure as anchor of ABC’s World News begins tonight at 6:30 ET. The former Good Morning America co-host has an exclusive interview with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad about three American hikers who accidentally crossed into Iranian territory and whether Iran has been testing a neutron initiator. You can watch part of the interview, as well as a snippet of Sawyer’s appearance on today’s GMA in which she and Robin are so excited to see each other that they clasp hands for a bit, at ABC.com. Diane’s also hosting a web-only series called The Conversation. In today’s, she and John Karl talk health care and Diane is wearing a hoodie!

Planning on tuning in? And if you already have, what did you think of Diane’s first show?

I thought the hand-clasp was cute. With Robin going through her fight with cancer, Diane was there through it all. One thing I’ll miss about GMA was the friendship you saw on camera every morning. Sure, I’ll watch but I’ll miss Charlie’s “and I hope you had a good day” sign-off.

Watched tonight. Was happy she signed off like Charlie as an homage. Regardless of the negative comments below, the lady has class.

I’ll definitely be watching. ABC World News has always been my favorite, and I’m looking forward to seeing what Diane does with the broadcast.

    Not Me!!!!!!!!!

Diane Sawyer is a real ignorant “journalist”. She’s basically a eating the big one every night just to keep her “job”.

    • ger

      Your middle name is fitting.

  • Tucker

I don’t give a flip about this so called journalist. She is unprofessional, and sells lies just like most of them.

  • Marty G

I definately won’t. We used to watch every night and loved Charlie Gibson.
She always comes across as a snob.
Katie’s looking better and better.Of course Brian Williams is # 1.

    • Jennifer

I bet she can spell “definitely.”

      • GGG

        Ha ha. Hilarious!

Go Diane. Clearly the best news interviewer on tv. (Oprah does not do
    news interviews.)

  • Alisha

I miss Diane on GMA! It just isn’t the same. I look forward to seeing what she will do on the nightly news.

    • occ

I’m with you! I really miss her as well.

  • Lili

Am not a regular for world news but I will watch for her first time

  • Debra

I’m watching now and I am very satisfied. I knew I would be b/c Diane has a sincerity that is inviting. Wish you could clone her to do both shows.

  • Ralph

I think that she is doing a credible job. The interview with the Iranian dictator was fair. She stumbled a couple of times and was a bit more annimated than she had to be, but overall ok.

    • Marie

Women bring passion and drama to life but when it comes to news, I like to have less drama and more serious conversation. Otherwise I watch Katie! I am a woman and a feminist but a serious professional one as well. Diane should cut the fake raised eyebrows and squeezed corner eyes, stop mispronouncing the name of the Iranian president, she is supposed to be a real pro, she even visited the country for shown in a segment and made several interviews there, didn’t she learn the name of their president. Unless she cleans her act real quick, ABC will lose viewers fast!

      • Jennifer

I think Couric should lay off the plastic surgery. I guess that is MY feminist opinion. Can she even raise her eyebrows or squint her eyes at this point? Also, Sawyer properly pronounces Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s name.

    • Diane

I agree with both Ralph and Marie -and this has nothing to do with Sawyer being a woman. I’d rather have Elizabeth Vargas taken Charlie’s place – she is the kind of “professional” I want to watch every night, like Charlie and Peter. Sawyer is too animated, showy and insincere.

      • Cheryl2

I thought the exact same thing! I loved Elizabeth Vargas, Sawyer appeared to try too hard.

  • Tom Tomashek

I thought she was poised and polished, as usual, seemingly quickly comfortable with her new role. As much as I respect Katie, I believe Sawyer is stronger at delivering the news. She won’t steal any viewers from Brian Williams, but might pick up a tidy bunch of CBS viewers.

diane..lovely, bright and every bit a pro at any job she does..we missed charlie so mauch on gma when he moved on and will miss him very much now..diane will do well..her closing tonight was excellent..how can you not wish her well?? it’s the NEWS for crying out loud

  • Ted

Diane, we hardly knew ye. Her evening debut was ruined by her fawning over the murderous Iranian dictator. With this kind of ABC idiocy, we can assume Diane is so sorry Hitler, Tojo and Stalin aren’t around anymore, so she could make goo-goo eyes at them and try to build her ratings. This could be equivalent to Jane Fonda going over to North Vietnam and fawning over gunners who shot down U.S. aircraft.

    • Patti

Give me a break – if it were a MAN doing the interview, your comments would be different. What’s your problem — can’t handle a woman doing what you perceive to be a man’s job!

      • Marie

Ted is right, she is a fake! she couldn’t even say his name right! and the tough act, throwing the papers to him to read! yep, he was going to read them right then and make a huge apology to the world for being an ignorant man! and thank her for the way she opened his eyes to reality!!! There is no competition b/w men and women here, she is not right for the world news materials.

    • Beth

You’re a pig! Marie, you’re also an idiot! I think you both need to relax!!! OMG! I love Katie Couric! Diane Sawyer raises her eyebrows!! She is not professional! How dare she interview Ahmadinejad!!! Exclamation points show I’m serious!!1!

  • Betty Duke

I feel it is unfair to judge Diane on just one program. She is taking over a position held by a man well respected.Just as she proved herself over the years at GMA,I will watch and give her a chance to gain my respect as she did on GMA

    • Jake

People also seem to forget – or just don’t realize – that before she was assigned to GMA, Diane Sawyer was a correspondent and reported what we are calling hard news.
