whatever. i love adam. enough said.
He seems very open and mature, and OUT comes off petty and childish. As much as I would have wanted him to be less coy during his Idol stint (i.e. keeping things gender neutral) the fact that he is gay and famous does not make him a gay rights poster boy, and he is not betraying his follow gays by not using AI as a platform for anything other than his music career. As apolitical as it seems, his insistence that being gay shouldn’t matter is something OUT should applaud – he’s saying we’re just like everybody else, which is the entire point of gay rights, is it not? As a gay person I’m tired of us homos being seen as some monolithic entity, and I’m glad Adam Lambert is saying it too. He is not a spokesgay – he is singer who is gay.
Wait — Who’s the token “straight woman” on the cover, and how does she feel about being a token?
Cyndi Lauper. And she’s very gay-supportive.
Everyone seems to know exactly what Adam’s publicist meant by “too gay” or “gay-gay” and feels that those descriptions are inherently offensive and homophobic. I read something very different into that language. I think the suggestion to not make the interview “too gay” was excellent business advice – evidence that this person is very good at his/her job. Um, Adam Lambert is plenty gay and definitely out – he is who he is, and no one can make him any gayer or straighter than he chooses. The article, however, could have been “too gay” if it read as an “inside joke”, not interesting or accessible to anyone outside the “community”. OUT is a very successful magazine – among LGBT people. I don’t believe it has a large non-LGBT readership. This interview provided an opportunity to sell a LOT of OUT magazines to a significant segment of the population who hadn’t previously been buying them. The thing is, people (gay and straight) who choose to read an interview with Adam Lambert may want to learn just about anything about him – about his music, his impressions about his new celebrity, his likes and dislikes, his family history, maybe his social and political views, and, oh yeah, his experiences as a young gay person. All the publicist was saying is, “look, I know OUT is a LGBT publication, but you can help get this fabulous, out, gay artist a wider audience and, in turn, he’s able to do the same for you. Let’s get the whole world excited about this man. We’ll sell records, you’ll sell magazines, and his success will open a lot of minds.” The publicist wasn’t saying don’t make readers uncomfortable with Adam’s gayness (that ship has sailed), s/he was saying don’t give them an article of gay people/by gay people/for gay people/about gay issues. That’s too gay; that would be gay-gay, and that will limit the reach of this amazing story.
Everytime I see one of Adam’s “decked to the nines” cover photos, I have to LMAO. Adam – you not only tip the gay-entertainment-dress scales, you fall right off the table into the stratosphere!! You’re photos are an absolute riot, and I know you’re probably 99% serious about your outlandish dress (1% tongue in cheek) — and regardless of the percentages, I love ya. The Intellectual’s Soap Opera (General Hospital) continually plays Adam’s recording of “Mad World”. They’re not nuts. TRIPLE YAAAAY and HATS OFF to all entities who recognize great talent and voice.
It’s only a cover. Adam Lambert has been one of the most talked about people this year and he deserves to be on it. I think more people are into his new music than his sexuality. The editor doesn’t understand what he’s talking about. If he’s so ticked off by Adam’s publicist and interview then why did he put Adam on the cover? It just comes off as ridiculous with his comments.
I think its important for gay musicians/actors/celebrities to be very candid about their sexual orientation. While I am of the “being gay is only a small part of who I am” camp, it goes without saying that being a gay icon carries a huge amount of responsibility—yes, even politically. It surprises me that Adam wouldn’t want to discuss the march on Washington D.C. or anything “political.” Clearly, he holds a lot of clout now in America, and he should understand that he has the potential to change a lot of minds. With that said, it sounded to me more like he was completely ignorant of the entire political process and that was why he didn’t want to answer questions in regards to the politicization of civil rights. It doesn’t surprise me though–in today’s celebrity culture, why pick up a paper or read a book? I suppose Adam is apart of that bubble-gum, dumber-than-dirt culture. Too bad.
Oh, for f**k’s sake, the man is a singer! Not a GAY SINGER, not a politician and not here to pave anyone’s way. He’s here to sing and entertain us, two things he does unbelievably well. The fact that we are treated to any part of his personal life is thanks to his love for his fans and his incredible generosity with himself. I, personally, couldn’t care less if he were doing the entire NY Jets and Dallas Cowboys teams at the same time, as long as he continues to sing and entertain. Which he will continue to do if you all stop concentrating on the man’s sexual orientation, which is none of anyone’s business. His fans should just stop contributing to the commentary on this stuff. Adam doesn’t need our defense. He’ll be fine on his own. He’s articulate and can defend himself very well, thank you.
One thing that I agree with Adam is that not all gays are about the gay activist or march whatever. Many live normal lives and work hard for their money (yeah I’m a fan of KRIS!!!) But then again, def not many gays wear eyeliners and look like he does. If he’s SO OUT there, then he should take the responsibility for being OUT THERE. He just can’t choose whatever convenient for HIM, that’s selfish. So, before we come undone, bring it back & let it rain … LIVE LIKE WE’RE KRIS !!!
Up until a few moments ago, I considered myself to be one of Adam Lambert’s Number #1 Fans. I’m a little disillusioned after tonight’s fiasco. To THINK I patiently suffered through three boring hours of the AMA Awards Show — even Jaylo’s fall and recovery from the platform was executed better — just to see and record Adam’s TV debut. Instead of seeing his real greatness or even his great ability to entertain, what I witnessed instead was a COMPLETE ABORTIVE MESS. The dancing was crap, the two crotch grabs were tasteless, Adam’s outfit (a silver pencil pointed suit) looked cheesy and stupid, and Adam’s face, contorted and sweaty, looked like a jar of ugly white paste warmed over too many times. And oh yeah, the lyrics and the melody of the song sucked big time. D—M, Adam had a gigantic opportunity tonight and HE BLEW IT so big time even I cannot believe it. He left the audience way less than luke warm, completely evident by their disappointed reaction of either silence or half-clapping. I wouldn’t have believed this could even be possible, given Adam’s talent. Where in God’s name were his ADVISORS, or did Adam just go off half cocked? In any case, what was done was to completely waste an incredible opportunity to launch a career. In a word, the whole effort was extremely INFERIOR AND BORING (the only highlight to the debacle was his last vocal aria). Other than that – EL STINKO. Please, God, tell me that this did not happen.
Michael, for the 1,000th time I absolutely love you. You said articulately everything I was angrily rambling about in my head. Even I, someone mainly ignorant about the entertainment industry was aware of the fact that AI contestants aren’t allowed interviews/cover shoots alone during the competition, so how on earth is is possible that the Editor of a national publication didn’t know that fact?? And the whole “don’t mess this thing up” part??? So infuriating, but you hit the nail on the head, as usual, so I will just end this with a SLEZAK RULES
Agree with you 100% Michael. How incredibly catty and backstabbing to whine so publicly AFTER getting an hour interview and cover shot with him.
LOL!!!!
Sooo funny!!!! This even make Adam more popular!!!! “OUT” you even promote him, do you realize it????LOL,LOL!!!!
Adam Lambert is gay, but not gay enough for “Out” magazine,
too gay to win American Idol,
to sexual for children watching AMA with their responsible parents,
and too who the hell knows what fot the causes of the gay community?
Whatya Want From Him????!!!!!!!!
Adam’s performance at the AMAs was a brilliant STFU to the staff at OUT magazine.
