I have a weakness for grieving men on TV — you experience the vulnerability without having to deal with the palpable pain. Hence me finding Damon Salvatore extremely attractive in this episode. Definitely his best hour to date, and he didn’t even murder anyone (though, of course, he tried to).
Rather than give a chronological play-by-play, let’s examine it story line-by story line.
Damon’s diabolic plan: The show did a nice fake out making us think since the pilot that Damon just wanted to make Stefan’s life miserable. After Elena told Stefan that Damon was terrorizing Bonnie so she’d give back the crystal, Stefan was determined to find out what his brother was really plotting. The first step of his plan was to continue the “I’m pretending I’m you” game the boys started in the beginning of the episode when Damon came to apologize to a gratuitously shirtless Stefan for killing his oldest friend last week. Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder played that bar scene perfectly, with hints of smiles that made you wonder whether it was the actors or the characters enjoying each other’s impersonations of eyebrow acting and forehead brooding. (Both probably.)
Next came Stefan kicking Damon’s ass in darts and showing him just frustrating it is to spend time wondering what game someone is playing. Then it was time for a sentimental tossing of the football and a heart-to-heart on the field. Stefan said their love for Katherine wasn’t real, she compelled them. Damon didn’t want to go there and started walking away — until Stefan asked about the crystal. The exchange that followed was another one of those rare moments when Stefan steals a scene from his brother:
Damon: How did you know it was Katherine’s? Emily [Bonnie's ancestor, who was also Katherine's handmaiden] gave it to her on her last night. I was with her, and you [smug look] weren’t.
Stefan: I was the last one to see her, Damon.
Damon: [Looks genuinely hurt]
Stefan: Now, what do you want with Katherine’s crystal?
Damon: [Recovering] She didn’t tell you?
Stefan: We had other things on our mind. [HOT!]
Damon: [Now in Stefan's face] I could rip your heart out and not think twice about it.
Stefan: Yeah, I’ve heard that before.
Damon: I have a bigger surprise, Stefan. [Cue eyebrow acting] I’m gonna bring her back. [Evil smile.]
As Damon later explained, he’d asked Emily to use her magic to protect Katherine, and, with that crystal powered by a comet (okay, sure, why not), she sealed Katherine in a mystical holding cell in a tomb underneath the church the townsfolk thought they’d burned her and other vampires in. Damon had to wait for the comet to return to juice the crystal, and then he could free Katherine. In exchange, he promised Emily that her lineage would survive — a vow he was still keeping by not killing Bonnie to get his crystal. Am I surprised that Damon is a man of his word? Yes, pleasantly — it adds a layer to the character.
The only problem I had with the episode was that Stefan, who’s usually so cautious around Damon, forgot that his brother has superhearing. Stefan really should have had Elena text where Emily-possessed Bonnie said she was heading to destroy the crystal. Damon, of course, overheard Elena on Stefan’s cell, and was at the ruins of the old church to meet Emily. Love that she was powerful enough to send Damon flying and impale him on a tree. Stefan showed up in time to free Damon and hear from Emily that it was “them” that Damon wanted to free. She had to save all 27 vampires in the church to save one that night. She couldn’t keep her promise to Damon; the current townsfolk didn’t need to see that kind of evil unleashed. Stefan didn’t believe that Damon was doing this out of love, he thought it was just for revenge on the town. Here’s what I think: Damon was telling the truth when he said he only cared about rescuing Katherine. It’s just that if saving her meant that 26 other vampires would get to feed on people he believed would try to hunt them if they knew vampires existed, that was okay with him.
Emily succeeded in destroying the crystal, and when the flames surrounding her went out, Damon attacked Bonnie. Stefan saved her by giving her his blood. I find it interesting the way that Damon just stayed there, without Elena or Stefan protesting. Maybe a small part of them couldn’t blame him for being overcome with anger when his last chance (?) to see Katherine again was taken away from him. Damon’s grief was believable in his next scene. He told Stefan that Katherine never compelled him, he knew everything. “It was real for me,” he said. Then choking back tears added, “I’ll leave now.” It’s my favorite Damon moment of the series, and he wasn’t even shirtless or being a bitch. Shout-out to the director or whoever decided to shoot Damon’s dialogue through the trees. Every time the camera emerged from behind a trunk to show his devastated, defeated face, it cut into you a little deeper. Were I to actually believe that Damon would leave town, I would be weeping. I’m looking forward to seeing what this means for the brothers’ relationship…
• Stefan and Elena’s romance: After seeing that Stefan could save a life, not just take one, Elena realized that she could handle being in a relationship with him. Stefan, however, hadn’t changed his mind — there’s been too much drama for him to stay in Elena’s life. Coming back to town was a mistake, he said, before walking away as she begged him not to. Elena told Stefan that she was going to tell Bonnie the truth about what had happened to her with Damon and Stefan. Seeing the two girls crying and hugging in the end montage, you have to think those tears were for Elena losing yet another person she loved. If Stefan and Elena’s makeout scene in the promo for next week’s episode is a dream sequence, I will murder someone. Not because I’m against the writers finding more ways to keep them apart, but because I hate manipulative promos.
• Alaric Saltzman: Matthew Davis (What About Brian?, Blue Crush) made his first appearance as the new history teacher. We’re allowed to just call him Ric. I’m sure his ancestry is important since he took the time to bore his class by detailing it, but I can’t be bothered to type it out. Presumably, he’s a vampire, which we know by the ring he wears and the way he hesitated after walking Aunt Jenna to her door after meeting her at that one teen-friendly bar/restaurant everyone in town frequents every night. If he’s telling the truth, his wife was killed in North Carolina, and I’m guessing he’s tracked the killer (Damon? Logan?) to Mystic Falls. I’m sure he had an ulterior motive for giving Jeremy an extra credit paper on “local history,” especially since Jeremy’s late father just happened to have a passion for it. What do you think he’s up to? (SPOILER ALERT: I’ve read an interview that implies he’s some sort of slayer.) Do you think that Matthew Davis can pull off a vampire? He doesn’t scream intrigue to me, but I’m willing to give him a chance while I secretly hold out hope that he’s a human who loved a vampire, and it’s her ring he wears. I suppose Aunt Jenna being used by Ric will give her another excuse to be out of the house and clueless to things such as the fact that Elena’s manicure night turned into a séance that started off lame (Bonnie suddenly wanted to see spooky Emily?), but ended up sufficiently scary (awesome shot of Emily in the mirror as possessed Bonnie walked out of the bathroom).
• Caroline and Matt: Do I miss Caroline being Damon’s snackfood? Yes. But if she and Matt actually manage to have a sweet relationship (read: take things slow, continue spending time in bed eating junk food) instead of a codependent mess, I am all for this coupling. Matt saying he was creeped out by the cuddling they did last week — because he doesn’t like her — reminded me of the love-hate relationship Xander and Cordelia had on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That’s another case of a nice, lonely guy and a bitch that isn’t entirely without a heart making it work. It could provide some levity to the show… until the day Matt finds out that Damon has not only chowed down on Caroline but also essentially killed his sister.
• Logan: He returned. As a vampire. How? We know from Stefan that in order to become a vampire, you have to die with a vampire’s blood in you. Who turned him? Does anyone really care about Logan? I kinda don’t. But if the actor surprises me and goes balls to the wall during Logan’s killing spree next week, I’ll reconsider.
So, what did you think of the episode? Did you guess Damon’s plan? Are you ready for Elena and Stefan to make up already, or would you like more foreplay? Are you psyched for Alaric’s arrival and Logan’s return? Do you endorse Caroline and Matt as a couple?

Vampire Diaries recaps

Okay last week I complained about the lack of the hot vampire sex…now the promo for next week hint at a Stefan-Elena hook up. I hope it happens. the last hot hook up on network T.v was Meredith and Shepard in the season two finale of Greys when Denny died.
Having said that It seems unlikely that this was all there was to Damons plan and I doubt he will go away quietly. he’s the one who probably turned logan…another part of maybe a more sinister plan ( i hope they kill logan next week) And I think Saltzman is tied to Katherine who in the book was German and Slatzman at the begining of his first history class explained how he was of german decent.
@TheObserver–But, the series Alaric had no relation to Katherine. He was infact a phsyc student, studying the effects of vampire attacks on humans. It don’t think they will stretch it that far.
It’s hard to guess what’s going to happen because the storyline differs so much from the book. I think this episode (which I haven’t seen yet) sounds like it’s touching a little more on how Damon was in the books (which I prefer to the series, because it turned out all of the killing going on in town that he was blamed for was… actually not him at all, but Katherine); they’re showing he has another side to him and that he really, truly did love Katherine and she had him wrapped around her little finger. As for next week… I hope Stefan and Elena just hurry up and get back together; they’ve been dragging it on long enough. I’m not sure (yet) what I think about Caroline/Matt, since Bonnie was the one who canonly had a thing for him. (Then again, Bonnie was redheaded and descended from druids
and we’re still missing Meredith, Elena’s other BFF!) I’m hoping Alaric keeps his Vampire Slayer role from the books, it’d be too much of an odd change to have him be a vampire instead. I know, I know, I’m making a lot of series vs book comparisons. When viewed separately/on its own, the series really is amazing and I think they’re doing a great job. The actors are perfect for their roles.
You just totally gave away the ‘mystery’ of the book. Not everyone has read them, and now thanks to you, it’s kind of ruined for them. Thanks!
I love this show. Once again great episode. Definitely surprised by Logan’s vamp return so interested to see how this even happened. Alric’s lingering at the door waiting for an invite leads me to vampire but with this show you never know which is what I love. Damon who I wanted to punch when he attacked Bonnie but then I wanted to hug while he mourned in the woods for Katherine. Who would have ever thought that Damon was mostly motivated by love. Now that Bonnie’s part is over in the overall plan to thwart Katherine’s return will her character get shoved on the backburner and we get no more Jasmine Guy. I hope that doesn’t happen now that Elena has told her about Stefan.
Firstly, thank you to the director for hearing my plea for lingering shirtless moments. Swoon.
I want to believe that we saw the full extent of Damon’s plan because, at heart, I want him to be a good guy, but I don’t really want him to leave town.
The Bonnie story arc was kind of crammed into this episode, I hope she remains a viable character.
My response to the return of Logan was WTF!?! Not really happy about that and very concerned that it will be lame unless, by his participation in the secret society, he was angling to become a vampire the whole time. The promo made it look like he was having too much fun as a vamp.
I think that Ric will bring new intrigue and I am hoping that can stretch appropriately over a few episodes at least. New characters come and go so briefly, It would be nice to sip and savor rather than gulp. Which reminds me that my favorite line of the show was Stefan to Damon “find a new town to use as your personal gas and sip.”
I am looking forward to what Ric’s involvement in Jeremy’s life and education will produce for Jeremy’s character and I am completely on board with a sweet but slightly awkward hook-up between Matt and Caroline.
I second the motion for more gratuitious semi- nudity…i.e stefan and DAMON shirtless (i’m not opposed to below the waist nudity either)
If they don’t want to veer even further from the *books*, then Alaric is not a vampire. He’s actually a good guy. Anyway, It ocurred to me that he may be the human that was mated to Lexie, come to find out what happened to her, or in a wierd twist, he’s related to Logan ala Damon and Stefan. I think Jeremy will discover that they’re related to Catherine somehow, everyone seems to be linked in the tv version. Am I the only one that doesn’t miss Tyler? Love Ian as Damon. The first dream sequence felt very Nightmare on Elm Street, and the farewell in the forest between Stefan and Elena is what New Moon’s goodbye would probably look like if KStew knew how to act. Which she doesn’t!!Great episode!!!!
I just hope they unleash those 27 vampires. I think it could be awesome. Maybe in the season finale…?
I agree!! If Ric is a slayer maybe it will mean him fighting on the same side as Stephen (=Angel) and then Damon can be suckered in to help (=Spike the later years). That would be so much fun. I really love this show!
Such a great episode! Ian and Paul were great this episode. I thoroughly enjoyed both of their performances as well as their chemistry with each other.I am also glad to see more depth in Damon’s character. He can’t be ALL evil. I also can’t wait to find out more history between Katherine/Emily/Damon/Stefan. Next week’s episode (from what I saw of the promo that my DVR cut off- grrr) looks even better! I am hoping that the Elena/Stefan hook up isn’t a misleading promo trick though because I will be very angry. Overall, I am so excited about this show! I don’t think there has been a weak episode yet.
This show is a big guilty pleasure of mine that I expected nothing from but its really surprising me… pulling me in and hooking me. Damned tv.
Agreed! It has really exceeded my expectations and I always look forward to watching it.
Shirtless Stefan..play, rewind, pause, repeat. Loved the brothers role playing. You could totally see that they were having a ball portraying each other. We all knew Damon had a softer side. Love it that it comes in glimpses that leaves him mean enough to be interesting but not sappy enough to be boring. Loving the V-Diaries..
Great episode this week! Good thing too because I was just beginning to lose interest in this show.
Does anyone else see something maybe between Damon and bonnie? No? well I thought I did for a second and it could be interesting and keep bonnie front and center in the story as more than just the best friend who knows everything.
The Matt/Caroline thing is cute and I hope it developes into something more than 2 teens starved for attention and affection hooking up briefly.
could do without the Logan return. And Elana is tossing out so many mixed messages she could single-handidly run our government.
I hear you on the Bonnie/Damon thing. Its more in my head and wishful thinking at the moment I guess, but still…….Bonnie and Damon are my favourite characters (in a show full of great characters to be fair). Matt/Caroline – adorable. The episode was awesome and the show just gets better and better and….dare I say it…..much more interesting than the books! (Don’t hate me!!). Hope they keep Bonnie and her ancestry and Witchiness a major part of the Vamps storyline as the series progresses. Can’t wait to see what happen next with Logaon and Alaric and how it all mixes up.
I read somewhere that the new teacher ric is actually a shapeshifter or a person that can transform into other people. Therefor I believe logan is not back but it is essentially ric appearing as logan. just a thought….
I am in total agreement. I thought it was really strange that Logan appeared later on in the night after Ric’s “date” with Jenna. I don’t really see Damon being the one turning Logan, and it certainly wouldn’t have been Stefan. I’m also going with Ric being a vamp, given the old name and what not. Totally don’t believe that was his grandfather’s name.
I’m totally with you! When Logan appeared at the door I was certain it was Alaric (Ric). Interesting. I go the feeling Alaric wanted to be invited in with Jenna and when she didn’t offer because of Jeremy, it was interesting that Logan appeared and was invited in. But both Logan and Alaric did the vampire look around before being invited in. HHMMMM
I didn’t think the shapeshifter thing until you mentioned it but definitely thought Ric was a vamp with the ring and waiting to be invited in, and then Logan showing up and doing the same thing..hmmm, lot’s to think about. and something with the name Alaric, being a vampire fan from way way back usually it’s an anagram when they spell the name that way, although changing the letters around does not get me anywhere. and agree with the Elana/Stefan back and forth, getting tired of it.
if it was really logan, why would he need to be invited in? he already has been…
THANK YOU FOR THE SHIRTLESS PAUL WESLEY (STEFAN)!!!!
I love this show it just keeps getting better!!!
Agreed lee lee, glad it was an extended scene rather than something I had to pause to get the full effect! His abs are rediculous!!
I’m kinda over Elena being all annoyingly like a teenager that does nt know what she wants. This is just my guess but since she looks exactly like Katherine and I thought Nina plays the bitchy role of Katherine better than she does Elena, that Damon is going to be able to bring katherine back but use Elena’s body and Damon will get some loving for a while… Seriously how much fun would that be to watch…
What I don’t understand is why Damon gave the necklace to Caroline in the first place if it was so important? Otherwise, great episode. Greiving Damon is HOT! Is anyone else annoyed by Aunt Jenna? She just lets her 15 year old nephew WALK home when there’s murders going on so she hook up with some stranger? Nice.
Damon didn’t give the necklace to Caroline. She picked it up off the ground after Damon drank her vervain spiked blood after the Founder’s Party.
Are you sure? I thought I remembered Damon giving Caroline the necklace in her bedroom one day.
kates is right…damon didn’t give caroline the necklace…she found it on the ground right before Elena found her outside-right before she started to hyperventilate…
This was the best freaking episode so far!!!
