Woah: Everyone’s favorite paternal Twitter feed, S— My Dad Says, is being turned into a CBS sitcom. That…seems about right? This is already a CBS sitcom. There’s the Odd Couple-esque pairing, a built-in family appeal, and a character who says things like “Sometimes life leaves a hundred dollar bill on your dresser, and you don’t realize until later that it’s because it f—ed you,” which is both wise and hilarious.
The leap from Twitter to TV’s a big one, but if there’s any feed that’s right for it, it’s SMDS. The logline writes itself: “Dotcom humorist turned ladmag writer moves back home to get away from city life; reconnects with foul-mouthed dad.” Tada! (SMDS writer Justin Halpern founded the site Holy Taco back in the day, and now he writes for Maxim, according to the LA Times.) It seems like a natural fit to me — doesn’t every sitcom wring humor from the parent/child dynamic?
Count me in, PopWatchers. Would you watch a show based on Shizz My Dad Says?

Considering Hollywood has been mining bloggers for story ideas (Confessions of a Shopaholic, Julie and Julia), it makes sense that television would turn to Twitter.
If you haven’t read this blog, you need to…it’s worth your time. I don’t see how they can do a series of this on CBS…maybe FX or HBO…just too crude. Cleaning it up would probably ruin it. Not dirty, just crude and very funny.
Confessions of a Shopaholic is actually a book and not a blog.
It was a blog that turned into a book that turned into a movie.
It’s a sitcom.
It could be sort of an All in the Family sort of show I guess. Who knows, done right, it could be hilarious. They will prob ruin it though.
I would, but… I’m not entirely sure how it can be nearly as hilarious without the profanity. That’s part of the appeal, for me at least.
good point
I totally agree. Water that down and it’s just a grumpy old man … and Peter Boyle did that on Raymond for years.
I think it would need to be a single-camera series with bleeps over the language. CBS doesn’t actually have any single-cam shows, so it could be a weird, edgy addition to their line-up.
I would definitely watch it, that stuff is hilarious!
Margaret, you have my eternal gratitude for linking to that Twitter feed. Funniest damn thing I’ve ever read.
As for a TV series based on it? Uh, no. They’ll ruin it. Now, IF (note the BIG IF) they developed a show that was worthy in and of itself, then included a CHARACTER based on S–t My Dad Says, then I’d be watching it. But the character would have to be in addition to a show that could stand on it own without relying on that single concept.
Two questions! If there was a remake of Sanford and Son (ideal cast) would you check it out? Second! If there was a movie with Tyler Perry’s Madea vs. Fred G. Sanford, would that also be a must see? Tribute to Redd Foxx 70’s sitcom Sanford and Son.

A wise, outspoken curmudgeon. TV sitcoms are full of these characters. In and of itself, this is a gimmick and is not what would make the sitcome work. It’ll take talented actors and writers. But that is ultimately true of all successful sitcoms.
Love the Twitter feed but didn’t Carol O’Connor pass away? That’s whose voice I hear when I read the posts. As long as they don’t get Jerry Stiller, it should be a good show.
