'Gossip Girl' threesome: Will you watch tonight?

Tonight is the much-hyped threesome episode of Gossip Girl and I’m totally tuning in for all the menage a trois action (I sorta have to because I write the recap but I would anyways!). All of this controversy over the threesome, though, is a little ridiculous. First of all, GG has always pushed boundaries so this doesn’t really feel like anything new (Remember the uproar over the network’s “OMFG” ads for the series?). Second, most of the characters on the show are now college-age and I think we all did some crazy things at that time in our lives (I use to wear tie-dye and bandannas—terrifying!). And finally, it’s not like GG is the first piece of pop culture to rock a threesome for shock value. Look at Woody Allen’s Vicky Christina Barcelona. Or Britney Spears new hit song “3.” Some might even say boy-girl-boy and/or girl-boy-girl is a desperate ploy for attention, but it doesn’t seem that far out of GG’s oeuvre. Remember last year when Jenny almost hooked up with crazy model Agnes and her boyfriend? Hello—where was all the shock and controversy then?

What do you think PopWatchers? Is the threesome a good idea for Gossip Girl? Or does this feel like a ratings stunt? Will you tune in tonight?

    Can’t wait!

I agree with what you said about Jenny’s encounter with Agnes. No one made a fuss about it, yet if Nate had not shown up, who knows what could have happened.

    Hell yeah i am watching
and not because of the 3some
it´s because i love this show
people tend to say that these kids act like kids hello people they´re just 18…of course they´re acting like that
it´s a great show and i am watching

It feels like it’s November sweeps so I think this hysteria is to be expected, I just don’t know if it will translate into more viewers. I’ll be tuning in b/c I love this hot mess of a show, but I don’t expect anything racy to happen, unless you count innuendo and cut away shots as racy. I’m kinda more intrigued by this tie-dye and bandanna getup you speak of.

    • Amy

I can explain the tie-dye bandana in two words: ultimate frisbee.

You were one of “those” guys weren’t you, Tim?

  • melindalizabeth

How about the countless times in Season 1 (pre-Bluck) that Chuck woke up with two (or more) “hotel employees”? Did people think one of the girls was just holding the camera? Threesomes are old hat for this show, and exactly the type of thing it’s been known for since it first aired. This [new objection by the PTC], too, soon shall pass…

  • Kevin

LOL no thanks – I’m sure the threesome will be on YouTube 5 minutes after it airs….and the show will be sucky as usual.
I wonder if it’ll hit another all-time low next week in the ratings……..

    • Katie

      haha pretty much
remember that “gay kiss” from a few weeks back?
not only was it sucky, but it did nothing to help their ratings

GG is trying tooooo hard to be relevant, especially when shows like “One Tree Hill”, “Vampire Diaries” and even Friday’s “Smallville” are getting better numbers.

    • adritheprintmaker

Why would someone who thinks the show is sucky follow their ratings?

  • Kathy

I like the show, more for the fashion and eye candy than the storyline. On one hand, I don’t believe in censorship, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it. On the other, I can see how parents might be concerned. The show has a large teen audience, and these days it’s hard to keep anything from your children (they will get to it online or at a friends). Given that this is on the CW, early prime time….I can see the concern.

    • Q

I’ve been wondering about this exactly, Kathy – I feel like more people over 25 watch this show that teens. If the teens were watching, it would have better numbers! I’m 34, can’t get enough GG and neither can anyone I work with – most of us have kids of our own.

I don’t think this is really going to boost their ratings that much. It might give it a slight bump tonight but after that, nada. Why couldn’t the CW have kept Priviledged and dumped this show instead?

    • MeMe

YOU BITE YOUR TONGUE SARAH T.!!
I’m sorry to Kanye-all-caps-internet- yell at you. But Privileged was super boring. Gossip Girl is exactly what it says it is: dirty, funny, and salacious. Great tv.

    • mscisluv

I loved Privileged, and I have faithfully watched GG from the beginning, but this season totally blows.

  • Jill

Maybe I shouldn’t comment but Mr. Stack does want to know……I will not watch the show; I never have. (It’s just not my type of show) I think it is a ratings stunt and it will probably turn out to be nothing.

  • GeeMoney

Even though the quality of writing in GG is gone from bad to worse… most definitely!

  • PMD

It feels like a huge ratings stunt.I don’t care that it is shocking – because for GG it is not that big of a deal! But I watch GG anyways so I guess I am in. But I have to say if they hook up Jenny, Nate, and Chuck, I will be super annoyed!!! I mean those three have not shared anything more than a few glances (okay Nate and Jenny kissed a few times), but still it would be soooooooo lame!! Oh wait the whole premise of a threesome is already pretty lame!! I don’t care that it is shocking – because for GG it is not shocking at all!

  • Brooke

    I’m totally tuning in.

But then I do every week.

GG is my favourite show, and so what if it’s a little salacious? The whole point of the show is to be soapy and fun.

  • Frank Anderson

I think you kind of answered your own question with the ‘much hyped’ part of your piece.
I don’t know if it is the act some people are upset with as much as it is how the threesome is being used in the commercials for the show. They might claim they are upset because the show contains a threesome, but these are the same people ignoring other shows that do very similar things.
I think the whole thing is a bit funny, since any people speaking out against the episode kind of helps the show out. The worst thing anyone could do over this for Gossip Girl is ignore it. If anyone is offended by the idea of this then i simply suggest not watching the episode or clicking on stories like this. The more you whine about things like this the more it pushes people to check them out.
… I just hope that all these attempts at getting the CW press give us a few more years of Supernatural. That show rocks!

  • Molly

Gossip Girl is an ultra trashy show. It’s essentially the scripted version of my Super Sweet 16. Anyone whose outraged needs is clearly ignoring the more questionable fact that the show is essentially a fetishization of extreme wealth

    • Ally

I think people that say this show is like watching Super sweet 16 or any other rich kid equivalent, has NEVER watched the show. It is nothing like that, it’s the kind of show you either get it or you don’t.

They are rich, but the show is so much more than that, but I guess to understand that people would have to a)See it and b) be smart enough to get beyond its surface.

  • Sarah El

Too true. Way too much controversy. Let’s just see what happens in the episode first before we all get our panties in a bunch. But I’ll hand it to The CW – they sure know how to sell this show.
