'Yogi Bear' movie: Smarter than the average cartoon adaptation?

EW’s Nicole Sperling broke the news last night that The House Bunny’s Anna Faris was in negotiations to join a live action/CG-animated big-screen adaptation of the TV cartoon Yogi Bear. Also in talks? Dan Aykroyd to play the voice of Yogi and perhaps most tantalizing, Justin Timberlake to lend his pipes to Yogi’s bud Boo-Boo. The details of the plot that emerged would have Faris playing a nature documentarian who follows the bear pair for her latest project. Now, I’m not sure how much the world actually needs a high-tech version of Yogi Bear. And the Hanna-Barbera oeuvre has been the target of some pretty godawful adaptations in the past (Josie and the Pussycats, why hath thou forsaken me?). But I can’t say I’m not curious after this casting news. If nothing else, they are going for broke in the talent department. What do you think — yea or nay?

And here’s a puzzler for you: With this project and the upcoming Smurfs movie joining Flintstones and Scooby-Doo big-screen adaptations, which worthy Hanna-Barbera cartoons haven’t been made into a movie yet? (Who’s just itching to see Snorks: The Movie? Just admit it already.)

    Birdman! Dynomutt!

Oh, and they should adapt the DC Comics’ Space Ghost mini-series from a few years ago into a live-action movie.

    Big nay!

  • kellen

umm, when will we meet george jetson?!?!?!?! the jetsons definitely needs its own big-screen version.

    • CB

Jetsons the Movie came out in the 90’s. Tiffany sang a few songs and voiced Judy Jetson.

  • Snagglepuss

Heavens to Mergatroid! What about a film featuring a big ol’ pink mountain lion- starring yours truly, even?!??!

  • Stephanie T.

The Jetsons DID have their own big screen version in 1990. It was an animated feature. I am on the fence about this beecause we saw what happened to Josie and the Pussycats and Scooby Doo. The first Flintstones was ok but Jane Krakowsky should have replace Rosie O’Donell in the first one.

As for what can be made into a film, absoultely Blue Falcon and Dynomutt (but PLEASE do not turn it into Inspector Gadget the movie. BLECH!!). Space Ghost can be, Herculoids, Thundaar, Big Foot and the Muscle Machines (if anyone remembers that), M.A.S.K., Centurions, and Birdman can all be done. But they can’t be cheezy. Snagglepuss can’t be because now the damn media is so politically correct, Snagglepuss would be ripped to shreads by G.L.A.B.A. for being a sterotypical gay character even if Nathan Lane could be right person to voice him.

  • Jeff from Jersey; yes New Jersey

It*s a no-brainer that these talented actors are in this movie. Who would not love to be involved with the smarter than average bear? Hay hee hee.

  • Stephanie T.

The Jetsons was made into a film (animated) in 1990. Thanks to pollitical correctness, Snagglepuss cannot be made into a film. Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, Thundaar, Fangface,M.A.S.K., Centurions, Sky Comanders, Big Foot and the Muscle Machines, Birdman, Space Ghost, Plastic Man can all be done. But they cannot be cheezy.

Sorry about the duplicate message. I thought the first one did not go through.

  • J

yeah they were supposedly working on a live action jetsons film a few years back, what happened to that?

  • josh2082

Are we calling Anna Faris “big talent” now? Really? She’s funny, she’s pretty but I would argue that she’s well below Timberlake’s comedic abilities and Timberlake’s abilities are abyssmal compared to Dan Ackroyd’s…

  • J

snagglepuss and being PC? please explain.

  • J

they bshould bring some of those shows back first.

  • Nick T

    Nay. Nay. Nay!
PS-to “josh2082,” Anna Faris rules. I’d watch her in anything. Even House Bunny, which I did. Suck lemons for that one…

  • Katja

Snorks!! I love when people remember them

    • CB

I love it when people call them Snorks instead of Snorkels (can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that, ugh)

  • G

This could not sound worse. it’s not making yogi a movie, but this concept is certainly not a good one.

  • Stephanie T.

Lets face facts, Snaggle was flamboyant. Even SNL made fun of him. Lets just say that a Snagglepuss movie were to be made. If it was a parody, can he be parodied without GLABA complaining that it’s offensive?

  • Stephanie T.

On second thought, Seth McFarlane has Roger the Alien on “American Dad” and McFarlane got away with it, so maybe Snaggle can be done? Who knows?

  • Jim

I wonder if Top Cat will Warner’s next hanna-barbera silver screen venture.
