'Gossip Girl' recap: Chuck gets his party started...and stopped

gossip-girl_lI know I said that we had hit a season high a few weeks ago but last night’s episode was totes BESFTS. Best. Episode. So. Far. This. Season. And, no, if next week’s episode is better, I won’t keep changing this little slogan of mine.

But the Halloween episode of GG definitely had some really fun moments, not the least of which was the absolutely insane cleavage being rocked by Serena. Holy boob-age. It was distracting but the girl certainly knows how to get publicity. Maybe she’s got a future in PR after all!

Speaking of Serena’s gig, does her boss represent like every celebrity in the world? It certainly seems that way. Also, for the record, I would be perfectly content with delivering James Franco his underwear every day. In fact, I can probably split my duties at EW and Franco undies patrol. But back to the episode: Do we think she’s actually going to continue fake-dating Patrick? He seemed like a bore so I’m hoping the answer is “No.”

The big story though was Chuck and Blair’s roller-coaster relationship which once again hit a dip. Frankly, I can understand Chuck’s annoyance with Blair: she keeps interfering and plotting (I do find it amusing she has Mark Ronson on speed dial.). It was cute in high school but it’s time to move on. But I did like that they teamed up again by the end and seemed happier than ever. It felt like the return of Sexy Chuck and Blair. A very welcome return. BTW, who was that guy performing at Chuck’s club opening? I didn’t recognize him. Help me out, PopWatchers!

I sort of love that Nate is addicted to Olivia’s vampire film series, Endless Knights. It’s pretty genius. Also, it’s nice that he and Dan have become buddies but Nate needs a meaty story line ASAP. It is interesting that Serena is still peeved at him. She’s losing friends by the minute! By the end of the episode, she had walked away from Blair too after they ruined her big opening.

Does Olivia really need to take free condoms? Can’t the star of Endless Knights hit up the Duane Reade? I guess times are tough even for a movie star. The Dan/Olivia story line was kinda cute last night. I liked Dan getting all flustered over her love scenes (“He made you levitate!”). But where else is this relationship going? It feels a little stunted. That being said, Penn Badgeley has not looked hotter lately. He’s having a very handsome season.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s weird that Lily is not one bit concerned about 18-year old Chuck opening a club? Hellooo. The dude can’t even drink legally, but she’s prepared to go to his opening? Oh well. Her story line with Rufus was pretty cute. Also Matthew Settle looked adorable dressed up as Joey Ramone. I’m also kind of obsessed with the little girl’s Lady Gaga outfit; I want an adult version.

Finally Jenny got a juicy plotline. Now, she just needs to lose those heinous extensions.  How is she friends with a gay and he lets her leave the house like that? I don’t know who to blame more for her goth transformation. Anyways, when Little J. is a beast, she’s totally more fun. And it seems like she’s only gonna get worse. Still her big revenge plan was pelting Jonathan with eggs? Um snoozy. More importantly, I wonder if that was actually vintage Gautier that she wore to Chuck’s opening? Her onesie was pretty adorable. The other nice part of this development is that it gives Eric something to do too. His costume at the party was high-larious. I laughed out loud when he popped up on screen.

In fact, the best part of that party was the wardrobe. All the girls looked amazing (I think Serena is my fave) and the guys were adorable (no one can rock a suit vest better than Chuck Bass).

We had some major Russian servant action last night with fairly prominent screentime for both Dorota and Vanya. It’s been too long!

What did you think of last night’s Gossip Girl? Which outfit was your favorite? Are you liking the return of evil Jenny?

It was Albert Hammond Jr (guitarist of The Strokes) who was playing at Chuck’s club.
He’s a good friend of Ed Westwick.

    • Dom

It wasn’t Albert Hammond Jr. It was someone else singing his song “In Transit”

BEST episode. The Dan/Olivia dynamic is just as good as Serena and Dan although I agree..they need to get some juices running in their plot department. Here’s some math: Chuck Bass>The Entire Cast put together. I like how Jenny is bringing back the GG classic stories from the first season. Makes me nostalgic. Prohibition? Genius idea. Lily and Rufus? Need to divorce. I just don’t feel it. But to each their own I suppose. Nate needs to exit stage left..like next Monday. I’ll survive without his goober-ish expressions and lame relationship woes. Overall??? “Chair” or “Bluck” are single-handedly pulling GG out of the gutter. CANNOT WAIT until next week!!

Agreed, Nate needs to go and Lily and Rufus need less of a story. Their whole plot this episode just seemed like a waste of screen time. Also, I’m tired of Serena. She should leave with Nate. Chuck and Blair make this show and have since the first season so the weriters need to embrace that.

I find Nate funny as Dan’s buddy/wingman, hanging around in a flannel and watching bad vamp movies. If that’s all he is, he’s pretty to look at, but I agree I’d rather they wrote him out altogether than give him another storyline. He is so boring!

      • J.B.

I agree. I really like Nate and Dan as buddies. They have an excellent friendly chemistry.

    • Sara

They’ll never write Nate out. He’s been on the show since the beginning!

I think he should go back to Vanessa, their on and off lovestory was somewhat interesting.
I won’t say this episode was the “bestest” of the season but it was truly entertaining. I do think the writer and the director of “How to succeed in Bassness” should run the whole season. All the main cast got a storyline except Vanessa, and I didn’t like that; are the producers trying to get rid of Jessica as they did with Ashlee Simpson?. I liked goofy Rufus, he should stay that way, he’s so funny. Mean Jenny is back, wow, talking about a backstabber! Watch Out, E! Dan was hotter than ever, and such a dry joker (“Olivia making her entrance with Patrick? I don’t like that, I have a *fake* GUN!”). Blair was tiresome, (grow up, girl!), Serena was great and little Lady Gaga was a nice surprise! My favorite outfit (dress+behavior) was Dorota’s!

  • Liz

I loved Chuck & Blair this episode. I was getting alittle nervous that Blair was going to destroy things but by the end I was smitten with this relationship again. Chuck looked good. Prohibition looks good on him. ;)

Can I add that in my post above I added a winky face and I totally regret it. I apologize for my bried moment of emoticon weakness.

  • Liz

One more, was it just my imagination or was there not a single moment of Vanessa this episode? I for one am glad to see that she lifts right out and it doesn’t effect the show at all.

    • Amy Leigh

D/O both mentioned that she was at her sister’s gig in some other city. Boston, I think. It doesn’t matter, but it was mentioned in passing.

      • Q

Albany – I noticed only b/c it’s my hometown. Frankly, I hope she stays there.

  • BLM

Serena should always wear that silver dress she wore at the club opening. It was amazing! She’s way too hot, and too tall, to date that lame Patrick guy. Why can’t the casting people find her a tall, good-looking, charasmatic guy?? Everyone was all worried about the liquor license, but the cops totally could have busted everyone for underage drinking! An 18 year old getting a liquor license was very odd. Both Chuck and Dan looked HOT in their “gangster” outfit. And, YAY, no Vanessa (Dan said something about her visiting someone in Syracuse, I think).

  • Sina

This show has got to find a way to make Serena less whiny. I know they are teens but this is getting annoying although she had on a great push up bra! I don’t get the whole Jenny/Eric thing. Eric has been rich his whole life and Jenny is rich though Eric’s mom, why doesn’t Eric just expose that. This ep was just okay. Dan and his girlfriend are just too boring.

  • treee

I hadnt watched in awhile, so i texted my friend asking if serenas boobs were the newest character.

  • Karen

If THIS snoozefest was the “best episode ever”…well…you seem to have pretty low standards.

    • Jen

      wellllllll
this IS the magazine that talks about GLEE every freakin’ day…

    • Sara

I agree with Karen. What a boring record and watch later worthy episode. Oh wait, that’s how GG has been all season long. The writers need to write a storyline that keeps you at the edge of your seat. The Jenny storyline was actually the best at the end where she throws all her clothes and sewing machine into a pile, why can’t they put that in the teaser for next week’s episode?? The teasers always suck on the CW. What is Jenny going to do now? Is she going to go back to the sweet little J she used to be with the all-american preppy look and hang out with Eric? I don’t blame Eric for being pissed at her, you can’t have your cake and eat it too. I hope she gets ride of her fake hair. Why do all these young stars who gets famous end up looking so weird? At least she isn’t going out and getting lip injections. Leighton and Blake are so pretty, they need not to change their image. I wish I had Blake’s body, her legs go on forever! :( Anyways, hopefully GG will get better. I remember when it first came out, I gave the pilot a try and LOVED it!

  • Tiffany

I love myself some Chuck, but can we cool it with the speak easy themed places? I get that he wants to be Joe Kennedy, but this is getting superfluous. Also, I’m fairly certain that Blake Lively has implants, that’s no mere push-up bra.

    • Q

BL has the most amazing boobs and always has. No way they are fake.

  • Reena

This was a great episode and the previews of next week look even better i like when S & B are frenimies more then friends espicially when Blair choose Chuck over Serena it just proves their friendship isnt as solid as it seems. Cant wait for next week I hope Eric take little J DOWN!

  • Jill

If thats only a push up bra, then I need to know where to get one! Looked like implants to me?!?! I think Hillary Duff should just take Serena’s place, and Serena should go off to Brown, she is waaaaay to whiny! Although I like when Serena and Blair are more frenemies like they were in last night’s episode. I wish Nate would get a decent story line. I thought the scene with him and Dan watching the movie was pretty hilarious!

  • Via

Yeah, might have to agree about the implants (I know she’s had a nose job, so..) but either way those puppies were working that costume. I liked how this episode gave everyone their time to shine (Vanessa who?) and I thought that look Chuck gave Dorota was the cutest damned thing ever! Not to mention the one Dorota slipped Blair when she noticed her cheating. This was a cute episode, not my fav but not the worst.
Extra kudos to Chace Crawford for appearing on screen for more than 2 mins and not making me cringe. Can not remember the last time that happened.

  • Doris

I loved Lily getting Vanya to find some kids so Rufus could hand out candy! I love those two. Nice to see Dorota, too. Blair, grow up!
You & Chuck are so good together; please don’t spoil it. I did not miss Vanessa either (although I did notice she was missing). I guess only Ed Westwick misses her!

  • Amy Leigh

I actually enjoyed the episode. I’ve ended up liking D/O a lot more than I thought I would & I kind of wish that she could stick around longer. Although I’d like for this to lead to D/V. Maybe that’ll make Vanessa interesting. And even though Nate was barely in last night’s episode (love the D/N friendship), I’m liking the potential S/N storyline developing. I wanted to see them trade more barbs than the ones at the door last night. Next week should be interesting for the two of them. Still love C/B too.
