'Cake Boss': Cousin Anthony had it coming!

cake-boss_lBuddy Valastro is no Ace of Cakes, but it’s not his pastry-making abilities that got me to tune into the second season premiere of TLC’s Cake Boss. It’s those feisty kitchen shenanigans that keep me coming back for seconds, from Buddy’s mean wonderfully naughty treatment of his accident-prone Cousin Anthony, to the way he interacts with his nutball sister Mary who thinks nothing of cramming a (poisonous!) lily down her piehole. Like the Food Network’s Duff Goldman, I’m sure Buddy is hellbent on creating some cakes for the ages – witness his PVC-heavy Venus Fly Trap confection for a botanical garden soiree – but his show only gets cooking when he and his team go at it (like when his clueless sister Grace temporarily confiscated a diamond ring that was meant for a special proposal cake, leaving Buddy and Co. to dig through every last cupcake to locate the missing rock). And no episode is complete without a screaming Mary Valastro, aka Ma, who didn’t take too kindly to Buddy’s practical joke on Anthony (the pimply-faced homeboy got red in the face, thanks to a couple of bakery heavies who dumped a bucket of crimson frosting on that unsuspecting blockhead).  Then again, maybe Ma would have held her tongue, had she known what Anthony was going to do to the bakery’s car in the subsequent (new!) episode.

What do you think of the show? Is Carlo’s Bake Shop a delicious alternative to Charm City Cakes?

The Cake Boss is way too dysfunctional for me. And as a matter of taste, the bakery uses too much frosting on their cakes. Chef Duff is the man!

    • myprettypony

Whatever, I’m a long standing Carlos’ bakery customer and they are great! Have you actually had a Duff cake? Probably not! But you can go into Carlos’ any time to get cupcakes and cookies.

I’m not sure if it was this show or one of its carbon copies that I was watching the other day, but the cakes simply don’t look as unique or cool as the ones on Ace of Cakes with Duff. That show is amazing and their whole staff have great chemistry.

  • Gena

Cake Boss is a billion times better than Ace of Cakes! Charm City doesn’t make everything out of something edible, that’s what is so amazing about these cakes. When Cake Boss made the Brooklyn Bridge, you could eat it! It wasn’t made of cork wrapped on fondant. Buddy is the best!

    • Laura

I agree Gena! The Charm City crew takes the easy way out way too often for me. You can make almost anything out of food and cake (as well as other baked goods) is extremely versitile. I like the Charm City crew, they seem very personable and excited about their work, but use that modelling chocolate more often!

        i love that cake

    • M

I only just saw the second half of the episode with the venus fly trap cake, and correct me if i’m wrong, but that cake didn’t look wholly edible either. I’m not saying they suck or anything, but I think some of the coolest cakes just aren’t fully edible.

    • Tara

Gena – I am with you… Cake Boss is so much better than ace of cakes simply becuase his cakes are edible. Ace of cakes cakes are not.

    • Tina

I agree with Gena too. I love this new show! While I will always be a fan of Duff, Mary Alice and Geoff I think I like the yelling and realness of Cake Boss. I think his cakes are awesome too.

      • Sara

Are you kidding? No comparison, Cake Boss stinks

    • robert

Cake Boss tells the world what a major idiots made the “cake of your dreams” and makes it all OK to B!tch and snark at people – it’s a wonder that everyone in the damn place doesn’t have their middle finger frosted and displayed for all the world to see – title should be Cake d-bag and the &ucking and #ucking family issues

    • Thinker

Did you see the show last night. He does not make everything out of cake. Duff is way more talented.

    • lauren

I totally agree! Cake Boss is far better than any other on the planet! Cake Boss puts the rest to shame! Thank you Cake Boss you are super amazing & oh so delicious!

      • annette

I AGREE COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER THANKS LAUREN

YOUR RIGHT THAT WAS A GREAT CAKE AS WAS THE LOBSTER WEDDING CAKE AND ALL OF THE CAKES,COOKIES AND PASTERIES ARE GREAT

  • BudEsMama

    He repulses me.

  • Lisa

I love Cake Boss! I’ve only seen a couple of episodes of Ace of Cakes, but I wasn’t impressed by his cakes at all. I would rather have one of Buddy’s cakes anyday. I saw Duff on one of those cake competition shows and his was pitiful – the others were way out of his league.

  • Kayo

This dysfunctional family grates on my nerves. The shenanigans are a put-on for ratings. Each episode makes them look more idiotic and simple. Their cakes are standard Italian bakery fare with too much frosting. I’d much rather watch Duff or the other cake artists on Amazing Wedding Cakes. I’d rather watch a rerun of CSI:Miami (slightly less icky than Cake Boss).

  • Dianne

I’m a fan of this show–you can tell that the family dynamics are very real and that Buddy really loves the cake business.

Why does TLC insist on showcasing crass, obnoxious, uneducated Jersey trash for their “reality” shows? Like Doug Wilson’s ‘Moving Up’ series. You people from NJ just *prove* the stereotype is one that springs to life any time you open your huuuuge mouths.

    • Gina

As a current Jersey Girl I am deeply offended. I am pretty sure that you can find idiots in every state. It is just that here in Jersey we are not ashamed of them and proudly display them. Because quite frankly we think are idiots are smarter than your idiots. Oh and for the record some of the smartest, richest, and most talented people live in Jersey.

  • duranmom

To Cayden — call me crazy, but crass, obnoxious and uneducated can come from anywhere. As a former Jersey girl, I’m not going to deny it, I’m just going to remind you to not ignore the other 49 states. Where do you live?

    • robert

and you don’t think all the “Drama” in the bakery is all for the camera – fake, fake, fake – just like all other TLC shows

      • yummycupcake

LOL. Believe me, the yelling and screaming is real

      • emma

I have been going to Carlo’s for MANY years before the show started and the bakery drama is ALL real. Honest-to-god, the sisters, mother, cousins, and Buddy himself have always acted that way. They are a great group.. I love them!

  • Juliette

Maybe some TLC executives decided there was still time to try to cash in on The Sopranos. If so, they forgot that the two most important ingredients that went into that gritty show were good story writers and good actors. All we get in Cake Boss is tooth-scraping grit and unlovable goons, with a dash of sadism. You might as well call the kitchen help “Goombah-Loompas”! More…superchefblog.com

Seriously??? What show are you watching?

  • thers

love ace of cakes, but this is a great show. im italian and from ny, it hits right at home haha

  • yanit

I like both shows. But I have to give Buddy credit. He actually gets in their and creates. I don’t see Duff doing anything but talking about what others are doing. They both do great work. But I love the family dynamics of the Cake Boss. And if you really have watched the Cake Boss crew has created some incredible work on par with Ace of Cakes. And there is no such thing as too much frosting! I’m a little grossed out by how both bakeries transport those intricate cakes out in the open! (Ewww)

  • Alicia

Oh, I love Cake Boss! Buddy is so loveable and kind and giving. He always does that right thing, even when it seems impossible. (see bridezilla episode) I just adore him, and I love how family-centered he is. It’s easy to see how much love and pride goes into what he does. I just want to give him a hug.

    • Kayo

Oh puke…. there is so much yelling and name calling. I don’t call that loveable.

  • james

I have to beg to differ, as an Italian-American the shennanigans are not put on for the show! I know how my family interacts just at Sunday dinner, let alone if we all worked together day in and day out. No, America, that’s not an act. That’s called being Italian! :) Stereotype? You bet! The truth? You bet!

    • Gina

It is real. Try coming to Sunday dinner. If you don’t yell no one will hear you! Wallflowers will not survive. You have to be outspoken or you will be stuck sitting with the old aunt who is still in morning for her husband who died 40 years ago wearing all black with tissues up her sleeves. (Don’t laugh in my family it is Aunt Anna)

  • Jenn

I love Cake Boss! Was so happy to see that the premiere was on last night. I look forward to seeing what Buddy and his family come up with each week and the added pranks are a bonus! Loved when Ma went upstairs last night to remind them who the boss was. Best line – You may be the Cake Boss but I’m THE Boss! Loves!
