'V' gets cloudy promotion

ABC is taking to the skies to hype its upcoming alien invasion series V: Skywriting! It’s true. ABC will be clouding blue skies with big ole Vs to generate buzz for the series and confuse fans of True Blood. It’s a fine way to promote something, especially if you subscribe to the belief “If it’s good enough for Tori and Dean, it’s good enough for [my product].” I can only assume this was the first draft of the skywriting pitch (I watch Mad Men, I know how “pitches” work):

Skywriting_lI guess it makes sense then that they settled on just “V,” especially because ABC has impressively nabbed the first Google hit for the 22nd letter — which had been V for Vendetta for ages. Luckily there are no constants edging it out, unlike for C (speed of light) or K (Boltzmann constant).

Anyway, this raises the (inevitable?) question: What are the greatest moments in skywriting pop history? “Surrender Dorothy” has to take top honors, but I’d put Big Fish‘s swoon-worthy writing next, followed by Celebrity, and then by the Simpsons episode “I’m with Cupid.”

Are there clouds in your coffee, PopWatchers? What great moments in skywriting did I leave off my list?

I thought the other show with Lost people that isn’t Lost is “FlashForward” (Penny, Charlie, and Sawyer’s baby mama are all on it).

pretty sure that’s what they meant. FlashForward is “that show with LOST people that isn’t LOST” and V is “that OTHER show with LOST people that isn’t LOST” lol

Yeah, this one has Juliet. The other has Charlie and Penny :)

I second that motion!! I miss Ron Livingston!

You know what would be a great promotional idea? Get a large tinfoil-UFO-type balloon and let it fly across the sky. You could pretend someone was trapped inside. Like your 6 year old son or something.
    Oh wait.
    Nevermind.

I doubt a stunt like that would get much attention.

Or better yet it could work just like electronic signs planted all over the city of Boston. People might think it was terrorist attack or something. That could work too you know.

Anyone remember when they had the skywriter on Big Brother?

  • Candice

I wish ABC could put this much backing into their other shows (Ugly Betty)!!!

Why don’t they just rip off the marketing ploy from the original. There were posters with “The Visitors Are Our Friends” all over the place, then like a few days before, each poster was spray-painted with the “V”.

Strange how the V (visitors) offer heath care and environmental measures and at the same time don’t want any scrutiny and to be always shown in a positive light. I have seen that somewhere. Where was that. Oh yeah, our rubber stamp media when dealing with liberal issues like socialized health care or pseudo science like global warming. I think I will be watching this show.
