Can Zach Galifianakis play regular dudes?

Categories: Casting

Zach-Galifianakis_lZach Galifianakis might play kind of a weirdo again. Stop the presses!

Galifianakis, whose break-out role in The Hangover this summer has made him super in-demand, is in talks for the film adaptation of It’s Kind of a Funny Story, a YA novel about a 15-year-old’s suicidal thoughts and brief stay in a psychiatric hospital. Galifianakis would play one of the adults in the same facility.

I am wild about Galifianakis — I love his iconoclastic stand-up, I was one of dozens of people who liked Dog Bites Man, and I technically sat through all of The Hangover. But much as I love his deadpan weirdness, I’m worried that that’s all he’s playing these days; yesterday’s Bored to Death pilot just confirmed that I have reason for concern. It’s not that Galifianakis does a bad job with these roles, but Non-Threatening Weird Guy has a limited appeal and shelf life. Diversify, young man! Diversify.

I want to Zach play the lead — not the bumbling sidekick — in a romantic dramedy or something, PopWatchers. Help me out: What would you cast him in, against type?

not quite what you’re looking for, but he played a normal-type dude in G-force and he didn’t do half bad.

  • Jara Wallace

    The Snuggler ^u^

  • Captain Average

He’d make a pretty good Elwood P. Dowd. Waddaya say, Mr. Spielberg?

  • David Reynolds

Maybe you need to look a little deeper then just the main stream. Zach was the lead in a movie called “Visioneers” where he played a normal guy. You should watch this movie and see for yourself how he acts in different roles.

The exception that proves the rule, unfortunately.

  • Jessica

I liked him as a co-star in tru calling. It wasn’t a leading-man type role, but definitely not a weirdo.

  • Ned

Remember how well “Heartbeeps” did for Andy Kaufman’s career? And how we all remember him for that instead of for his iconoclastic standup or his turn as Latka on “Taxi”? No?

Galifinakis really touched on some serious drama with his performance in “Visioneers”, written and directed by the Drake Brothers. Check it out. He’s a talented artist, I think he will be able to do dramatic roles if he wants to.

What about in OUt Cold. He is kinda normal in that (except that he is constantly drunk). I think that guy is normal compared to some of the other charcters).

  • Gila

Not to go too deep here, but what about his role in Heartbreakers? It wasn’t much but he did well – and the character was pretty normal.

  • Raven_Moon

I thought he was pretty normal on “Tru Calling.” Despite that, yes I would like to see him in a dramedy.

When Hollywood makes the “John Goodman” story, he should be #1 on the list.

    • William Miller

Exactly! He looks like he could Goodman’s little brother!

    Tom Goes to the Mayor

yeah i really liked him in “Tru Calling” even though he was practically invisible. what he needs to do is be in a movie with a weirder person and it’ll make him seem normal.

Bubble Boy. He peaked in Bubble Boy.
