'Weeds' season 5 finale: Shane = this show's best character

shaneWithout spoiling anything (until after the jump, when I actually spoil EVERYTHING), I’ll just say that Shane Botwin (Alexander Gould), one-time bearer of the nickname Fruit Punch and long ago the voice of Nemo, now shares the refined outdoor recreational tendencies of three Heathers and a Veronica. I’ll also say this: Shane is currently the best character on ‘Weeds.’

After Pilar threatened to have Nancy’s “extraneous” sons killed, Shane clubbed that chick in the head with a croquet mallet! She fell into the pool and the blood just drifted away from her scheme-filled noggin like runny watercolor. It was kind of beautiful, really. This was the best season finale shocker — on Weeds — ever. Hello, Shane couldn’t let Nancy wear only black for the near future. She has so many other clothes. Pilar, you’ll remember, also arranged for the attempted assassination of Nancy that resulted in Shane getting shot in the arm. Basically, she had it coming.

We knew Shane had it in him. Sure, up until season 5, Strange Botwin has been the “good kid” to brother Silas’ derelict, but there was a major role reversal all season — Silas is now a responsible business owner while just last week we saw 14-year-old Shane swill red wine and pull a knife on teenage Spanish-speakers who unwisely chose to use heroin under his roof. The show’s always suggested a dark and dangerous mind beneath Shane’s usually placid exterior. “I’ve got rage in me,” he matter-of-factly told the school therapist after composing this rather threatening bitch-ass white boy “rap.” He bit that kid’s foot in karate class (which, if you think about it, very indirectly makes Shane responsible for Weeds‘ entire post-Agrestic border situation, but let’s not dwell on that; this is supposed to be a glowing review) and does anyone remember when he beheaded a little girl in a homemade terrorism video?

Action-based memories are fun, and there are plenty more, but the essence of Shane comes most alive in the modest form of his trademark silent death-glare (pictured above, awww). Tally up his hundreds of stewing stare sessions and suddenly, finally, WHACK! It was all leading up to this — the little boy who conversed with his dead father, treasured a nudie pic of his mother, and told his graduating class “you have failed us all”would eventually snap, in the most fortuitous (for the Botwins) way possible.

Shane, we salute your badasserie(pronounced “bahhh-doss-ay-REE” by Tyra) and thank you for the last-minute restoration of our faith in Weeds. Since you killed her, they will grow.

“Without spoiling anything”…? How about disclosing the seasons finale..? Bright. Not.

    • Elizabeth

Keep reading, Kevin: “Without spoiling anything (until after the jump, when I actually spoil EVERYTHING),”

Oh Kevin…I will give you the benefit of a doubt and guess you are still half-asleep while reading this article. And not just dense.

    • Snarf

Posting before morning coffee = FAIL

    • Nanci

Umm, Kevin? Why on EARTH are you reading a recap if you haven’t seen the episode yet? I have not a whit of sympathy for you in this regard.

  • Sheri

Go Shane!! A great show I’ve watched from the start has never ceased to amaze me that it gets better and better every season. Now if we could only convince producers to do the show every 6 months instead of 12.

Like my husbands comment- He doesnt like to watch shows like this because as soon as it gets really good and you get all into it- its over for a year. :(

    • Lance

This is a show that watchers should have stopped watching after a year! This used to be the funniest, best-written COMEDY on TV. Ever since Nancy burned down her house it’s turned into a ridiculous dramedy without the comedy. I think I laughed 2x this season, and if DirecTV hadn’t given me SHO for free, I would not have even watched this season.

      • Amarantha

You’re not wrong, Lance. Nancy is unlikeable, her husband is dull, Doug is moronic. The show has lost its satiric edge and just indulgences in shock for its own sake. Unfunny and boring.

Ok, so what’s a better tv show then Weeds, please don’t say 2 and a half men, House, Lost, or any reality crap.

This show still destroys 98% of what is aired on television, like it or not.

      • MJ

I loooove Weeds! its dry comedy! I laugh! and I love the drama and the suspense….i guess if you’re not into that its not your thing you should watch two and a half men or big bang theory if you want to laugh….

      • Cal

Dude. You obviously don’t have one of the maturest humors yet. Maybe you should wait a few years to get into it. I’d pay the SHO fee for it specifically.. . And Dexter. :)

    • MJ

OMG! I know pilar is dead and wam its over how can you keep me in suspense for so long i need to know what happens next

  • Brad

I saw it and yeah, Shane was noticeably different (Really!) all season. This definitely has me watching what will happen next season.

  • Vince

This season, Nancy has been reflecting on her past and what affect her actions have had on her children. Even she knows her children are f’d up, but she found out how much last night.

  • kt

never saw that one coming, but couldnt have come at a better time! great finale for an ok season, but sets up for what seems to be an awesome season, cant wait to see how it goes next seson!

  • bunker

This season was excellent. I’m glad the show bounced back after the past two seasons, which were watchable at best.

  • lynn

I really did not see that coming with shane and it was a good finale although the whole season itself was by far the worst. I still love the show but I sure hope it goes back to the way it was. Bring conrad back!!

  • Juan

are we all watching the SAME show? this was by far the worst season finale of the series. wow, shane knocked off pilar. whoopdee doo. let’s face it, the writing hasn’t been good for at least two years. i kept coming back to watch it because i’ve already invested so much time in it, and i keep hoping it’ll go back to being good. the fact that SHANE is the ‘best’ character, as this article says, reminds us of how far the quality of the show has gone down. i couldn’t wait for the next seasons to come after their respective season finales…but this year? meh.

  • bhm1304

I agree, that was the best “Weeds” finale — ever. The performance of Elizabeth Perkins this season has been wonderful as well. Celia’s assembled crew with Isabelly as the “brains” should be hilarious. Anxious for next season – time to bring back Conrad.

  • Lili

If you’ve been watching the whole series, you would have seen this coming a LOOONG time ago. Shane’s always been a little “off”. Anyway, I thought it was great, as usual, I can’t wait how Nancy gets out of this one next season!

  • Erin

That finale was awesome, I watched it twice so I could see the head-bashing a second time. Way to go Shane!

  • Christina

Shane in the last scene justified a whole mediocre season. Shane and the croquet mallet were the best things about the whole season.

And can celia please stop being obnoxious.

  • Anitamargarita

Yes, bring back Conrad!!!! Ceclia just assembled the “old team” including Sanjay, so where’s Conrad?!?!?!! I really hope that is a Season 6 opener suprise.

  • paige

Ive always liked Weeds season finale’s… its everything else that is starting to go downhill and i think the show needs to end next season. Not as desperate as Entourage needs to end NOW but i would be very happy if weeds packed it in already.

  • D

Yes, the ending caught me by surprise. I want to know if anyone knows where this was shot at? The outside of the house where the pool scence was shot is the same as ‘the beverly hillbillies’ movie was shot, and other movies. Probibly in hollywood or bel air.
