Heat Wave, the book crime author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) has been writing on ABC’s Castle, has begun to roll out on ABC.com, and though I’m still not sure I’ll be buying it when it’s released in print on Sept. 29, I am eagerly awaiting the second chapter tease.
In Heat Wave, Pulitzer Prize-winning magazine journalist Jameson Rook researches an article on New York’s Finest by tailing homicide detective Nikki Heat as she investigates the murder of a real estate mogul. The first chapter finds a reference to Heat having sat in “The Loss Chair” herself (a nod to Castle‘s Det. Kate Beckett having lost her mother to a homicide) and to her love of animated movies (so I guess Castle is taking inspiration from elsewhere, unless I missed an episode).
What I find the most fun — besides looking for snippets of dialogue we heard in Season 1 — is reading how Castle plays up the sexual tension between Heat and Rook: “They turned to face each other, and she was a little startled by his proximity but didn’t pull back. Nose-to-nose with him in the heat, she held his gaze and watched the dance of reflected sunlight playing off his eyes. And then she blinked. Oh s—, she thought, what was that? I can’t be attracted to this guy. No way.” Castle creator Andrew Marlowe says specific page numbers will be referenced on the show in Season 2, I suspect that will be one of them.
As for who is the real author of Heat Wave, Marlowe insists there’s no mystery: “Richard Castle. The roguishly handsome best-selling author of the Derek Storm mystery series. He’s charming. He’s a good writer. And I don’t know why you’re trying to take credit away from him. The guy worked hard on it.” As hard as he’s working on solving a murder in the Hamptons via his Twitter page no doubt.

This is fun – I’m going to be checking it out on ABC’s site. However can I just say that I HATE the name Nikki Heat?! Why must she sound like a stripper?
I don’t know if I’ll buy the book; mysteries aren’t my usual fare, but maybe one that allows me to constantly visualize Nathan Fillion is the exception to the rule.
Love Nikki Heat. it’s so Mickey Spillane Tongue in cheek. .
The fact that Castle does stuff like this–and pokes fun at itself in the process–makes it such a great show to just sit back and enjoy. Can’t wait ’til it’s back in the Fall. Love Nathan Fillion, love Castle.
Well, Kate did catch the “bibbity bobbity boo” reference when Castle bought her the dress for the art show gala. Only cartoon reference I can think of.
I have to say that I was impressed and I think it has a great shot at being a good novel! And I love Castle! So glad it is back!!
I think the selection of the name — Nikki Heat was chosen by Castle to get under Beckett’s skin. I do recall that there was an exchange b/w Castle and Beckett about the name, but I don’t remember the details. I like the name. It makes one think of strippers.
Even Beckett said that Nikki Heat sounds like a stripper name.
But like Derek Storm, Castle’s first detective, it offers the possibility of lots of different variations on ‘Heat’ for titles. And I think Castle is supposed to be more of a pulp fiction writer than high art.
Very clever marketing. I’ll probably buy the book.
I love Castle’s twitter page. They captured the voice of the charachter perfectly and I love the little on going mystery and when Alexis takes over his Twitter account and does her own post back to her dad.
After reading the first three chapters I’m officially a Richard CAstle fan. The final scene of the third chapter was chilling. Go and read it, you’ll love it.
Cool idea — I love this show and sure will also love the book as well.
Entertaining – I’ve read the first 5 chapters and I’ll look forward to the rest of them … But will someone PLEASE get an editor/proofreader on the payroll to catch/fix the errors. Castle wouldn’t let that crap go out under his name.
Castle (with that sly smile) already disclosed that Heat would be a “bit slutty” it’s fun! Yay Team Castle! Can’t wait for “Deep in Death.”
I’m confused. So “Heat wave” is a real book by Richard Castle? –Who is not the actor who plays him on the show “Castle” ? And the Derek Storm novels are real or fictional? And what books does the “author” Richard Castle actually have out?
The novel is written under the pseudonym “Richard Castle” but I’m operating on the hypothesis that the real author may be Max Collins.
I am looking also for other ichard Castle books. Are there any or is that fiction also?
me too i didn’t know that it was a real book…wow<3
I just wish she wasn’t named Nikki Heat- she sounds like a stripper or a porn star
“Castle” is my guilty pleasure. Nothing gets in the way of my seeing the show or watching repeats. The interplay between Castle and Beckett is captivating and if you’re tuned into the sexual tension between them, words are not needed for some of the looks between them. Just loved the scene where Kate gets caught trying to find the sex scene in the book. Fillion uses his eyes and mouth for expression to the nth degree. His lovely daughter is growing in the role, too. Keep the stories coming!
Do you remember what episode Beckett Looks for THAT part in the book?
Stephanie
Yeah that’s in season 2 episode 5!:)
I love the whole bit. Investigator, journalist, add a little bit of sex…. and solve the crime
I liked Castle last season, but now I’m absolutely loving it! This show has got it all – intersting stories, likable characters, a blossoming romance and now an actual book I can read between episodes to satisfy my hunger for more of that delicious Beckett/Castle chemistry! I’m off to the bookstore!
