Tom DeLay is the name DWTS executive producer Conrad Green expected to have “most people splattering on their cornflakes” following this morning’s announcement on Good Morning America. How did it come about? “I know it will sound stupid, we just asked him,” Green tells EW. “We usually throw a few Hail Marys every season to people we don’t think are gonna say yes, but we think, oh, why not ask him. Occasionally, they come off. As it turns out, Tom DeLay likes to do a bit of the Two Step, he likes dancing with his wife. His daughter is a country dancing champion, I believe. He actually really enjoys dancing. Now I don’t know whether that translates into him being the next Mario Lopez on the dance floor, but I think he’s gonna come into it with a big smile on his face and probably surprise a lot of people cause he’s gonna embrace it so much.”

Is DeLay the dancer you’re most excited to see when DWTS returns with a special three-night premiere on Sept. 21? Vote in our poll after the jump. Will he make it to the three back-to-back double elimination episodes in Weeks 5, 6, and 7 (which host Tom Bergeron is already referring to as “the ballroom bloodbath”)? Who will take home the Season 9 trophy? Predictions welcome in the comments section.

Tom Delay? Seriously? I personally find him deplorable – greedy, corrupt, right up there with Karl Rove in the realm of dirty politics.

    • Marlo

What does politics have to do with a person as a dancing contestant?

Can’t you vicious liberals leave politics out of anything? It’s not all about you.

      • Todd

It’s not politics at all, really. It’s just the fact that Tom DeLay is, by most accounts, a terrible human being. The fact that he is a Republican is pretty irrelevant when you consider what people have accused the guy of.

    • Rick

      I concurr – he’s a maggot!

      • aban

I agree — he is a Democrat/liberal on the extreme left (not a Republican)

    • ANNIE

ABC and Dancing with the STARS have reached a real LOW, by having Tom DeLay on DWTS. I feel so bad for Cheryl. To put her in such a digusting Sitution., having that Sleazy man, so near her . My skin crawls for her. Shame on you ABC. I’m not watching DWTS and I have enjoy watching every season. I am so disappointed in ABC.( It’s not the first time.) You actually called HIM, My goodness, did you all misplace all sense of honor!!!
I think all the prof. dances and fans should “boycott” DWTS!!! ( ABC, TOO!! )

    • Robert

Yeah Sleazy is right!!!! DeLay, who is awaiting trial on charges that he conspired to launder corporate money into campaign donations, is also fearful of what Jack Abramahoff might say to implicate him as well.

  • Mary

Just go to Wikipedia and have a look at Tom DeLay. Nice to see that the producers are referring to sleazy politicians who were indicted on criminal charges as “stars.” Ugh!

  • GeeMoney

Who knew that running the Senate qualified you to be a star? Who the eff put him on the show? Was Carrot Top or Danny Bonaduce or some other loser not available?!?!?!?!?

    • Politics 101

Hey genius, there’s a difference between the U.S. House of Representatives and the United States Senate. DeLay was a Congressman, not a Senator.

  • Jill

Why so many contestants? I think it makes it harder for each person to gain a devoted fanbase.
I hope Donny O. doesn’t act as obnoxious as his sister did.

    • Sally in Chicago

Why so many contestants? Everybody needs a payday. Did you know they get paid $200,000 whether they win or not? That’s one lump sum $200,000….At least their managers & PR people were working hard for the money. I find it laughable that they have such a crowded field of contestants. It’s like AI and it’s silly 14 instead of 12 finalists.
DWTS is not going to be interesting until you get down to the last 4 or 5.

    • aBc

Too late – he was already totally obnoxious on GMA when the announcements were being made.

      • Silv

I think they said something about some triple eliminations this season.

  • GS

Yuck! I couldn’t care less about any of these people. They are scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

    • Rusty

Well, you take what you can get. people like Brangelina don’t need the show to boost or start thier careers and certainly wouldn’t want to risk ruining whatever fame they’ve achieved so far.

    • Marie

Too late! DWTS has always been scrapping the bottom of the barrel. None of their contestants can really be considered stars.

    • Silv

There are two main arguments everywhere about this show — A) What constitutes a “Star”, a term used very loosely on this show, and B) How much dance experience is too much dance experience, considering most of these “stars” who have after all, gone into show business, usually increase their chances when starting out by taking singing and dancing classes.

      • Sarah D

Liky Mya, she is a dancer. So what are their expectations going to be of someone who already knows how to dance. Oh well, at least she won’t be a trainwreck.

    • aban

good for you:)…please don’t watch…so we the fans can vote easier and faster…:) so hard to call in when there millions trying to vote for the favorites…pls don’t watch…

      • ANNIE

I vote at the same time my couple are dancing and get through right away on all my phones…I know who are the best usually after the lst show. PS Even if I’m not watching,I will be voting for Donnie, until I hear that DeLay is off!! Ofter that ,I will vote for the best dancer… Soooo get Delay the H-ll off soon!

  • Julie E.

The Tom DeLay choice is ridiculous. I won’t be watching.

Also, I think Mya is a ringer. Hasn’t she danced for a long time? Real dancing, not just “dancing while singing.” I thought she did.

    • KP

She did. I know in an interview she said she did ballet, jazz, and tap. I guess we’ll see if she can translate that into ballroom.

    • anna

Yeah, I don’t think Mya should be allowed. She’s known for being a true dancer. Other than her and this policitician, it looks kind of interesting.

    • aban

good for you:)!…please don’t watch…the lesser people watch the show, the better it is for us — the real fans..we can call in easily and we don’t have to read your personal opinions…tips: go watch the news MSNBC on healthcare instead:) please please please i am begging you…don’t watch…appreciate it!

  • Al

Quite the cast- but Chairman, what’s the secret ingredient- CHEESE!

    • Dina

      Moldy cheese.

    • Alton Brown

Just remember he’s used to eating with the Judges not being judged. I am looking forward to seeing him.

      • Cathy

Me too! I’m glad he’s “in.”

    • ks

Sure he is cheesy and can’t act very well-I will be waiting for him to say ALA CUISINE :) I want to give him high hopes

  • Lorie

Tom DeLay – WTH?! I would rather have seen Paula Abdul instead, and I don’t even like her. I never heard of a few others, but I can’t wait to see how Donny, Debi and Kathy do.

    • aban

the ratings are going to go through the roof…good americans are going to appreciate a politician (liberal or conservative) taking time off, dancing…and we can take a break from Obama’s press conferences…and…not hear another stupid news on healthcare……go Tom!

  • Dwayne

I never really payed much attention to this show, but this is definitely a nice collection of stars I just might have to tune in to see

  • mscisluv

Clarissa Explains It All, followed by Sabrina, were both big parts of my childhood, so I will be rooting for Melissa Joan Hart all the way!

    • John

I had a childhood crush on her, so I’m all about catching MJH on the show!

  • Meg

Joanna Krupa was hilarious on the first episode of The Superstars this summer…when she told TO off after they lost, I laughed so hard I almost fell off my couch!!! I think she’ll add some nice crankiness to the show :o)

    • Silv

Was just thinking the same thing – wonder if they’d pair Joanna Kranky with Maks! Too much friction?

  • NikkiB

Tom DeLay!!! Seriously! I smell a trainwreck. He will not make it past the first week.

    • kahuna

Really? Did you see the poll results? Trust me, between ditto-heads and freepers, he will stick around for far too long. Why didn’t they ask Alberto Gonzales instead? He’s desperate for work too. But as slimy as he is, at least he has a pleasant demeanor.

  • Lyssa

I cannot wait to see the Chairman strut his stuff on the dance floor. This makes my morning.

    • kahuna

      What “chairman?”

  • jules

    Dancing with the Has-Beens

  • Debi

Well, I guess that frees up an hour of my TV week. What else is on Monday nights?

    • Deb

House, MD for starters….not sure if I will watch DWTS this fall. No one really I see on the list is interesting to watch….
