Pee-Wee Herman, live on stage: Pass the tequila

Paul Reubens has announced his triumphant return to public scrutiny: His feature films never panned out, but Pee-Wee Herman will appear live onstage in Hollywood with a limited engagement beginning November 8 at L.A.’s The Music Box @ Fonda. (Tickets are on sale as of this morning.) According to a statement, The Pee-Wee Herman Show will feature Miss Yvonne, Cowboy Curtis, Jambi, Chairry and all your favorites.” Ha! Please let Laurence Fishburne (Cowboy Curtis) have not much going on in November, okay, universe? If this goes well, Pee-Wee’s next meaty role could be on (or off-) Broadway in Death of a Salesman: A Non-Mysterious Murder, the set-up for which is embedded below.

P-dubs, if Reubens’ theater run is a success, would you be into another ‘Pee-Wee’s Playhouse’ movie? Or would you anyway?

Got my tickets first thing this morning, though I’ve never been to the Music Box. Cabaret tables? Cannot. Wait. For. This.

Pee Wee should make another film with Tim Burton. If Burton can make a financial bomb like Ed wood then surely he can take a chance on one of the people who gave him his big break in the business. Please studio’s; fund this. Any trepidation over doing so should be overcome by the allure of DVD sales and the good will you will create with fans.

Too bad it will only be in Los Angeles. To be honest, the Groundlings stage show version was a hell of a lot funnier than the G rated television show.

This is so WEIRD! I literally just bought “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure” off of Amazon like a week ago because I was having a total Pee Wee jones. I already have “Big Top Pee Wee,” but he was already phoning it in at that point. Why do I have to live in the midwest?! Foiled again…

I love the adult version of Pee Wee’s Playhouse. I can’t remember what cable station had it on, but I remember taping it VHS old school when it was on. I totally forgot that Cowboy Curtis was Laurance Fishbourne. It is too bad it is only in LA.

I really hope the show in LA does well so more Pee Wee love can be spread around the world, not fair only in one city but hopefully something else will come out of it. We need more Pee Wee in our lives!!!

  • tcrab

I think he should take the show on the road to select cities (fingers crossed – please let Philly be one of them)and have HBO play one of the shows. Get the interest building again and then come out with a kick ass movie.

  • orville

If he can’t take this on the road, can he at least do a pay-per-view event? Laurence Fishburne showing up would be legendary!

  • Gre

I agree. Laurence Fishburne returning as Cowboy Curtis, even if only one time, would be a YouTube moment for the AGES! (Okay, for a few days anyway.) Come on, Mr. Fishburne! Throw your fans a bone!!

  • Meagan

I’d also like to see S. Epatha Merkeson show up as Reba the Mail Lady!

Say what you will about Paul Rubens and his antics, but that guy is a frickin’ genius! Ridiculously talented and so glad he’s back! Now come to Chicago Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love for this show to come to NYC. I would take my son (who is now 23). We used to watch the Playhouse every Saturday, tape every episode, watched and owned both of his films, were members of his Fun (fan) club, own the original toy Playhouse (one in an unopened box-wore one out, and hoping it will be worth money someday),own every character toy, and went trick -or-treating in our Pee Wee Herman Costumes . (I was known as “Mrs Pee Wee”). We loved everything Pee Wee Herman, and we know that he is a very brilliant comedian and writer/creator. I wish Paul Ruebens great success, and please come to NYC for your loyal fans (Ages 23-55++),and to make new ones!

As I too am stuck in the midwest (don’t cry, Michigan! I really do love you!), I won’t be going. BUT, if I lived in Cali, I’d be there with bells on. LOVE LOVE LOVE PEE WEE!

Pee-Wee’s Bog Adventure is one of the funniest films ever made. I hope this new live show sparks interest in the Pee-Wee franshise and we’ll finally get those new films that Paul has been promising us for years!

  • tom in atlanta

I too was a fan of Paul’s relentless innovation. And I too do not live in LA. You know, this would be a perfect thing for the new Leno show to feature in the same way as Letterman features Broadway cast performances. Listening, Jay Leno Show segment producers?????
