I think it’s the last awards show for logistical reasons, isn’t it? It has the most voters, so in terms of counting and processing ballots, first to get the nominees, then to get the winner, that takes time. The release calendar is structured now so the big Oscar contenders are pushed into November and December, with studios hoping to making money off of Oscar buzz. The Toronto Film Festival as well as Venice, which are considered two of the biggies in terms of studios launching their Oscar push, are in September. And you can’t push Oscar films into the summer because the screens are filled with too many blockbusters, so exhibitors won’t show them. Practically speaking, I don’t think the Academy can air them any earlier than February, really.
New Year’s Eve! and everyone would watch it and then the ball coming down in Times Square, literally uniting the entire country! Plus -just for fun move it to a different venue-like the Hollywood Bowl!
Who give a crap about any of the awards shows. They are all superfical load of bull $%!%. Didn’t she say that in the interview. Why not do something that would actually make a difference. They wear clothes that cost more than my home, and more than I make in three years. They should take the money they would have spent on a “nice” dress, and buy a used one off of someone for the same amount.
Meryl has not won any award since Sophie’s Choice because she is never measured against other actors. SHe is measured against herself and herself alone. I want to see that action movie and I’m one with her in having the Academy Award in January. What a gem Meryl really is.
We should also move the Superbowl to the start of the football season. Gotta love Meryl, but I’m with the disagreers here.
PS – It’s kahuna.
Save the best for last? If the Oscar’s moved up it would complicate things since it is for movies released between Jan 1st and Dec 31st of the previous year. We already have all the award movies at the end of the year and you need voting time for the Oscars.
Meryl Streep should of won for Out of Africa, A Cry in the Dark, The Bridges of Madison County, Doubt, and probably, The Devil Wears Prada and Adaptation.
She should of been nominated for The Manchurin Candidate and The Hours.
Yes, the fact that Hillary Swank and Jodie Foster have both won two best actresses oscars, while Meryl only has one is a travesty.
But the real travesty is the Katherun Hepburn won four oscars for basically playing Katherun Hepburn.
Hollywood does not really appreciate talent.
i agree with the wise and venerable miss meryl streep. if the oscars came in first, the whole studio calendar for film releases would change —the really good films are spread out throughout the year and not crowded in december, when academy voters hardly have time to watch their screeners because they are nursing their holiday hang-overs. as it is, spring and summer releases are completely forgotten by the time the oscar ballots are filled. so the oscar awards are hardly representative of the past year’s achievements, only those of the last 2 months preceding it.
The Oscars has become a joke; spread it out, try to be kind to all and leave heavyweights like Meryl Streep on equal par with those who look up to her.
The sooner the Oscar people could figure out a way to acknowledge Meryl Streep’s all-time genious at the same time, be generous to younger and dead actresses as well, they’ll start striking the right balance to lure many of us back to their one night-out of patronising fake orgasms.
She should have won over Katharine Hepburn (81), Shirley MacLaine (83), Jodie Foster (88), Susan Sarandon (95), and Catherine Zeta-Jones (02). For the other one I think that the winners deserved it more. If the Oscars showed how many votes each nominee got, I bet she came second in 81, 85, 95, 02, 06, and 08. Maybe even 78, 83, and 88. She is the best.
Meryl Streep should have won many more times than she has. But in the hearts and minds of true movie goers she wins each and every time she is on the screen. I love that she is finally getting the press and attention she deserves. I encourage everyone to go back and look , rent or buy previous performances that maybe got little attention. Prime is hysterical–Marvins Room is terrific as she shares the screen with Diane Keaton and one of the films which got little attention is the pre-WWII movie, Dancing at Laughnasa–which is wonderful.
I gave up on the Oscars when Hollywood gave up on making original movies —for adults.
