Some people may not be very excited about the forthcoming Scream movie (or, more specifically, about the decision to include Courteney Cox and David Arquette), but a few of us here at EW actually are. Hi, that’s me! And hark! There’s news out about how, exactly, the reboot is going to take shape.
The most important thing to know about the Scream reboot is that it’s not just one new flick that creator Kevin Williamson is writing — actually, as we reported back in June, he’s got Bob Weinstein and Dimension to sign on for an entire new trilogy! Speaking at the TCA press tour in L.A., Williamson said initially he “wasn’t interested” in doing the reboot, but then he thought “a trilogy — now I’d be interested!” Actually, same goes for me. A trilogy does make the most sense — no need to drag on the story line that was wrung dry in the first three movies. And as long as the moviemakers don’t treat this as some ugly stepchild and banish it to a direct-to-DVD release before it’s even made, I think there is potential for Scream to return to pop culture prominence. Er, hopefully?
Williamson went on to say that it’s a totally new trilogy that’ll feature Gale Weathers (Cox) and Deputy Dewey (Arquette) — so there is some continuity — and that it’ll take place 10 years later. Which, really, makes about perfect sense, seeing as how the last flick, Scream 3, was released in 2000. The first of the new Scream flicks won’t be able to begin filming until next year at the absolute earliest, so it likely won’t be out until very late 2010 or 2011.
So, anyway, PopWatchers, are you excited about the impending return of Scream? Is a trilogy the right way to go for the reboot? Does bringing Scream back even have a chance of succeeding? If the new trilogy had cameos from original stars, who would you like to see back? Neve Campbell, maybe?

How much more can be done with the series?
The 1st movie was great and I actually thought the 3rd one had some great scares in it. It was the weak plots and the Scooby Doo endings that did the series in. Now, if they are going to do a trilogy, they need to refrain from telling us who the killer is until the 3rd film and they need to plot the overall arc like a mystery/thriller. Each episode needs to bring the Cox-Arquette characters closer to solving the mystery of “who” the killer is while the individual story for each film will be about drunk high school kids getting slaughtered.
ummmmm….if there is no neve campbell then there will be no scream! I thought it would kind of be a reboot of a group of teens being terrorized again but if Gayle and Dewey…they are too old. Unless they get killed in the very beginning like Drew Barrymore!
Scream is my favorite horror movie of all time, bring it on!
I’m not really that excited. If Wes Craven returns as director maybe I’ll become more excited, but I still sort of wish that they would jest let the franchise rest in peace. I kind of was hoping for Craven to get a chance to do a third Nightmare film to complete the proposed trilogy he had in mind, no instead they had to remake that movie, which doesn’t need it as it stands up well 25 years later. And as for Scream, I love Neve Campbell as an actress and her character from the first three movies too much to want to see her character in any more danger. I am afraid that if Neve chooses to not even come back for the whole duration of the film, that then in a cameo they are going to kill her character off. As a way to show that anything goes in this new trilogy. And if that happens who in terms of horror movie heroines is really going to be left for young girls who watch horror and slasher films to look up to? Neve Campbell’s character was a strong female character and if Williamson kills her off what was the point of her surviving the first three films, if only to kill her off in an unplanned sequel? I think this was a case where a reboot should have been the way to go and not a sequel, the original movies said and did about all they could say with the material they had and it would have been better to let a new director and a new writer have a crack at the premise and see what they could have come up with. Now that might have been interesting.
so psyched for this, hurry up already!
Only if they unearth a hidden video of Jamie Kennedy talking about “the rules of a reboot.”
I LOVE SCREAM! I have been waiting for them to do this for the longest time-mainly because Kevin Williamson (due to scheduling conflicts, I think he was directing Killing Mrs Tingle) did not get to write the last installment of the trilogy-Ehren Kruger did-and I always felt slighted! I loved the series and I knew that in Williamson’s hands that last installment would have been drastically different! I enjoyed parts of Scream 3, but not as a whole, and not as a movie connected to the first two, which were superb! SO to see just what it is he will be doing with these next three, and with some of the characters returning, I will really be looking forward to that! I hope he does get Neve Campbell to come back, because I always loved her plight in the whole thing-here is a girl who never asked for this life, but got it-first losing her mother, then her friends, and all because of her! I loved that, because these days with high schoolers killing each other and whole families being murdered by another family member, you can actually imagine this happening. And it’s interesting to me to see how it can affect a person-I always felt so bad for Sydney but loved her whole strength and will to fight back. For her to think it is over, and then have it all come flying back at her 10 years later, would be very interesting! I do not want to see a whole new group of whiny teens however-we’ve been seeing that in every horror movie since! Now is Kevin Williamson’s chance to reinvent the genre once again, like he did with the first Scream! And I am excited to see him do this! OH-and I think he should cast me! LOL! Dying to be a part of it!
The original Scream trilogy, even at it’s weakest moments (and there were several) is still stronger than 90% of the horror films released. I eagerly anticipate the new films. As to whether or not it will be best as a trilogy, that question cannot be answered without hindsight or at least seeing the first film. If there is a great script and a good cast, I would want more. If they start to destroy my love for the franchise, I would want them to stop prior to the 5th and 6th films. Only time will tell.
I love, love, loved the first two screams when they came out. The third one, while highly anticipated, was a major letdown. Neve Campbell was a big part of the attraction to the movie. Hopefully she can come back some how.
I don’t know, Nee Nee, how much cultural crap has happened in the last 10 years that could be meta-sized, parodied, deconstructed and ridiculed? Oh yeah, 10 years worth of crap. Bring it on!
My first thought when I heard about this was that they better bring back Neve Campbell. Now, I’m torn. If they bring her back, I think they’d just be beating a dead horse with the story line. They need something fresh and new. On the other hand, we’ve been devoid of Neve Campbell for too long. She needs to come back!
Let’s get our terms straight. Reboot is starting over from the beginning. This doesn’t sound like that.
You know I’m excited about the new Scream! I don’t care if it sucks, it will still be aaa-mazing!
I enjoyed the scream movies and the 1st one is one of my favorite horror movies 2 things thougth 1.neve campbell, the reporter, and the cop need to die and 2 they need to look for good actors to continue the seris instead of thinking that people only wanna see scream and not good actors like they ofen do in friday the 13th movies and even thougth it sometimes works with jason vorhes i know a copycat scream killer could never pull it off (im more excited for a remake of Wes Craven better nigthmare on elm street in hopefully 2010)
