As someone who read anne rice at 13 starting with lestat and an avid reader. I love lkh, christine feehan dark series, charlaine harris,Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden Series There are vampires in this series also PLUS JAMES MARSTERS READS THE AUDIO BOOKS. I am dissapointed that Spike, Angel,Dru ,Darla or Vamp Willow are not on the list. I have read blood ties way before the series came out. I tried to read twilight could not get thought it . I have read rachel caines vamp series Morganville for teens as well as kim harrison’s madison avery series .There also is Richelle Mead’s Vampire Acadamy and of couse the Tulsa Ok Centered Vanp series by Mother/Daughter Team PC Cast and Kristin Cast House of Night Series. Folkes I have respect For authors that can go in between teen and adult ,But If Blade is Mentioned Then Hellsing NOT VAN HELSSING BUT HELLSING THE MANGA/OVA/Anime written by Kouta HIRANO taking it back to Stoker with dracula/ALUCARD and the van helsing family with a japanese twist A great twist just the same. If you put a search for vampire books on amaazon or barnes or books a million you will come up with many author’s some good some not so good Apolgies to the twilght fans But I love Joss Whedon’s Buffy and Angel. Also Folkes I have Read Anita Blake and Merry Gentry since the beginning What lkh did is to make her Series much more urban that rice or stoker Anita and Merry are very much set in the now an alternative reality but the now just the same. I love the blue bloods saga for teens as well by mellisa de la cruz . Ladies and Gentlemen Twilight is not the be all end all of everything vampire there is alot of good writing that need to be recognized and maybe optioned to make a movie or tv series instead of rehashing the past. It is not fun To see a film being remade when it was released 20+ years ago sorry tangent

LOL @ the jealousy pouring out from Laurell K. Hamilton. While I am not a fan of the Twilight books, Laurell can learn something from Stephenie and that is that you do not need to have sex in every single chapter of your book in order to sell it. Laurell claims that when she added sex scenes in her books, the sales went up. Well Twilight is not soft core porn like the Anita Blake novels and has sold much, much more than all of Laurell’s 30 something books combined. She didn’t pioneer anything. Anne Rice is the pioneer of the contemporary vampire novel.

Bella Swan is not a strong character. Is it normal to feel sad after a breakup? Yes, but not enough to jump off a cliff in an attempt to hear a hallucination.
I hate how Twilight fans always say, “IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, DON’T READ IT!” but if we don’t read it, they scream, “BUT YOU HAVE TO READ THEM BEFORE YOU JUDGE THEM!”
Newsflash, Twilight fans, most anti-Twilight people DID read them, and we still hated them.
    How do you argue that?

LKH is a meglomaniac plain and simple. In her own mind she is a genius who is bringing a wonder-woman like deity to us in the form of her literary avatar Anita Blake.
Anita Blake is one of the WORST examples humanly (or otherwise) possible of what a woman should strive to be.

str8 up: twilight sucks, its about a whiny little bitch, who well-whines- about how much she loves, what is possibly the lamest vampire ever. now, anne rice, is in my opinion at least, the master in the field, her books are told in such a great way…even those apart from the chronicles, the mayfair witches series is just as good and scarier.

I think each of these authors and the way they write will appeal to each person in their own way. Either you will like it or hate it but the fact is that Vampires have always caught the worlds attention and Vampires are all about seduction and violence. For the young ones it will be romantic for us long time Vamp followers it will be about romance with a little smut and that thrill kill in the end. Each author will add his/her own twist to the Vamp genre. If you read L.A. Banks Vampire Huntress Legend it is about a African-American slayer with a tale of the battle of good and evil beginning from the garden of eden with a touch of Buffy’s a Vamp with a Soul and some sex in it as well(but isn’t that what vamps main goal is pleasure). Her story also links different cultures and how we all have a special gift to contribute to save the world from final days. The Twilight series is meant for who it is appealing to now which is the tweens and with them having access to sooo much drugs, sex and rock and roll a little romance won’t hurt them and for us grown ups we have a choice, if it is too much sex in a book for you….return it sell it stop reading and find one a little more tame.

ok ok ok……. true blood is awesome!!! twilight is awesome (including the books)!!! laurell k hamiltons books are awesome!!! but sorry anne rice will forever have the vampire genre on lock because she has yet to be surpassed!!!! BAMMMM!!!

I am disappointed that you left out the Vampire Huntress Legend series by L.A. Banks from your article. Hopefully, the fact that this exceptional series is written by a woman of color is not the reason for the oversight, especially since HBO spent considerable time interviewing her in their Vampire author/movies,etc. genre program. Ms. Banks puts an exciting, original and diverse twist on vampires and those that hunt them. In fact other authors like Charlaine Harris, and Sherrilyn Kenyon have remarked on the excellence of her series. Hopefully in the future your research into this genre will be more inclusive.

Here here! Banks is amazing and if anyone deserves to have a movie or tv series, her characters do!

  • jodi

    not possible

I’m pretty certain that LKH thinks she pioneered the modern vampire detective story.

And her books are certainly NOT for children since they have numerous full detailed rape scenes and bondage sex.
