Lucky Comic-Con-goers today got a look at the pilotfor ABC's V, a retelling of the 1980s sci-fi miniseries about a mysteriousalien invasion that purports to come in peace. The packed ballroom keptthe enthusiasm in check for most of the pilot, save an initial cheerfor Elizabeth Mitchell's butt-kicking skills as an FBI agent and theappearance of Morena Baccarin, aka the gorgeous actress who plays Anna, the high commander of the alien species. Afterwards, there wasn't muchtime for the stars to talk about the CG-heavy pilot (and yep, the spaceships look pretty legit) — though Mitchell admitted to loving the oldminiseries and how she still remembers the "alien babies" (for more onhow Mitchell will balance her new role on V and any loose ends she mayor may not have to tie up in Lost, read more here).

Fans were particularly thrilled to see Alan Tudyk (Firefly and Dollhouse) playing Mitchell's FBI partner, while exec producer ScottPeters says the references to contemporary topics (like universalhealth care) were more than just coincidental (the aliens offer freehealth care for all, among other frightening things). "Wouldn't it benice if 29 ships showed up to say, 'We'll help'?" he said.

V, which also stars Scott Wolf (Party of Five) as aTV journalist who snags the first interview with Anna, debuts inNovember on ABC.

From what I’ve seen, V is shaping up to be a not too subtle anti-Obama message. That might turn a portion of the audience off.

Amazing the first thing that goes in a totalitarian regime is Freedom of the Press. That Liberals are whinning that a TV show is questioning the problems associated w/ “Univeral” healthcare, shows Fascism is alive & a growing force in our Country under this “Charismatic” ruler. Wow, we didn’t learn our lesson w/past Elected officials, foreign dictators, etc. Already the Obama fascists will not grant ANY interviews or personal access to the FOX News Network. Why, they are objective, and don’t kotow to this regime.

Because Fox is not a News station.Do you watch any other news station or even read to not be aware of this by now?

      • riley

to call Fox New objective is a laugh- are you sure you even know what objective means?

What I want to know is there another Lizard baby in this version.

I think there’s a vast difference between being “anti-Obama” and simply saying “be discerning about placing anyone on a pedestal – think for yourself”. In that sense, if it’s anti-Obama, then it’s anti-religion too… and, while I’d welcome the latter ideal, it would be even more of a turn off to the American public. I dare say it’ll throw many themes out there and let the audience decide what it means.

I’m one of those people that got turned off with the anti-Obama subtext in the trailer, so I’m not surprised to hear about additional hamhandedness from this Scott Peters guy. (I especially like how they completely miss the irony of the preacher being the skeptic.) I understand his last series had a strong anti-government thread going thru it as well, so chances are we’re looking at another Joel Surnow here. Way to ruin a beloved franchise.

This has been done! “V” was done! RIP! So why is ABC doing it again? Aren’t there any television writers out there with an ounce of imagination and creativity willing to do original science fiction? Well, I guess not!

You people need to stop worrying about being overly obsessed with Hollywood and what happens there. If the same people enamored with Hollywood celebrities would pay as much attention to what their Congressman was doing in Washington this country would not have most of the problems it finds itself in today. I do not care what subject matter anyone wants to address this obsession with Hollywood needs to subside in order to get a healthy country again.

  • To Paul

Then what are YOU doing on an entertainment website? Does it have to be one or the other, can’t somebody keep up with Hollywood AND Washington?

I have never really gone with the “this show is anti-obama”, this show is obviously against bush. I just want to watch a good television show. Sure, sometimes the subtext makes it better. Look at BSG. But in their case, they hit on both sides of the aisle which is the kind of show I like. I speak for most people who just want good tv. If its anti-obama a little, so be it. I am smart enough to make my own decisions about how the country is being run. I don’t need a television show to make a judgement for me.

I am inclined to check it out purely for the cast, we’ll see where it goes from there.

The problem is that the eighties finished off what mid seventies television began: cheesy action shows and evening soaps with pure unadulterated camp. Now since we have been subjected to normal and intelligent shows like Law and Order and ER, we want more. V was part of the cheese phenomenon. Knight Rider failed, Bionic Woman failed, and Night Stalker failed to reboot. BattleStar did not, but people forgot that the original version with Dirk Benedict only lasted a season and a half. The new version was on a cable network and managed to pull off what Star Trek did: Have an original show that got cancelled, but have other versions that were not. I do not have any hope for V, but you never know.

So, it would have been OK to have an anti-(anyone but Obama) theme, but anti-Obama is off limits?

    • walla037

Exactly. How many TV shows threw in overt anti-Bush barbs during the previous administration? I’m pretty sure nobody worried then about turning a portion of the audience off.

Can we please not turn EVERYTHING into a political debate? This is about GREEN LIZARDS from OUTERSPACE! It has NOTHING TO DO WITH AMERICAN POLITICS! Get off the Politico website–news junkie :)
