The world has heard its last perfect "Dddiiiiii heard that": Les Lye, who played Barth (among dozens of other characters) on You Can't Do That On Television, died Tuesday in Ottawa. He was 84.
I feel like my whole heart just got slimed, PopWatchers. I'm not the only one who loved YCDTOTV, am I? Other people fear the repercussions of saying "I don't know," right?

“Where do they find these people, and why do they keep sending them to me?”
He will be missed…
LOVED that show! I always wanted to be in the locker sketch!
Great show! I used to love the Barth’s Burgers sketches. They were so gross!
Did you just get slimed? I always wondered when I was younger, why didn’t they just say water after wards to get the slime off.
I loved that show, too!
Alanis Morrisette and Moose were the bes part of that show.
Wow–84? That makes me feel old. I had such a mega crush on Alistair.
I can’t believe he was that old… he will definitely be missed. (And I, too, had a crush on Alastair…)
You’re certainly not the only one! I was just giving my kids a “history of ‘getting slimed’” lesson just the other day and of course cited this show.
I remember when Alanis broke out in the music world, and fans of the show were so excited. I always loved Locker Jokes…
But thanks for posting this news and this video. Rest In Peace, Les Lye.
Hooray! He’s dead!
(This must be the introduction to the opposite sketch!)
In all seriousness though, I loved this show, so RIP Les Lye….any chance the show is out on DVD or on Hulu?
Another kid who watched it
my God I LOVED that show… I wish they would release it on DVD
I also loved that show back in the day. I had forgotten a lot of the regular skits/catchphrases. Thanks to many of the other posters here for making me smile.
One of my favorite shows on Nick as a kid. RIP Barth.
@Winona OMG I had a crush on Alastair too.
Alistair and Adam were cuties. Lye was very funny. I am sorry to hear of his passing, and yeah YCDTOT should be released on DVD.
Great show that I had completely forgotten about. He’ll be missed.
I was fairly young, but watched YCDTOTV religiously. Anyone else remember Freshmen, and Fifteen?
On my…I watched this show all the time…I was in LOVE with Allister. I remember that my best friend was not allowed to watch it so she would come over to my house to
Mary, I TOTALLY remember Fifteen!!! Ryan Reynolds was on it, even though I hated his char…wasn’t he a twin or something with that pale blond hair girl??
Water!
@Kate – my thoughts exactly!! Loved all the regulars, but Moose was always my role model

Never heard of him, therefore, he is deemed irrelevant. Romney-Palin in 2012! It WILL happen.

As Zilch on the show, I was able to spend a lot of time with Les and he was such a genuine person, a gentleman and one of the funniest men I have ever had the good fortune of knowing. He will be greatly missed.
I loved this show. RIP Les.
Very sad. RIP Mr. Lye.
God I loved that show when I was a kid. Kevin & Alastair… *swoons*
Wait, we have Les’s nephew (Martin Lye) and Darryll Lucas (Zilch) posting here?
Margaret Lyons and EW — can you say “Special Popwatch ‘You Can’t Do That On Television’ Reunion Interview Series?” I’d LOVE to hear about the show….
And Martin, while I made the “Opposite Sketch” joke, please realize it came out of sincere appreciation for your uncle’s work on this integral show to my childhood.
Anyone remember Barth’s “Ice Cream $0.25″ sketch? You would give him a quarter, and he would scream. I miss that show.
How the heck has it been that long that he was now 84? Did that show come out in the 40s or something? Geez.
RIP Les. You always had the best parts on the show.
