Jon Stewart: America's most trusted news anchor?

Jon-stewart_l Jon Stewart has certainly come a long way from hosting Short Attention Span Theater: A Time Magazine online poll shows that 44 percent of Americans trust The Daily Show host over network hotshots Katie Couric, Charlie Gibson, and Brian Williams (the runner-up with 29 percent). The results are especially shocking when you go state-by-state. Who would've guessed, for example, that Arkansans (59 percent pro-McCain in the 2008 election) would be such enthusiastic Stewartists, with 63 percent of respondents citing this guy as their go-to source for information about the world?Stewart gets my vote, too, if only because he doesn't have to compete in the big-three ratings war that often seems to turn network news into a three-ring circus. But what about you, PopWatchers? Who do you turn to for news?

I think he can be the most trusted, but you should definitely watch “real news” too.
I love the Daily Show, but they are a comedy show. Jon would say it himself.
So with a balance, he is I agree.
I love his interview this week with Brian Williams.
“How does it feel to fall so short”

Adam – Are you kidding me?
There is no ‘real news’ on network broadcasting.
It’s why a comedian can win a poll like this…and deservingly so.

I still get my news from the traditional sources, but I get my perspective ON the news from Jon Stewart. He is definitely at the top of his game right now.

Bear in mind that he was the most trusted anchor among Arkansians who chose to vote in an online poll on the Time Magazine website…it’s not exactly a perfect cross-section of society. Then again, being British, I watch The Daily Show every day while the only thing I have ever seen Katie Couric do is her interview with Sarah Palin and I have never seen either of the others report anything. So I can’t deny that most of my US-related news comes from Stewart (then again, all of my knowledge of the American legislative process comes from The West Wing, so I’m not exactly a model of political nous)

I love Jon Stewart, but he’s not a reporter. He’s a media commentator, talking about the news OTHER people are reporting. I trust him to cut through the B.S. of the news media, but not to report the truth about the news.

the other side of the BS is exactly where the truth lies.

  • Bobby’s Robot

It may be a comedy show, but it still gets to the bottom of stories like no ‘real’ news outlet. TV journalism has become an embarrassment.

  • Sydney Bristow

I trust him above the others. I don’t watch “real” news anymore. FOX is one way, MSNBC is the other and CNN hasn’t completely made up its mind yet. Besides, Stewart is fun to watch. He is my number one news source.

    He rocks..

  • barock

He’s funny, but he’s really just Obama’s Himmler

News Anchor are you serious he is great at what he does but calling him a news anchor is crazy. He is funny at what he does though.
What next Colbert is the 2nd most trusted? Lay off the crack pipe!!!!

  • Dave

I definitely trust him to report on the other reporters, and to help keep the “real” news organizations as honest as possible.
Also, he (and Colbert) are the only ones on TV really interviewing writers and scientists and other experts who get ignored in the media.

I just want to point out that seems to be pretty liberal in general, so I don’t know how reliable that poll is. Also, someone or a group of people in Iowa seem to be playing with the numbers, because there are always 80-100 votes for whatever is least popular overall on a given day. I don’t consider Jon Stewart a newscaster, either, although I watch every show.

  • Dave

He’s a comedian that does bits on news events. That’s it. He’s funny, but certainly not a news anchor. The poll only shows that people believe anything they see on TV. Noone is more biased than Stewart.

  • jason

See what he did to Jim Cramer. That was brilliant. The other three would never have done that.

  • Skooter

Jon Stewart is an embarrassment, not even very funny.

  • jason

Watch what he did to Jim Cramer. That was brilliant and entertaining at the same time. The other three would never have done that.
