Paul McCartney plays Citi Field: He's still got it

Last night, Paul McCartney hit the New York Mets' Citi Field and jammed for two hours, becoming the first musical act to play at the brand-new stadium. When he played at the Mets' former home, Shea Stadium, in 1965, he also similarly helped christen that ballpark for rock concerts as a frenzy of teens went wild for the Beatles.

Amongst his 30-song set last night was everything from recent work (like "Sing The Changes") to Beatles masterpieces. And, from this video below and reports from some of the 55,000 who attended the rain-soaked show, the legend's rendition of Fab Four hit "Let it Be" was more than memorable. Enjoy it here:

I never tire of that song. What do you think, PopWatchers? Does Paul still have it? Was he an appropriate inaugural musical act for Citi Field? Were you there?

Was hoping (and shocked) not to get a McCartney on Letterman PopWatch, since that was the biggest water cooler moment in recent memory around me. So I’ll just do it myself, since I couldn’t be at this show. It was a great hour of Dave, complete with Bruce Willis Top 10 topped with a No. 1 that explained he did the list just to meet McCartney. A great interview with Dave and Paul in which we got some great info, whether it be on the early Beatles or how he and Michael Jackson drifted away. Not to mention some amazing music performances on the roof in front of thousands of onlookers. I’m sure Citi Field was memorable, but McCartney’s return to Ed Sullivan Theater via Dave? Priceless.

I was at the show last night, it was my 3rd time seeing paul live, and he was simply incredible .. at 67, his vocals are still strong and hes rocking as hard as he did 40 years ago … whether he’s on hofner bass, lead guitar, or piano, he brings the audience to their feet and knows how to work the crowd .. playing nearly 3 hours including encores, tributes to george and john, and a guest appearance by billy joel, it was an amazing experience… if you get the chance to see him play, do it, paul’s one of the last chances to see a beatle.

Yeah how was McCartey on Letterman not properly covered by EW?
And yes he’s still got it.

Saw him last week in Halifax and it was awesome! I had no real intentions of going but scored a ticket last minute just off the recommendation of a friend who had seen him play a few years back. It was 2.5 hours of music & entertainment & just plain old fun! The weather was perfect and the music was even better! When he turned Let It Be & Hey Jude over to the crowd? I had chills!

I saw Sir Paul last night at the second Citifield concert, and man was he incredible! His vocals were great, his playing was amazing, and he sounded as good as he did 40 years ago. The best concert I’ve ever seen…he’s definitely still got it!

Saw him last night! There aren’t words to describe how amazing he is! The greatest concert I have ever been to! I’m 21 and I feel so lucky to have had a chance to see a Beatle (who’s solo work is stellar as well) up close still rocking after all these years!

During the letterman show, I think that was the first time that Dave was nervous having a guest on his how. Whatever Dave asked Paul was ready with an answer or quip. Oh yeah Paul can still get it done!!

Attended the concert last night (Tuesday) Unbelievable! Better than I could have imagined it would be. Unfortunately, we got to Citi Field early and had to be subjected to horrible, horrible pre show music in the stadium. With all of the great music of the 60’s that they could have played, we were forced to listen to music of the 30’s and 40’s and then some annoying unbearable static- sounding- noise!! I would like to know who was responsible for that! (If you wee there by 6:30, you know what I mean) In any case, Paul was great—it was the best show I’ve ever seen.

I’ve seen Paul many times. He just keeps getting better. I was at the concert at Citi Field on July 21 with my son. He enjoyed the concert as much as I did. Paul was incredible.
