When a headline that reads “Not As Bad As You Think” starts counting as good news, then you know things have gotten low. That’s what Cinemablend.com wrote yesterday regarding G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, a movie that’s had its share of bad press including erroneous news reports (debunked by EW) that costar Sienna Miller had to wear fake boobs in the movie. Cinemablend points out that, bad buzz aside, some early Internet reviews, particularly from Ain’t It Cool News, suggest that the movie might be all right after all. What do you think PopWatchers? Are you going to see G.I. Joe? Has the backlash to the backlash begun?

I had issues that they would not be referred to as “Real American Heroes” and be a multi-national group but once I moved on from that I never understood what the fuss was about. Unless the mess with Cobra Commander’s mask.
I want to see “Not As Bad As You Think” on the poster and the DVD when it comes out, along with other effusive praise like “There Are Worse Ways to Spend 100 Minutes” and “This’ll Be Pretty Good on FX Two Years From Now.”
With quality summer entertainment like “Up” and “Harry Potter”, why would anybody waste their money on a movie like this?
Not everyone likes Harry Potter. And up wasn’t all that great either.
Up was a fabulous movie. It puts live action movies to shame. You probably didn’t care for it because it wasn’t lame or filled with useless action scenes. I may actually see this crappy GI Joe movie because it is so mindless. Plus, lots of eye candy in this for women to enjoy.
I will watch it as a long time fan of the series. But the trailer really isn’t doing it for me. It looks aweful. Hopefully I will be surprised!
I try not to judge until I see a movie, but just based on the trailer, it looks like a Transformers ripoff. Every action sequence looks exactly like the action sequences in the first Transformers. I don’t mind a film being a tad cheesy, but at least be unique. The acting looks really bad too.
Ceballos, RFLMAO!!
i WANNA SEE IT!
GI Joe fan from a very early age. will see it no matter what reviewers or even other fans say.
Hey, Transformers 2 is the very definition of a bad movie, but it is making incredible bank, so who knows anymore.
It is a Stephen Sommers movie, he along with his ilk (Mcg and Bret Ratner particulary) are synonymous with cr*p movies and are the direct descendants of Michael Bay (they make mOvies that are complete sheeyit but still make enough o justify the filmmakers’ existence).
I am looking forward to seeing it. I just hope it’s a little better than Transformers 2.
Joseph Gordon Levitt is in it so , dang right, I’ll see it!
this was one of the only cartoons on television that had an actual plot. i loved it. i used to watch it every morning before school (remember when cartoons used to play in the morning monday-friday…they don’t even do that anymore do they??) i hope this movie isn’t horrible because the cartoon was great.
thoroughly disappointed. i was a long time fan. the only thing good was the CGI. and wasnt cobra commander the coward between him and destro in the series? well they had it totally backwards. it was bad acting, no flow, and they completely ruined the fight scenes. the only folks that will like it are those that have no recolection of the series bro.
I’m sure people are looking for anything to call good after wasting so much time hating TF2. Face it, folks – Transformers 2 is a hit movie people people enjoyed it.
I’m always shocked that people are willing to weigh in on something prior to seeing it. I only care if it’s entertaining. Good/bad are extremley subjective points of view.
And Sienna totally wore fake ones under under her Baroness costume – lol
It just looks so cheesy.
Looks awful. I’m their target demographic too. Watched this and transformers as a child, had all the toys, saw the transformer movies opening weekend, but this looks bad. Kind of reminds me of how the first Pirates movie was good, so they made a haunted mansion movie that was awful. Let me throw it you SAT style: Pirates is to Haunted Mansion as Transformers is to GI Joe.
I don’t know who they think they are kidding. Anyone older then 30 will remember the 80s and should know these cartoons. All it takes is one look at the characters to see whats wrong. Cobra Commander looks nothing like he should (that’s bad), Zartan…one of the coolest characters looks like some basic soldier. Very lame. Just as Transformers is all about getting Optimus Prime and Megatron right (1 out of 2 how I see it), GI Joe’s whole existence will rely on how long and good the fight is between Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes. It has to be A…better than any of the fight scenes in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon…B…be very long and drawn out…and C…shot so it shows off their skills and not do that quick MTV bullshit. If it can’t do that this movie will make a lot but will let all true Joe fans down.
There is always one movie each summer that is suppose to be a blockbuster and it tanks. I figured GI Joe is going to be the one. I’d be shocked if this movie makes more the $100 mil.
I’m still going to see it.
BTW, wouldn’t this be the perfect place for a poll? What’s with the lack of polls on EW.com, everyone loves polls.
as soon as my beloved joseph gordon levitt is on it it can’t be that bad but on the other hand i’m living in paris and WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE EIFFEL TOWER COME ON THIS IS SO NOT COOL!!!!!
I want so much to like this film. I grew up on the GI Joe/Transformers hour and was so psyched for the first Transformers film but it was so disappointing that I won’t pay to go see the second. I might give GI Joe a try but the trailers really haven’t done anything for me. And I truly doubt it will be any better than the recent “GI Joe: Resolute” cartoon – that was freakin’ fantastic!
“Now I know.”
“And knowing is half the battle.”
Yo, Joe!
I grew up on G.I. Joe in the 80’s. I remember as a kid dropping everything we were doing and rushing into the house to watch G.I. Joe everyday. I Had a ton of the figures and toys basically a huge fan. I prayed for the day someone would make a G.I. Joe movie. Now here it is. Yes, I was upset that the “A Real American Hero” title was taken away, but I can live with that. Then I saw the trailer and said to myself “What the hell is this??”, but was still willing to give it a chance. The other day I came across the book, so I picked it up. I am half way through it and I have almost thrown the book away at least 5 times. They have really screwed up what could be a great homage to the G.I. Joe we all remember. Since when is Duke a Captain?? It even says on his file card First Sergeant!! When did him and Ripcord become BFF’s?? The Baroness isn’t from the U.S.A! UGH, they took G.I. Joe and let the studio and some guy who only played with Barbies make a G.I. Joe movie.
I’m going to go cry now.
Didn’t really watch the cartoons much as a kid so I’m not as attached to it as some of the other posters are, but I’m looking at the movie as nothing more than a summer blockbuster at the moment, whther it suceeds in being one or not. I will be going to see it, if only because I want another action movie to be seen around the chick flicks, children’s movies and romantic comedies I have on my plate this summer.
I think maybe the 30 and up crowd is missing the point. We’re not the demographic, just like Star Wars wasn’t targeted at 30 year old guys when I, II, and III came out. They’re trying to sell GI Joe merch to a whole new generation. Go to the store and look at the new Joe figures; not our Joes (they look like ‘roid pumping ironfreaks); not our movie. Take your nephew or your son and let him enjoy it.
Channing Tatum in an army uniform. Sold! (That was the only reason I saw “Stop-Loss” and it’s the only reason I’ll see this.)
This movie will probably be terrible, but I would actually pay to see Christopher Eccleston on the big screen, even if it’s for five minutes. Grrrowl.
Im a fan of Rachel Nichols who plays Scarlett so I’ll go see it.

Omg people stop crying already. The movie isn’t out yet and tards are doggin it. You haters should just go read a book. Gi joe rules.
Gi joe rules, all you haters need to go watch oprah or soccer.
I think this is going to be a disappointment over all. I see a great deal of potential similarities between this G.I. Joe film and the live action Street Fighter movie from years ago with Raul Julia. There was a great animated Street Fighter film that came out around the same time and I still can’t figure out why they just didn’t use the same material from the animated film for the live action. How could two films about the same subject be so different? If you have seen the recent “G.I. Joe Resolute” animated film you may know what I am talking about. “G.I. Joe Resolute” is a great film! There is no reason the live action movie couldn’t follow it’s example. It was a great story with a mature edge while still sticking to what made G.I. Joe so popular. If you haven’t seen “G.I. Joe Resolute” yet please look it up on Youtube or something. It will repair the damage that “Rise of Cobra” will no doubt do to your soul.
