Like many other theater-goers, when I attended a screening of Brüno, I expected to witness cringe-worthy scenes that exposed the homophobic tendencies of an overly machismo American society. And for the most part, I got what I expected. But something I didn’t quite forsee: enough full-frontal male nudity to make Jason Segal’s Forgetting Sarah Marshall nude scene look G-rated. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. In fact, I found the shock humor to be quite effective, and I laughed right along with my fellow audience members until the end credits rolled.
But I have a feeling not every Brüno watcher felt the same way, ja? Am I in the minority or the majority here? Take our poll (heh-heh, I said ‘poll’) to find out!

you left out one box — YES, but stayed (was with someone) — why wasn’t this NC-17 or Unrated? MUCH worse than The Aristrocrats and it was released Unrated (and I ENJOYED that film). Am not homophobic (best friend is gay) – but this movie was too much and NOT funny except for a few moments (liked when he called Mel Gibson – The Fuhrer).
I agree. You did leave out a box. I wanted to walk out but was with someone, so I stayed. I still think the movie was a bit much and have told everyone I know to stay away from it. In fact, I’m getting shocked looks when people find out that I went to see the movie. Loved Borat, but Bruno, not so much at all.
Apparently by asking this question, you’ve totally missed one of the points of the movie. Why is it never anything when we see nude women on the screen, but as soon as a guy turns up, people go nuts (no pun intended)? Asking this just perpetuates the hypocrisy.
I would argue the exact opposite… when have you seen a vagina in a move?
Not that I’m prudish. I did enjoy the movie very much from start to finish. However, the really naughy bits (pun intended) didn’t add to the movie, and could’ve been omitted or served more tastefully for better results.
Sorry, but in the age of 2Girls1Cup, a few wagging penises on screen is hardly shocking.
I went to see this movie with my husband and another couple. I thought the movie was very funny and laughed out loud a lot! Was this movie a movie you absolutely had to see in the theatre? I would say no. Was this movie better than Borat? I would say yes. I liked the fact that it was much less cringeworthy than Borat. Cohen really pushes the envelope with this character and the best part of this movie is to see just how far he will push it. I still laugh to myself when I think back to certain parts!(no pun intended) It was just so outrageous! But in a good way!
THIS IS A PEICE OF TRASH…PLAIN AND SIMPLE..
I am pretty proud to be a part of the “Never seen and never will” category on this one. The culture is winning! We must. LOL.
He really wouldn’t bother me so much if I didn’t know he was some Brit-Ivy type of guy who seemed to be patronizing the rest of us with his faux-Andy Kaufman provocations shredding all the people one can assume he deems himself smarter than. That’s just…Meh. I don’t hate him, just can’t be bothered to consume his stuff.
Not planning on seeing it until the DVD and even then, maybe not. Don’t find his shtick all that funny (much like Ben Stiller, I’ll chuckle here and there, but knee slapping HAHAHA not no much) One of my friends went to see it and said it’s Borat all over again with a fag instead of a fob (and least any of you take offense with that discription, we’re both gay)
I walked out — not because I was offended, but because I found it totally unfunny and unentertaining.
The entire show are of course staged, including the sex scenes… Sasha did it again by showing the world how homophobic view gays – They view gay people in term of sex and odd sex. There are intelligent, non sex-crazed, vanilla gays out there. I don’t think this movie helps or hurt general gays. It reaffirm bigots of their views and give good laughs to those who are educated about gay people. Bruno is frivolous.. it’s not like Borat..
I must admit, parts of it was unsettling, but I still laugh..and laughed hard.. All and all though, it’s still very disturbing and offensive. The more I think about it, the less funny it became. Don’t bring your kids to it.. It’s way too disturbing…It makes fun of a gay model who’s life evolve around odd sex, self indulgence, and loath…
Honestly all the prudes who are complaining need to seriously lighten up.
You are all republican haters!
No different that John Waters’ movies 30 years ago. These kind of movies are not for everybody, but some of us love them. We get the joke.
Frankly I find it offensive that someone would compare my masterpiece work of postmodern art to this hacks lame skits dragged out to feature length. Sacha, postmodern artiste to artiste, take a tip from my work: Keep it short and sweet and repeat it over and over, ad infinitum.
People need to lighten up. It’s male genitalia…it won’t blind you (unless you misuse that is)

I thought it was generally hilarious and involuntarily clapped several times throughout. I was a bit scared at the end during the wrestling bit…how did he get out of there alive?!
Ben Stiller used to be the unfunniest comedian(?) around until Will Ferrell came to the forefront of non-humor. He has successfully passed the torch to this extremely unfunny person. Blah.
This is NOT a movie to take your kids to. Please be warned.
I am neither prudish, a homophobe nor Republican, and even I thought it often went too far. I loved Borat, but this one was just flat ridiculous. I’d say it was 3% hilarious, 20% amusing and 77% for-shock-value-only raunch. Basically, most of it was positively asinine. I was disappointed.
Borat was in his own way loveable, if only for his hopeless cultural ignorance. There was somewhat of a heart underneath it all, ya know? Whereas Brüno is a self-absorbed clown with scant redeeming quality. The only laughs were derived from making the audience feel awkward. In my book that’s not humor; it’s desperation.
Carey, thank you for making a great point. Borat was a likable character I didn’t mind spending an hour and a half with, but Bruno seems like an *ssh*le that I have no interest in getting to know. I won’t be seeing this. It is a negative stereotype of homosexuals. If all homosexuals were like this it would be totally understandable to be homophobic.
seriously, would someone even consider taking their kids to this? Really. I think no kids goes without saying.
The brillance of the film is when Cohen is at a MMA match (or whatever it is)and basically takes a parodic hypermaculine heterosexist space and turns it blantantly queer by making out with his lover. He normalizes gay love in a place where it is seen as most vile. This counters a repressive hegemony where the GLBTQ community lives in fear for displaying affection for each other, so kudos for Bruno!
I didnt think this movie was funny at all, but i did pop a boner half way through – I hope my girlfriend didnt notice
Just more faux lib agenda garbage for the stupid public to absorb. Garbage in, garbage out for the “all things are okay” America. No wonder the muslim extremists hate us.
There is nothing wrong with this movie, and you will see a lot worse in most of the Hollywood made mainstream movies you get now-a-days. The unfortunate thing about this movie is that it is so disjointed. It had so much promise in the first 10-15 minutes, and then just lost it after that, yes there were funny bit in it, and I the ending was extremely well done – loved the antics of the big guy they showed espec with him in tears at the end, but unfortunately this movie is only worth seeing on TV or as a weekly rental, not a big-screen outing. As for those who though it was over the top in regards to nudity etc, please see my top comment about it being no worse than most mainstream Hollywood made movies. And I concur with 2 Girls 1 Cup, Borat was likable, unfortunately Bruno isn’t as such. I think Bruno will go the way of Borat very quickly for Sacha, and he will have to bring a new identity out.
America needs to take its homophobic finger out of its own ass.
Bruno was fantastic.
I know comparision between borat and bruno comes as first thing in mind, but if they were some then there was no value in the film for SBC. They are two diff characters and their settings are diff too.. same way their outcome (satire or shock)..
we shouldnt expect SBC to give same things again and again.. Borat was a masterpeice and always will be.. nothing to beat that.. nobody should try..
Bruno is funny..the character.. if you seen his all flings on Da Ali G show you will laugh so hard.. It was not the same case in movie all the times but still its too much laugh.. and again joke is on people not on SBC.. I laughed so much on Paula talking about her humanitarian cause while sitting on human labors..
sounds like Jim is having homoerotic fantasies of Osama.
