Goodbye forever, 'Eli Stone,' but here's to burn-off programming

Categories: Television

Eli-stone_dl Last night, ABC aired the very last Eli Stone, and I'm one of a tuh-huh-huh-iiiiny number of people who gives a crapola. But I liked that show! I need more whimsy in my life, and whimsical lawyering is perhaps the very best kind of lawyering. The finale, while not my favorite episode of the often compelling series, provided some nice resolution for Eli and his dad, and I finally grew to like Jordan and Matt's smarmy relationship, just in time for the show to fully vanish. Alas, alas.

As it happens, Eli Stone isn't the only show that was canned months ago with left over episodes still turning up on the network's airwaves: Earlier this season, ABC burned off remaining episodes of Pushing Daisies, which was much sadder because that was a better canned show. Even as someone who consumes lots of TV online, watching the final episodes on the Internet just isn't the same for me. Plus there's, oh, a big fat nothing on TV a lot nights this summer, so padding my TiVo with the last episodes of gone-but-not-forgotten-series is a relief, a welcome oasis from the brutal desert of summer reality shows.

Ideally, our favorite shows would never be canceled, but until the unicorns overthrow the patriarchy, I'll settle for a burn-off schedule. Are you with me, PopWatchers? Do you want the finale episodes of your canceled-but-loved shows to air sometime, anytime, please oh please? Or do you prefer just waiting for the DVDs?

I actually am really liking the burn off summer shows. It is great getting all of Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money, and Harper’s Island. Maybe Dirty Sexy Money and Harper’s aren’t the best shows but it is nice to get some closure.

  • donner

Daisies was my fave of the cancelled shows…I didn’t watch the last few aired on Saturday, but will buy the DVD’s so I can start at the beginning of Season 2 and watch them…i happened to catch the last Eli Stone last night too, and thought it was great, even if George Michael wasn’t able to appear one last time…

I’m going to miss Eli and I’m going to recent handing over money for dvd knowing it will go to the studio that cancelled it but hand it over I will.

  • Abby

i totally cared that it is going off…i LOVED this show…i was so afraid eli and maggie wouldn’t get together but soooo glad that (although we really didn’t see it)they did…YAY..i have always loved those 2

I was happy to find closure for Eli Jones and Life on Mars. Those were some of my fav shows, last night as Eli talked to his dad/god I felt satisfied at the ending and that made my tv emotional/corny needs happy!

  • Randy

I loved that show. The sad part is, cancelling it probably made room for some new reality show. Please!!! Remember we watch TV for stories, not fake reality!!!!

  • juliana

I thought Eli Stone was great and I would have liked to see more episodes, and more George Michael with his wonderful british accent. I’m sick of fake reality shows.

  • pinkp

I am going to miss Eli Stone it was one of the best, unique, funny, sad, dramatic….shows on tv. I am so sick of all the stupid reality, cop, & blood guts shows that are the same.

ABC keeps canceling shows like Life on Mars, Eli Stone, and Pushing Daisies that I would keep on watching yet I have no interest in their upcoming shows. And they keep that awful show Private Practice which should have been canceled after a few episodes.

Be sure to watch the next few weeks as we finish off yet another creative show — “Dirty Sexy Money” has three or four more episodes. Saturday nights at 10. I am so going to miss these three shows — Daisies, Eli, and DSM. When will we finally reach the saturation point with reality junk and return to well-written drama?!

  • wombat

i totally agree with the guy who said it’s preposterous that abc cancels eli stone and pushing daisies and keeps the craptastic private practice on the air.
i’m absolutely glad that they showed all the episodes, i loved eli stone and i’m sorry it’s gone. and since this is the 10th or so time that abc has killed a show i loved (relativity anyone?) i think finally i will stop watching abc shows forever. i will take no more premature show cancellation heartbreak from them.

Two shows that I cared about a lot but was canceled: Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone. I have just been stocking up the episodes on my DVR, since it’ll be too sad for me to actually watch them burn it off week by week. RIP, you brilliant shows.

  • Ash

I am sick of the craptastic reality tv shows. Without my collection of movies and tv on DVD I would literally have nothing to watch this summer. Thank God for the CW replaying episodes of Season 4 Supernatural. I am going to miss Eli Stone. It was a cute drama. I am sort of glade that they canceled Life on Mars. I liked the original British version better.

  • Ladyli1

I loved “Eli Stone”, “Pushing Daisies” & “Dirty, Sexy, Money” but since they were cancelled I will alas forgo watching ABC and just wait for the DVD’s!

  • Glutton for punishment

I like to see the final episodes but it also makes me feel worse. Because you relive the fact that the show should not have been canceled in the first place because it was a great show.

  • ls

wombat, you watched “Relativity” too?? I thought I was the only fan of that long lost show…loved it and still miss it.

  • JoshD

I liked Eli Stone, but I put Pushing Daisies among the all time best. Life on Mars was really enjoyable, until the horrible ending. I’ll miss those shows and add them to the growing list(including this past year’s Life on NBC) that have been cancelled too quickly. Once Lost is done, I might stop watching network dramas all together and just wait for the DVDs.

  • Michael

I’ve stuck with “Kings”, and if the episodes aired before it was cancelled were as good as the episodes they’re burning off the show might have survived.

  • Monica K.

I stopped watching Eli Stone when they took it off regular air time during the season and since I knew they canceled it, I thought it was over. However, a few weeks ago I discovered it again on Saturday night (the graveyard shift!) and have just loved it. I am not watching any reality shows or new summer shows so finding a few more episodes was such a gift. I am sad it’s ending, will buy the DVD, and will look to cable for quality shows. Mainstream networks are on the same downhill slide as GM. How many of us bought reliable foreign cars cause GM produced lemons? Once you find another “reliable” source of entertainment would you really go back to network? I am heartsick that my favorite show has ended and will look elsewhere for entertainment.

  • Fritter

Loved the family/work/fantasy model of Eli Stone. After all, there is good in the world. I can not bear another stupid reality show. All I have to say is “BRING IT BACK!” or lose ratings.

  • Grandmere

I loved Eli Stone ad can’t wait for the dvd. Same thing with Dirty Sexy Money. ABC seems to prefer so called reality and game shows that I find unwatchable, so I am reading this summer. The only ABC show left for me is Brothers and Sisters.

  • Josie

Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies, just two shining examples of why good shows should find a home on cable instead of ABC. Cable networks are often more forgiving with ratings and usually have shorter, but more satisfying, seasons. Hopefully one day the big networks will realize their mistakes!

  • MaryUtah

I loved Eli Stone, it’s rare to have whimsy, faith, dancing, and some touching human moments all rolled into a good cast. I will miss it – guess reality tV is all the masses want these days – sad days indeed.

  • T.R.

VERY DISAPPOINTED…….Every show that has alittle intellect seems to get canceled. Love this show. Bring it back!!

  • T.R.

My 2 favorite shows from last season, Eli Stone & Dirty Sexy Money. What’s the story? Finally good programming and they cancel it?? HBO here I come!

  • Dani

I’ll truly miss Eli Stone. Didn’t know it was canceled until Saturday night!! I also miss Swingtown-someone needs to bring that show back!!

  • Himsay

You are right on about using the summer doldrums as a perfect oppotunity to burn off cancelled shows. Surely the burn off can garner ratings close to the NOTHING that’s presently scheduled. There oughtta be a law…

  • Popservations

Echoing comments made earlier, “Pushing Daises” was by far my favorite of the three ABC shows that were canned. I just started watching my saved-from-the-fall episodes of “Eli Stone” on TiVo, while being sure to keep my Season Pass going for the burned-off eps this summer. It really was a well-done show, and I remembered why I liked the first season. Here’s the thing: Last fall, I hardly watched ANYTHING besides coverage of the 2008 Presidential campaign. Seems the networks didn’t really take that into account. I got home, watched the news, watching “Countdown” and “Rachel Maddow” on MSNBC, and pretty much called it a night.
Looking forward to four weeks of “Dirty Sexy Money” on ABC, starting this Saturday night. Set your TiVos, people!

  • Ari

Awww I’m sad about Eli Stone too… I loved that show. I liked Pushing Daisies but lost interest towards the end, but I always loved Eli Stone. Will definitely buy the DVDs, for sure.

  • Scott

I really like Eli Stone and am sorry to see it go. The characters are/were very likable, though sometimes there were holes in the stories it was a fantasy type show. It gave me an hour of fun each week. I will miss it! Scott
