Malin Akerman: Is she A-List material?

Categories: Movie Trailers

Malin-Akerman_l This morning, I checked out the trailer for the new Vince Vaughn-Jon Favreau comedy Couples Retreat (watch it below). It’s got a cast full of familiar faces (including Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis, and Jason Bateman), but one stood out from the rest: Malin Akerman. Ever since her big break as the bride from hell in Ben Stiller’s The Heartbreak Kid (2007), the Swedish-born blonde has scored plum roles in big-name projects like 27 Dresses, Watchmen, and The Proposal. But so far, she’s always played second — or third, or fourth — fiddle to the movies’ stars. It got me thinking: Is Akerman building momentum or simply having her moment?

Frankly, I’m not a huge fan. Akerman definitely has more than a little Cameron Diaz in her on-screen DNA, but she doesn’t have the same easy charm that turned the Mask starlet into a household name. And if The Heartbreak Kid is any indication, she doesn’t quite have Diaz’s comedic chops either.

Still, it seems to me that Akerman has a decent shot at breaking onto the A-List eventually — but only if she builds a fanbase. And that’s where you come in, PopWatchers. Do you think Akerman deserves to graduate to starring roles? Is she a leading lady in the making? Or would you be happier to see her stick with supporting parts? Let us know in the comments!

    She rocked it in Watchmen.

I’m not a fan. At all. She wasn’t as grating in “The Proposal” as other things I’d seen her in, so perhaps she’s developing some subtlety?

Aww, how cute, EW doesn’t like the pretty blond girl. I’m sure if she said she loved Adam Lambert you’d have a different opinion.

There’s something about the delivery of her lines that has bugged me in ever movie I’ve seen her in. It’s halting and….I don’t know. And she just looks a little dazed all the time. I don’t think I’d see her in a leading role just yet, but maybe she can work on it.

  • Ryan

I like her. She was very good in Watchmen and The Comeback. When she’s given a decent part, she does great. I don’t find her nearly as irritating as Cameron Diaz.

  • GeeMoney

    Nah.

  • nikki

She totally gets on my nerves.

  • skeeve

yes, please, if she keeps showing her boobies

  • Nathan

She could be the hottest young actress in Hollywood, I’ll watch Malin Akerman in pretty much anything.

  • Ellen

    But she can’t act….

I’m not a huge malin fan, but this was the first time I’ve seen this trailer and I was laughing out loud. I’ll definitely be seeing this – but not b/c she’s in it.

  • Sarah

I love Kristen Bell, Jason Batemen, Kristin Davis and Vince Vaughn, but I always picture Malin Ackerman in those Bridezilla roles..maybe she’ll change my mind in this movie, but I’m not a fan.

  • Malcolm

She’s not a terrible actress, but she’s definitely below average. I think she’s risen about as far as she’ll go.

I would be happiest if she stuck to doing local car dealership commercials.
She is a blight on the face of all things cinematic with the talent of a brain-damaged baboon.
Granted, she is ‘pretty’. Maybe if she played a mute I’d watch.

Loved her in the Entourage 3some episode!

Loved her in the Entourage 3some episode!!!

Of course she’s A-List material — she was Juna in The Comeback! The best show of all time! Hooray for Comeback-related success!

  • Kaylie

I saw her in Watchmen. I will never watch anything she is in EVER AGAIN!!!

  • PeterBilt The Nature Boy

Ha ha good one PJ!!!! If she was gonna be in Twilight(Executive Produver Owen Gleiberman) EW would be all over her too

  • KM

Definitely not A-list. She’s not completely horrible, but she’s not good either. There are tons of other actresses out there who are just as pretty, if not more so, and are more talented. She doesn’t stand out.
There is something about her facial expressions in her rom-coms roles that really irritates me. Like in The Proposal, 27 Dresses, etc. She just has these expressions that try to say, “Oh, I’m just the sweet, cute, innocent girl. I’m such a good person.” That probably sounds weird, but she does that. Over-does it. To the point where that’s the only emotion on her face for the movie. Oh, how it bugs me.
Plus, she was horrible in Watchmen. Oh, she made me so mad in that. She ruined Silk Spectre II.

I’ve loved Akerman ever sincer she played Juna on the amazing–but cancelled–HBO show, “The Comeback.” Even though she may have only been there for eye candy, she was still really funny in her scenes with Lisa Kudrow.

  • knightryder

Malin is drop-dead gorgeous. She is just an average actress though, so I don’t think she can go much further unless she works on those dramatic chops.

  • drew101

I enjoyed her in HBO’s The Comeback with Lisa Kudrow. And had high hopes for her in Watchmen. But she’s just not that great of an actress. Maybe with a better director for actors she would shine, but I thought her work in Watchmen was pretty terrible and unconvincing.

  • Wood’s a poppin’

Are you kidding me? Didn’t you see her unbelievable a** in Watchmen? For a white girl, it doesn’t get any better than that…

  • Sam

I am not her biggest fan at all. Amy Adams was able to come back from a crazy sister/bride role in the Wedding Date and be totally charming, but I don’t think I will ever be able to warm up to Akerman in the same way.

  • Ryan

She was great in Watchmen. And she was the female lead. And in case you hadn’t noticed she received FIRST BILLING in Watchmen.
Give it time. She’s a good actress.

  • Ep Sato

So long as she keeps showing the world her boobies in every movie, it won’t be long before she’s well remembered.
Besides, she was the hottest thing in Watchmen!

  • wendyk

no – not a fan. not worthy.

  • GT

She looks like Diaz and talks like Drew Barrymore and can’t act. She is the actress you get when you can’t get afford either of those two.

  • GT

She looks like Diaz and her voice sounds like Drew Barrymore and she can’t act. She is the low-rent actress you get when you can’t afford either of those two.
