I’ve been doooooown this roooooaaad, etc., etc. Rejoice, ’90s fans, because Ally McBeal is finally coming to DVD. While Fox hasn’t announced a firm release date yet, both the first season and the complete series are available for pre-order on Amazon, in full-on Region 1 not-illegal form. Holla!
I was nuts about this show back in the day — it popularized the concept of “knee pit” (soft!), taught me that every decade or so, Americans will engage in a broad discussion about feminism (between Ally and Hillary, how often did it come up? Never?), and also there was kooky lawyering and dancing. Ah, we will miss you this season, David E. Kelley.

i’ve had the whole season for 4 years now. I bought it while i was visiting the UK one summer they have all seasons.
i can never stop watching this show pure magic
“tell him that you’re never gonna leave him tell him that you’re always gonna love him tell him tell him tell him right now”
LOVE IT!
Finally!
whole series not whole season sorry*
Must admit – I will buy the show – this was the show I hated to love/loved to hate (started watching when Tracey Ullman guest-starred) – the character Ally was irritating so much I wanted to smack her – but did love all the others – hated the dancing baby – LOVED Biscuit’s poor frog! — one reason hated it was they won too many cases which in real life would have been lost in court — thought the perfect final episode would have been an annoucement that all those cases that had been won had now been overruled in appeal and now the firm was going bankrupt!
It’s about time. Jeez.
That’s so weird, I live in the UK and they’ve already had the whole series available (on sale most of the time no less) for a really long time. I bought it at some point at the beginning of the year. So strange bearing in mind it’s an American show!
Anyone remeber Hayden Panettiere was on this show as Ally’s daughter or something like that? And remeber when Bon Jovi was on?
Finally!
I’m so excited!!! I loved the first three years of that show. With this and Thirtysomething on it’s way – maybe, maybe China Beach won’t be too far behind (yeah, I know, the music rights for all those 60’s songs will probably forever prevent that show from making it, but I can keep hoping).
This show and “The Wonder Years” have been on the very top of my TV on DVD wish list (though I realize the whole music rights thing is a HUGE hangup). This gives me hope that one day we might see The Wonder Years on DVD.
Now if we could only get ALL the episodes of “The Larry Sanders Show.”
Thanks for the update! Will definitely be buying the whole series. John Cage is the funniest character ever written!
I LOVE this show. So excited that it will finally be on DVD. Should have happened years ago.
The UK has the whole lot of them for years. The US are only just getting it now?
I, too, have been anxiously awaiting the release of “Ally McBeal” here in the States, since our friends across the pond have had access for many years now. Glad to hear the music rights have been cleared, sparing us the dreadful “WKRP”-ing of the episodes. One thing, though: Should I care that these are DVDs and not Blu-Ray?
I found a “Best of” dvd awhile back but it just wasn’t the same-left you wanting more! I’m so psyched! Now if only Cold Case is next to be released!
now if i could just get the Days and Nights of Molly Dodd.
Mumu, I couldn’t agree more! (And China Beach, while we’re at it.)
I was a young teenager when this show came out. I watched it for a couple of seasons, mostly cuz of the hoopla. After a couple of years I realized I hated it with a passion. Ally McBeal is a whiny self involved person who believes she cannot be happy or fulfilled w/o marriage and children despite her great career and friends. And all the female characters are horrible stereotypes, and every woman on the show got anorexia. The show is literal evil.
As others have said, I tried to watch this show because everyone seemed to be buzzing about it. But it just worked way too hard to be precious and cutesy and hip and relevant. Everything was over-contrived and the central character was a whinning bore.
I did try to watch it again in its later years when Robert Downey Jr was briefly on the show but even he couldn’t save it for me.
It’s about time! Great show. Great music.
I’ve been waiting for this for a long time! I just hope all the original music is intact. That’s usually what holds up TV-DVD releases like this in the first place.
VERY EXCITED!!!! I’ve missed that dancing baby and the giant waging tounge. Such a fun show!
I second China Beach!!! One of the best TV dramas ever!
agree with most — both loved & hated the show at the same time – Robert Downey Jr was WONDERFUL!!
Bring on The Biscuit!
H*LLS YES! FINALLY!!!
This was the best show back in the day. I wish It had ended better; however, the show was brilliant and I cannot wait!!!
Can we get confirmation as to whether or not the original music has been cleared? If not, then this set will not be worth the wait. I will just BitTorrent the European version of it as they have the original music.
Can someone please speak to Fox to confirm that the original music is actually going to be part of the DVD release. If it is not part of it I will just go ahead and BitTorrent the DVD sets from Europe as they have the music in their original form.
So all the music will be left intact? That’s a big thing to know ahead of time – I’d be a little less inclined to buy the show if I found that for cost reasons a lot of the original songs were removed…
