I used to be ambivalent toward The September Issue, R.J. Cutler's documentary chronicling scary robot Anna Wintour as she gnaws her way through the hearts and souls of the humans involved with Vogue's September 2008 issue. But the ample use of Ladytron's "Destroy Everything You Touch" in the film's theatrical trailer has changed all of that. What the hell? I suddenly do care about Anna Wintour. I want to hear more constructive criticism like "this type seems so large and pretentious, it looks like it's for blind people" fly out of her mouth. And frankly, I do need to know what we we are supposed to do with feathers this fall. Which I guess means last fall. Unless she was referring to Dancing With the Stars, I have no idea what was done with feathers last fall. I obviously need to see this movie.
The doc will show in limited release on September 11, more than two years after The Devil Wears Prada came out. Do you care, or would you rather take a cue from Wintour and tell PopWatch with a cold, unfeeling stare, "The other things you showed us are more exciting"? Oh, go ahead.

i have always loved vogue and find ms. wintour to be both brilliant and mysterious. i think apart of her appeal has always been that she produces this magazine monthly, but also remains a figure that we tend to only hear stories about second hand–apart from the editors note and scant interviews. I, for one, am totally excited to see the film and get a glimpse of how she works to create the most influential, and lets face it, best fashion magazine in America, if not the world!
As a fashion fan, of course I’d watch it. I feel like fashion is moving away from glossies, but it would still be a great movie. http://www.fashionmefabulous.com
Utterly and completely unimportant. If I want to be entertained, I’ll watch a real movie with a main character slightly less rigid.
I had no idea that this film even existed but it’s now on my “must see” list. I’ve always been intrigued by Anna Wintour and I try to follow fashion (as best I can with my non-Vogue budget) so this looks like a treat. Sort of…fluff for the fashion soul, hahaha.
To qoute le Karl it’s “not possible”
I feel like I’ve seen this movie already, and Meryl Streep did it better.
I’m pretty sure it’s September 2007 issue not 2008.
Go see it Annie. It’s a really wonderful film. Anna Wintour is fascinating on her own, but the film’s portrayal of her inner circle staff is gold. I don’t care about fashion one bit, and this film was engaging, entertaining and made me appreciate the industry in a new way.
ricardvs is right, it’s definitely the September 2007 issue. September 2008 had Keira Knightley on the cover.
I tried to see this movie at Sundance but alas, I couldn’t get in. I subscribe to Vogue (and got that issue and still have it…some bizarre compulsion makes me save all the big monster issues like the September issue–which takes weeks to read all the way through) so I am dying to see this!! Can’t wait. There’s something so absurd about Vogue–clearly they have no tolerance for poor fatties like me who can’t fit into or afford most designer clothes (in the last issue a pair of $350 shoes were dubbed “reasonable” price-wise!), but there’s still something so fascinating about it that sucks me in each month.
i’ve seen her several times and i just realized i’ve never heard her speak until now. she seems much nicer when you realize she has a soft voice. lol
Just more meaningless babble for shallow, mindless drones being told how to spend their money on what looks good for their bank account. What a pathetic part of humanity this represents! Let’s just design lead bathing suits for you all, so you can end up where you belong.
