'True Blood' recap: More complexity, less clothing (thank you)

Trueblood-shirtless-guy_lAfter the heaving sigh of relief that was last week's season premiere of True Blood (Lafayette lives! Thanks Alan Ball!), the second episode of the HBO drama's sophomore season brought a little more complication, a little less clothing, and a lot more guts 'n' blood than I ever really wanted to see. With Sookie and Bill helping Jessica acclimate to her new vampire life, Jason integrating himself into the Fellowship of the Sun, Tara continuing to delude herself into thinking the mysterious Maryann is helping her out of the goodness of her heart, and Lafayette begging for his life, the season's off to a much faster start than last year's slow-building mystery.

Last week, Sookie forgave Bill for turning Jessica into a vampire. This week, Sookie struggled with her feelings of guilt about the whole situation (Jessica's creation being a punishment for Bill defending Sookie's honor, after all), and tried to get Bill to treat the new vampire with a little more sensitivity. Sookie asked Bill, ''Parts of your former self are still in there, right? I wouldn't be with you if they weren't.'' Bill's response was brusque and blunt: ''When a vampire is as new as Jessica is, she has no humanity.'' Still, Sookie was suckered into taking Jessica to visit her family, which culminated in a fang-bearing standoff at Jessica's parents' house (more on that next week).

Meanwhile, the dim-but-lovable Jason happily settled into his born-again life, joining in bus ride sing-alongs and capture the flag games (wait, is this a church leadership seminar or summer camp?), and unknowingly striking up a rivalry with his bunkmate, the Lukeinator. I can't decide which part of Jason's storyline mesmerizes me the most: Ryan Kwanten's magnificent shirtless torso, or the Pantene commercial-volume and bounciness of the female Fellowship campers leaders' hair.

Maryann is still creepy, we still don't know where she came from, and we still don't know what the crap is up with her. We do know that she's back to screw with Sam for some reason, and that she uses sex to her advantage (seducing a young Sam in a flashback we saw last week, hypnotizing the customers at Merlotte's into all but boning each other on the dance floor). And poor Tara is still under the impression that Maryann is helping her out just for funsies.

I don't understand why Tara's been so implicitly trusting of Maryann from the get-go. Her character has always been so cynical about everything that it seems completely out of character for her to just accept Maryann's help. So when she told Sookie, ''Something inside me says 'This is weird Tara, don't trust it,''' I was glad we finally heard her voice of reason. Here's hoping she listens to her instincts.

As a final note, I hereby move to instate the Shirtless Law upon Mehcad Brooks, who plays Hot Dude Macking on Tara (his name is Eggs, but that is a silly name). This law has clearly already been enacted on the aforementioned Kwanten, who appears bare-chested as frequently as possible. Shirtless Law section 2A would mandate both Brooks and Kwanten to remain free of the constricting garments known as "shirts" for at least 75 percent of future True Blood episodes.

I would move to include the brilliant Nelsan Ellis in the Shirtless Law amendment, but his scenes were so incredibly gory and disturbing this week that I'd rather not envision Lafayette digging through the entrails of his less fortunate vampire prisoner (i.e. this week's vom-inducing moments) in my fantasies, thanks. Maybe next week.

Speaking of next week: OMG Lafayette as a vampire?!?!?! His impassioned plea for Eric to spare his life (sort of, because turning into a vampire would technically make him dead) was 100 percent true — Lafayette's powerful, convincing, and damn sexy, all characteristics Eric prides himself on. Lafayette's survival has already strayed far from the books, and turning him into a vampire would add a fascinating layer to the story.

What did you think of last night's True Blood? Ken Tucker thought the second episode was a solid addition to the strong foundation laid in last week's premiere, to which I say: hells yes. Also: sorry to focus on all the shirtlessness, but half of my notes are "Ryan Kwanten shirtless THANK YOU" and "PLEASE MAKE TARA'S BOYFRIEND SHIRTLESS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE K THANKS" so I'm just going with the moments that stood out for me. I'm sure you understand. And by "sorry" I mean YOU KNOW YOU LIKED IT TOO.

Absolutely love this show, haven’t read the books, but probably will now. Hate Sundays because the next day is Monday and work, but I am finding that I can’t wait till the next episode!! Can’t wait for Jason and the minister’s wife to bamchickawaawaa which we all know is going to happen, have missed seeing him bang everyone with a pulse. Oh and Tara’s boyfriend, oh my YUM! Yes he needs to stay shirtless through the whole season, I am sure we will see “more” of him in the very near furture.

    love anything vampires since Twilight!!
OME!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at the cool Twilight scrapbooking pages at http://scrapbookingtales.mybisi.com

  • Katie

I love the books and I’ve been loving every second of this season. Can’t wait until next week’s episode!

  • Cece

So, during Eggs’ whole gardening scene, I blanked out. I couldn’t concentrate because he is soooo flippin’ gorgeous. I watched the second showing at 11 and still didn’t quite get what was going on. I heard armed robbery, I think. What happened?
BTW, I second the motion for Shirtless Law 2A. Let’s make this happen!!!

  • BeaC

The show doesn’t follow very closely to the books, but I recommend reading them anyway. CH is a talented writer and I love how Mr. Ball takes her general ideas and spins them into such a hot weekly show.
I’m finding Maryann distracting though since I don’t recall her in any of the books. I want to know if she’s a witch coming in early to scout taking over Eric’s entrpises or if she’s fae. We haven’t seen her close to any vampires to know their reaction to her.
I love the books, but they get in the way of me understanding what the show is about sometimes. ha!
Keep writing CH, I’ll keep reading and watching the spinoff!!

I’ve read the books, and I don’t mind that it strays from them at all, as the story is pretty great. I just have one thought…MORE ERIC PLEASE!!!! I cannot get enough of him. he’s funny, sinister, and darn scary all at the same time. I would also like to see Alexander Skarsgard included in the shirtless rule. After seeing him in “Generation Kill” I’ve seen what’s under there, so I think he should forgo shirts altogether!

  • LA_DUDE

I was at Nordstrom’s at the Grove on Sunday night at 5 p.m., one hour before last night’s True Blood episode on HBO East. Who did I see shopping for shirts in the Men’s section: Mehcad Brooks. Absolutely beautiful in person. Incredible physique. I seriously agree with the Shirtless Law Agreement… and I’d throw in a Pantsless Amendment, to boot. What a man.

  • merges

Okay, the motion on the floor has been seconded, all in favor say Aye, against nay, the Aye’s have it, Shirtless Law 2A is passed!

  • new watcher

So I’m assuming the Sam/Tara story arc from last season is over now?

  • Tammy

Loving the new season, but more Eric please! He’s my favorite from the books AND the show. Also, I thought Mary Ann was supposed to be the maenad…

  • chuck

I really liked last nights episode. The show is clearly going in a darker direction as the creep factor is really esculating. Turning Lafeyette into a vampire is proof of that. There’s no doubt this is one of the most un-mainstream show on TV, yet its building quite a following. In some ways it reminds me of Twin Peaks in its weirdness.

  • Daxx

BeaC…Maryann is supposed to be the “maenad” from the books. She’s the one who goes after Sookie as a message to Eric. That ties into the whole orgy plotline.

  • Pammie

In the books, Eggs has that nickname because his real name is Benedict. Just sayin’.

  • Brandy

Love the books and the show. I am trying to separate the two because both are great. Please give me more Eric.

  • Adele

BeaC, I think Maryann is supposed to be the Maynad (Maenad?) from book 2 that attacks Sookie on the road, but that’s just a guess.

  • Megan

I think the Shirtless Law should be applied to more Sam scenes!

  • Megan

I think the Shirtless Law should be applied to more Sam scenes! I’m really liking Sam’s storyline this season, and I hope we get to learn more about Sam’s past.

  • EGGS

I have to say, I’ve read the books and Eggs is a nickname because his real name is Benedict. I LOVE this show, more each episode.

  • Megan

I think the Shirtless Law should be applied to more Sam scenes! I’m so glad Sam has a big storyline this season, and I hope we get to learn more about his past.

  • Leti

Let’s not forget that even in chains, Lafayette shirtless is not bad at all. I think Anna Paquin also received notice of the shirtless law…

  • Christine

I vote to add Alexander Skarsgard to the Shirtless Law list—yes Ryan Kwanten is yummmm but Eric just does it for me!

  • ashlee

Turning Lafayette into a vampire should prove very interesting. I love Eric’s new look. It shows off his face. I can’t wait to see what Bill does to Jessica’s family.

  • Melanie

Eggs mentioned that his name is really Benedict when he first met Tara on the show as well. It’s not just in the books.
Read the books if you haven’t already! I don’t think it will spoil the show. Even though the books and the show have the same “flavor,” a lot has been changed for the show.

  • katyk

Did anyone else think it was funny when Sookie told Jessica she had to change her clothes? She went from a long- sleeved buttoned up shirt to a spaghetti strapped tank top. Must come under the female rule on the show- must show neck and cleavage. Which I’m ok with. Waiting for someone to do the research on Egyptian goddesses and tie in to MaryAnn. If I have time later I will try

  • Chris

I have to admit that I’m a little late to the party. I don’t have HBO, and I’ve never read any of the books. I picked up season 1 on DVD Friday and watched the whole season by Saturday afternoon. LOVE THIS SHOW!!!
Will be subscribing to HBO today!

  • Daphalina

Yippee! I’m so glad we are getting recaps on “True Blood” now. I got hooked last season and this season looks even better! Love all the characters and can’t wait to see what they do with a Lafayette vampire! The menfolk are beyond gorgeous – thank you Alan Ball.
One note, could they get better make-up on Alexander Skarsgard? Dang, he always looks like they started with white greasepaint and abandoned it partway through. Bill always looks just right (slight tinge of white). But poor Eric always looks a little off. He’s a great looking guy, make him look like a great vampire too!

  • Jon

I loved this show from the first episode and season 2 has proven even better. I’m not exactly sure what they’re doing with Eric. What’s this “new me” thing? Did they clean him up to set up some sort of relationship with Lafayette?

  • Risa

More Bill and Sookie. More BILL!!!!

  • teonyc

Did anyone else find it out of character for Sookie to take Jessica to see her family, after Bill told her that she could not be trusted. On top of that Sookie keeping it from Bill didn’t ring true after she lectured him on lying to her last week.

  • Snarf

Eggs real name is Benedict (geddit?) as per the books.
Love the fact that the series is using the books as a template instead of an absolute (as good as they are)
