Exclusive: Joss Whedon on 'Dollhouse' -- 'Back with such a vengeance'

Categories: Buffy, Dollhouse, Television

Joss-whedon_l Joss Whedon is two weeks into breaking stories for Dollhouse's second season, and we're happy to report that he sounds like a happy man even without that season 1 budget. Whedon wrapped his top-secret horror film The Cabin in the Woods on May 29 and hit the Dollhouse writers' room on June 1. "I just wanted to die of tiredness," he tells EW.com exclusively. "About two hoursafter starting to talk to the writers about story, I was back with sucha vengeance, and so energized and so pumped because we reallyunderstand the show now. We understand what works, and what didn't workso well or what we weren't so thrilled about. We don't have the onusof trying to be a big hit sitting on our shoulders. We can just beourselves. And so the stories we're breaking are pure, and exciting, and everybody's on-board in the room, and it's never flowed better."

What does that mean for Season 2? "I'm really proud of thesecond half of season 1, and we're justexpanding on that in a huge way: Finding out the different things that Eliza [Dushku] can be, at the same time as extending our mythology," Whedon says. "Really, just every meeting is like, 'What's the most fun we can have withthis actor?' about the whole cast. All I can say — 'cause I'm gonna be Mr.Un-Spoiler — is that we're having a crazy amount of fun, and usually, thattends to translate onto the screen."

Speaking slightly spoilery, Whedon tells us that season 2 won't pick up right with "We've got to find Alpha!" but alittle bit later. Alan Tudyk has a role on ABC's midseason series V, but Whedon hopes he'll be able to use the character sparingly: "Alpha will always be a part of the equation." Whedon's also hoping to work out a similar loan with the producers of ABC's Happy Town, who nabbed Amy Acker, aka Dr. Saunders/Whiskey. For more insider scoops, keep reading after the jump.

More scoop: Whedon says that Echo's last word in the finale, "Caroline," was the beginning of her season 2 quest. "Echo wants to find not just Caroline, but what's going on behind everything. She doesn't have all of the skills. [Laughs] But she does have this weird super power of becoming a different person all the time, so she might start using that more specifically to find out who Caroline was and what happened to her and why this place exists." So she still has all those past imprints in her? "Well, they're supposed to have wiped them out of there. But we'll see how well that went…"

Other burning questions: Summer Glau hasn't signed on for any episodes of Dollhouse yet. "We're still breaking the episodes," Whedon says, "but we didn't honestly go into the season going, 'Now how can we figure out how to service Summer?' when we already have a huge ensemble. I adore Summer and she's phenomenal, but I have to service the cast I have first. If something comes up that's good enough, my God, I'd hound her. But the rumors of her becoming a big part of the show are greatly exaggerated."

And, sorry, but don't hold your breath that Whedon might become involved in the big-screen Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. "I believe [the producers] did ultimately reach out to my agent after the news broke," Whedon says. "I think that's something better left untouched by me. So, I wish them luck." (They'll need it: In a PopWatch poll, only three percent of readers planned on seeing the film if Whedon wasn't attached.)

Does hearing Whedon sound so pumped for Dollhouse's second season renew your faith in the series? That season 1 finale was good TV. Catch it here if you missed it.

I adore this man. Fitting Summer into the show would be amazing. I can’t wait for Cabin in the Woods.

  • J.

Yeah, totally can’t wait for the show to return. Can’t wait to see Wheddon let loose with his imagination–even with a restrictive budget, it’ll be awesome.

  • NS

    Bring back Reed Diamond!

  • shamon

Thanks for the info and i would only watch a whedon buffy movie instead of someone else, well here to Hollywood green lighting the spike movie. There always the comics book like angel and buffy to keep us happy .
I love dollhouse so thanks fox it makes up for what they did to firefly.

  • Kalendra Monroe

I’m all good with turning Joss loose for Season 2. Can’t wait. Re: a Kuzui-led Buffy movie, there’s more likelihood of me growing wings and flying to other planets than me going to see that horror-in-the-making.

  • CandyMaize

Always glad to read Joss Whedon interviews and can’t wait to see what they have in store for Season 2!!

  • Christie

I’m so excited about having Dollhouse back! I really hope they get Amy Acker on as a regular/recurring role to explore her character – she’s an awesome actress and her character seems just as interesting.

  • Adam

“Better left untouched”. Dude, you are Buffy!!!

I love Joss when he’s in the fresh bloom of creative fire. Whenever he sounds this enthusiastic and fired up, the results have been completely awesome. Not for nothing is he known as my Master.

  • Mike

We are behind you all the way Joss. Buffy is Joss. Joss is Buffy.

  • Tim

I thought that the last six Dollhouse eps were totally genius, and I’m looking forward to thirteen more!

  • Ron

a Buffy movie without Joss and the rest of the beloved characters/actors, is just something I wont be seeing

  • Caedan

I will support anything with Joss Whedon’s name on it for the simple fact that he created the amazing “Buffy”verse after that flop of a film with the same name. It’s almost painful to think of a Buffy world without those that made it great. By the way, thanks Fox for not ending another fun show on the verge of greatness after one season!

“Finding out the different things that Eliza [Dushku] can be”
Here is a hint: Very little!
Time to promote her to a job BEHIND the camera.

  • Delon

Dollhouse became my favorite new show of the last season. I’m super-psyched that it will be returning for a second season. The only thing though, if they had decided to continue with the show then why the hell not air the 13th episode of the 1st season?! Will it ever air?

  • Gusar

Can’t wait for this to start. But I really, really hope they can get Amy Acker on board for most of the season. Claire/Whiskey is too interesting to not have her around anymore.
As for Summer… imagining her any Amy on the screen at the same time… *head asplodes* … But Joss is right, Dollhouse has it’s own ensemble. If he finds something for Summer in there, woohoo! But if not, that’s fine too.
About the Buffy movie… The Kuzuis are either *trying* to piss of as many people as possible, or all this is some kind of weird experiment.

  • Lily

Please make Victor alright!! He was my favorite, and now Alpha may have ruined his pretty face forever!!

  • Snarf

Dollhouse was my favorite new show of the 08/09 season as well. Hope S2 is like the S2 of Buffy and Angel. (Show find’s it’s “legs” and really takes off)

  • Jess

Has no one figured it out yet? Joss is a god amung men. No wonder less then 3% are going to see the new buffy movie and i’m sure those three percent are the morbid ones that drive real slow past an accident. Because thats all this is. One tragic accident

  • Not That Babs The Other Babs

Um, Caedan? Joss wrote that “flop of a film”, so you’ve praised and insulted him all at once. And no, shamon, it does NOT make up for “Firefly”. Nothing can make up for cancelling “Firefly” (other than bringing it back, which won’t happen since other networks are apparently smarter about the whole Nathan Fillion awesomeness thing). But I am glad to see Fox give “Dollhouse” more time. I’d love to see Summer join the cast, but I’m totally with Joss on how best to involve (or not involve) her.

  • TellyB

While DOLLHOUSE isn’t as mind-numbingly bad as Firefly, it’s still a mediocre piece of fluff and the “actress” who plays the main role is amazingly bad.
I hope Cabin isn’t as bad as Serenity. That flopped for a reason…

  • K

This show was saved for financial reasons only – not for ratings or for creative decisions. The ratings were abysmal and if all things being equal, it should have been cancelled and T:SCC (which had better ratings)should have been renewed. But since Fox owns Dollhouse and WB owns T:SCC, Fox went with the sinking ship.

  • TVAddict

    My faith didn’t need renewed.

  • Thatcher

Hey, Other Babs, I think Joss’s script for the original Buffy movie was significantly altered by the film’s producers, so although he’s credited as the writer, the movie is likely less Joss’s work and more that of the producers.

  • To ‘Other Babs’

Whedon had no control over the first Buffy film. His screenplay was totally destroyed and the director wanted to make it a comedy.

  • Ron

I love Whedon – loved both Buffy and Angel – but Dollhouse is just abysmal. I gave it a fair shake out of loyalty but it just sucks. It doesn’t help that the lead actress can’t act her way out a paper bag either.

  • Lindsey

Oh man, TellyB… comments like that about Firefly are liable to get you launched into space (anyone know where Reaver territory is?). While everyone is entitled to their opinion (natch), Firefly was actually quite well done, in set, writing, design and acting. Not run-of-the-mill, a bit more high-brow perhaps. Perhaps mandatory toilet/sexual/disrespectful humor inclusion is what is required for some to enjoy a show. *shrug*

  • strickens_girl

I am very excited about more Dollhouse. Now that Joss gets to do what he wants, it’ll be so much better. And please have more Alpha. Alan Tudyk is amazing.

  • sean

Yeah, Dollhouse started off slow & mediocore, but by epp 5 it only improved. Can’t wait till sea 2, & like Buffy it’s not just the main char. but the whole ensemble cast & writing that elevates a show.
Also, Serenity the movie was awesome.
    A buffy movie w/o Joss, & the orig. cast=abysmal.
Love Summer & hope she comes back to the show.

  • Rick

I would like to believe that most people who didn’t like ‘Firefly’ were people who hated being pulled out of their comfort zone, being accustomed to watching the same old stuff and now being exposed to a mixture of genres. I appreciated the concept and it was one of the shows that drew me back to watching television.
